Boy, 7, drowns after being chased by wild cattle

KOTA BHARU: A seven-year-old boy was found drowned, believed to have been chased by a herd of wild cattle before falling into Sungai Kaabah in Kampung Kelaweh, Machang, yesterday afternoon. Machang Fire and Rescue Station operations commander, Senior Fire Officer II Muhamad Osman, said in a statement that a call about the incident was received at 4.22pm. 'The team searched the area mentioned. The victim was found at 5.07pm, about 0.5 metres from the reported location, and was pronounced dead by Ministry of Health personnel,' he said, adding that the body had been handed over to the police. He said the victim was reportedly playing with three friends before being chased by the cattle and falling into the river, located about 500 metres from his home. I shouldn't have cited use of Sedition Act against Akmal, says Ramkarpal

PETALING JAYA: Former deputy law minister Ramkarpal Singh has regretted asking for Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to be investigated for sedition over his remarks on the upside down flag issue in Penang. Ramkarpal, the Bukit Gelugor MP, said he remains against the use of the Sedition Act 1948 and wanted it to be repealed. In a statement today, he said he has 'always been, and still am, of the view that the Sedition Act ought to be repealed due to its draconian nature in line with the government's commitment to reform'. Ramkarpal had on Wednesday called for Akmal to be probed under the Sedition Act, saying the Umno Youth chief had issued several 'extreme and unacceptable' statements that were divisive, contained racial undertones, and had the potential to threaten public order. He also asked for Akmal to be investigated under the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and statements conducing to public mischief. Ramkarpal said since there had been many police reports on the case, such investigations should begin right away, in the public interest. 'I am of the view that there are sufficient grounds to commence such investigations,' he said. Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook ordered his party's youth wings to lodge police reports against Akmal over a rally held outside a hardware store in Kepala Batas yesterday. MACC widens probe into online media company after two journalists with military background arrested in smuggling ring
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will investigate an online media company following the arrest of two of its staff members during Op Sohor, who are believed to be involved in a smuggling syndicate. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the owner of the company would be summoned soon to provide a statement. 'We have reason to believe the media company is being used as a front to enable and facilitate money laundering activities,' he told Bernama today. Azam added that investigations are ongoing to determine the company's involvement in the smuggling operation. He also revealed that the two journalists arrested, along with eight other individuals—including senior military officers, are believed to have previously served in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). 'They are former MAF personnel, and initial investigations suggest they may have provided information to the smugglers,' Azam said. On Wednesday (Aug 13), the media reported that MACC had remanded 10 individuals, including five senior MAF officers and two journalists from a news portal, suspected of involvement in a smuggling syndicate in the southern part of the country. Also remanded were a company manager, an administrative assistant from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), and a foreign woman. The suspects, aged between 30 and 55, were arrested in the Klang Valley during Op Sohor, conducted by MACC's Intelligence Division in collaboration with the police (PDRM). — Bernama
