NCDEX, IMD ink pact to launch India's first weather derivatives

Time of India8 hours ago
The
National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Ltd
(
NCDEX
) on Thursday said it has inked an agreement with the
India Meteorological Department
(
IMD
) that will lay critical groundwork for launching India's first
weather derivatives
.
This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on June 26, lays the critical groundwork for the launch of India's first weather derivatives -- a long-anticipated market instrument designed to help farmers and allied sectors hedge against
climate-related risks
such as erratic rainfall, heatwaves, and unseasonal weather events, NCDEX said in a statement.
With this partnership, NCDEX will develop a rainfall-based derivative product, among others, using historical and real-time datasets sourced from IMD.

"While our endeavour is to launch it early so that stakeholders benefit. We will need time for developing a product considering southwest and eastern monsoon cycles and then test our hypothesis before we submit it for regulatory approval and it is difficult to give any concrete timeframe at this juncture," NCDEX Managing Director and CEO Arun Raste told PTI.
The weather product to be developed under this collaboration will enable seasonal and location-specific derivative contracts and will advance expertise on weather-related risks across
agriculture
, transportation, and allied industries.
Live Events
"This partnership with IMD opens the door to a new era in commodity markets. Weather derivatives have long been a foundational need towards building a
climate-resilient rural economy
. With climate volatility increasingly affecting productivity and income of farmers, these instruments provide a market-based solution to weather risk," Raste said.
The collaboration will support capacity-building, joint research, and training programmes for stakeholders, including FPOs, agri-traders, policy think tanks, and analysts.
"IMD has always played a vital role in supporting agriculture and disaster resilience. Through this collaboration with NCDEX, we are now extending our scientific capabilities into the financial domain, allowing weather data to become a powerful instrument of economic stability and market innovation," IMD Director General of Meteorology Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

Gadkari launches road projects worth 4.6k crore in state

1 2 3 Ranchi/Garhwa: Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari laid foundation stones of three road projects worth Rs 1,700 crore and inaugurated seven road projects worth Rs 4,650 crore in the state on Thursday at two separate programmes held in Ranchi and Garhwa. Stating that the Centre is already working on projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore in Jharkhand, Gadkari said plans are afoot for additional projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore in the state. In Garhwa, Gadkari laid the foundation stone for Rs 1,330 crore four-lane project measuring 32 km from Chattisgarh-Jharkhand border to Gumla on NH-43. That apart, he inaugurated the Rs 1,130 crore four-lane Garhwa bypass road measuring 22.73 km on NH-75 under the Ranchi-Varanasi economic corridor. With the construction of the by-pass road from to Khajuri village (Garhwa district), the residents heaved a sigh of relief. The by-pass from Shankha village (Palamu district) to Khajuri village (Garhwa district) links about two dozen villages in Palamu and Garhwa. He also sanctioned Garhwa-Ambikapur four-lane road and few other projects worth around Rs 2,460 crore in Garhwa district. In Ranchi, too, he gave his approval to outer ring road project and widening of Ranchi-Muri Road. "More projects worth Rs 75,000 crore are in the offing, under various stages," he said. Setting timelines for a few ongoing projects, he said that the Rs 36,000-crore Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata corridor will be over by March 2028. A six lane between Delhi-Kolkata estimated around Rs 31,700-crore will be completed by June 2026 and Ranchi-Patna four-lane economic corridor worth Rs 8,900 crore is eyeing December 2029 deadline. State finance minister Radhakrishana Kishore, who was present in Garhwa, cited how Garhwa and Palamu have stopped receiving security related expenditure (SRE) scheme owing to Naxal menace but has now stopped getting it. "Centre says that Naxal menace is now over in Garhwa and Palamu but I personally believe that it is contained only because of 196 police pickets. Remove those pickets, and you will realise how troublesome law and order is here again. Hence, we must continue to get those funds to address the challenges in this region," he said, adding that these regions are rain shadow area and needs special assistance to stop migration and further development projects. Gadkari advised the minister to get an official order passed from the govt and he will help in building over 1,000 ponds through NHAI free of cost like he did in Vidharbha (Maharashtra) to tide over water crisis in farm dominated areas.

Stock in major Maha dams breaches halfway-mark as early as July first week, highest for the period in at least a decade

Pune: Major reservoirs in Maharashtra surpassed the halfway storage mark on Thursday, their highest July first week level in at least a decade, following 500mm-1,000mm rainfall in major dam catchments since the monsoon onset in the state in May. According to a senior official from the water resources department, the collective water storage in Maharashtra's major dams reached 51% of their total capacity on Thursday, highest July first week stock in at least a decade. The stock stood at just 20% on the same day last year. "Several key reservoirs in western Maharashtra have reached or are nearing the halfway mark in terms of water storage. These include prominent dams like Ujani, Varasgaon, Panshet and Bhatghar in Pune district; Koyna and Radhanagari in Kolhapur; Gangapur and Bhandardara in Nashik; and Veer and Dhom in Satara district. Besides, major dams in the Marathwada region, including Jayakwadi, Manjara, Sina Koregaon and Lower Terna, have also reached near half capacity," the official said, citing data available with the department. Water has been released into various rivers from Khadakwasla, Veer, Chaskaman and Ujani dams over the last few days as a precautionary measure," the official said. Officials from the department said teams were deployed at all the dam sites round-the-clock to monitor water levels and manage discharges. According to the department, there are 138 major dams spread across six divisions across the state. Dams from the Konkan region were at the top with collective live storage of 61% on Thursday against last year's stock of 28%, followed by the dams in the Pune division, which had 58% stock as compared to last year's reserve of 15%. The collective storage in the dams in the Nashik division was at 52% as against 17% in 2024. "Nagpur is the only division in the state where major dams collectively had lesser live water stock on Thursday (35%) when compared to last year's stock of 36.4%, primarily due to less rainfall in the Vidarbha region during the period," another official from the department said. Officials from the Khadakwasla irrigation circle said water discharge from Khadakwasla dam was increased to the rate of 8,400 cusecs into the Mutha river on Thursday following a rise in rainfall activity in the catchments. The irrigation department has issued alert to PMC to increase vigilance along the river.
