Labuan woman loses over RM33,000 in Instagram investment scam

LABUAN: A local woman has become the latest victim of an online investment scam in this duty-free island, losing a total of RM33,508.25 after being duped through a fraudulent scheme promoted on the social media platform Instagram. Labuan police chief Supt Mohd Hamizi Halim said the 30-year-old woman was lured into the scam after coming across an advertisement on Instagram that promised lucrative returns through investment opportunities. 'Enticed by the offer, she contacted the account operator through WhatsApp, and was convinced to make multiple transactions into several bank accounts between January and April,' he told Bernama today. He said the victim only realised she had been scammed after failing to receive any returns or updates regarding her supposed investment. 'Repeated attempts to contact the individual behind the Instagram account went unanswered, prompting her to lodge a police report on April 23 at 7.05 pm,' he said. Mohd Hamzi said the victim initially made an investment of RM300 and received a return of 10 per cent, and later on, she made additional transfers from various accounts amounting to RM33,508.25 in phases, believing she was participating in a legitimate investment. 'On April 11, she attempted to transfer the profit from the amount of her investment but failed, as the investment runner told her there was a system error, and the woman started to feel she had been deceived,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a punishment of imprisonment for up to 10 years, whipping, and a fine if convicted. Domestic violence cases Malaysia 2025 statistics and state breakdown
IPOH: A total of 3,768 domestic violence cases involving victims aged between 36 and 45 were recorded nationwide from January to June this year. Women, Family, and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad revealed that 73 per cent (2,751 cases) of the victims were women. She added that 27 per cent (1,017 cases) were men. The highest number of cases was reported in Selangor with 687. Perak followed with 653 cases. Johor recorded 440 cases. Kedah had 379 cases. Sabah reported 289 cases. Sarawak documented 277 cases. Kelantan registered 234 cases. Penang saw 157 cases. Terengganu reported 146 cases. Negeri Sembilan recorded 141 cases. Noraini said advocacy efforts like today's campaign are encouraging more victims to come forward and report incidents to the police. She stated that greater awareness has led to more victims stepping up to seek help. 'I urge all victims not to remain silent until the violence escalates to a point of regret or tragedy,' she said after launching the Advocacy Programme for Women's Wellbeing on Domestic Violence here today. In her speech, Noraini highlighted that Perak recorded 842 domestic violence cases last year. This made it one of the top five states for such incidents. For 2025, 425 cases have been reported by April. This represents a sharp increase from 175 cases in the same period last year. She reassured the public that KPWKM is committed to enhancing policies, laws, and support systems for victims of domestic violence. 'Our priority is to raise awareness, empower women to speak out, and create safe spaces for support and recovery,' Noraini said. She added that the advocacy programme also known as Aku Wanita@KRT, serves as a strategic platform to engage communities. The programme provides transparent, impactful solutions to tackle domestic violence. 'KPWKM's commitment is clear - to prevent, protect, and rehabilitate,' she added. KOTA BHARU - Six Form Four students in Pasir Mas have been remanded for six days starting today to assist in the investigation of a bullying case involving another student. Pasir Mas Police Chief ACP Kama Azural Mohamed said the remand until Aug 25 was granted by the Pasir Mas Magistrate's Court. This comes after the all-male suspects, aged 16, were arrested yesterday. He said the incident occurred at 12.45 pm last Monday. The complainant alleged he was punched, elbowed on the head and kicked on the buttocks by the suspects. "One of the suspects also pulled down the complainant's sports pants to knee level," he said in a statement today. He said as a result of the incident, the victim experienced head pain and trauma related to returning to school, as the same suspects frequently harassed him. "The victim informed his parents about the matter before lodging a report at the Pasir Mas Police Station. Preliminary investigations found that all the suspects admitted to bullying the victim", he said.
