Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. deported after accusations of cartel ties

Washington Post3 hours ago
Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was deported to his native Mexico, the president of that country said Tuesday, from the United States amid accusations he has ties to organized crime.
Chávez, 39, was arrested by American authorities in July, shortly after he lost a high-profile bout to Jake Paul in Anaheim, California. The Department of Homeland Security said at the time that Chávez had overstayed a visa and noted he had an active arrest warrant in Mexico.

Anaheim police release photos of car involved in deadly hit-and-run crash

Anaheim police have released images of a car they believe was involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash in early August as they continue searching for the suspect. It happened a little before midnight on Aug. 9 near Knott Avenue and Orange Avenue, according to a news release from the Anaheim Police Department. "When emergency personnel arrived, they located a pedestrian in the roadway with severe traumatic injury," the release said. "The pedestrian was immediately transported to a hospital in critical condition." They died three days later, after succumbing to the injuries sustained in the crash, police said. The victim has not yet been identified, but police say that they were a 58-year-old male resident of Stanton. Investigators believe the man was walking across Knott Avenue, just north of Orange Avenue, when he was struck. Instead of stopping to help, the driver fled from the area. They've released photos of the car, a red or maroon sedan, that were captured from surveillance camera footage in the area. Anyone who knows more is urged to contact investigators at (714) 765-1474.

Hit-and-run driver arrested after deadly wrong-way crash in San Bernardino County

A hit-and-run suspect was arrested after a wrong-way crash left a person dead in San Bernardino County. The suspect was identified as Teri Leanne Jones, 43, of Adelanto, according to the California Highway Patrol. On Aug. 3, CHP officers responded to a crash on El Mirage Road, just west of El Mirage Airport Road in Adelanto, around 8:30 a.m. An investigation revealed the suspect was driving the wrong way on the dirt shoulder when she decided to make an 'unsafe turn' in front of an oncoming Honda Civic. The Honda driver tried to quickly turn away to avoid the crash, but the maneuver caused his vehicle to flip over and off the roadway. Investigators said the suspect, who was driving a Subaru Forester, fled the scene after noticing the victim's significant injuries. The victim was airlifted to the hospital where he later died. His identity was not released. CHP investigators found the Subaru Forester and identified Jones as the suspect involved. On Aug. 6, she was arrested for felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges. 'The CHP takes hit-and-run crashes and unsafe driving seriously and will diligently work to investigate these incidents,' said CHP Victorville Area Commander Captain Todd Kovaletz. No further details were released as the incident remains under investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Inmate died hours after being booked into Bernalillo County jail

Aug. 19—A male inmate died a day after being booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center over the weekend, officials said Tuesday. "Despite rigorous life-saving efforts, an inmate died Sunday at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center," MDC spokeswoman Candace Hopkins said in a news release. MDC will not release the 62-year-old man's name until his family has been notified, she said. The man was booked into the jail around 7 a.m. Saturday. The next day, around 9 p.m., the man "experienced a medical emergency, prompting a code to be called," Hopkins said. MDC staff and University of New Mexico Hospital staff stabilized the man before taking him to a medical unit in the detention center. Roughly 22 minutes later, the man had another medical emergency. An ambulance arrived around 10:08 p.m. to assist in life-saving measures, Hopkins said. At 10:26 p.m., UNMH staff pronounced the man dead. The man is the sixth MDC inmate to die at the facility or die after falling ill at the facility this year.
