Premier League: Ashley Young, Asmir Begovic Set For Everton Exits

Veteran Young, goalie Begovic and Joao Virginia will leave Everton when their contracts expire at the end of the season.
Everton have confirmed that Ashley Young and goalkeepers Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia will be leaving the Club when their contracts expire at the end of the season next month.
Manager David Moyes said, 'Since my return to the club, I've seen what a great professional Ash is and know the leadership qualities he has brought to the squad during his time at Everton. His versatility, experience, and know-how have also been really beneficial to the team and me.
'Asmir and Joao have also worked really hard and conducted themselves impeccably. On behalf of everyone at the Club, I want to thank all three players for their service, and we wish them all the very best for the future," he said.
Young joined the Blues in July 2023, with his experience, leadership, and versatility proving invaluable over the past two seasons.
Ahead of Sunday's last-ever Premier League match at Goodison Park, Young has made 68 appearances for Everton across several positions, scoring goals against Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Begovic returned to Everton last summer, having previously spent two years with the Blues between 2021-2023, and has made 10 appearances for the Club across those two spells.
Virginia signed for Everton from Arsenal in August 2018, and the 25-year-old has since made a total of eight appearances for the Men's Senior Team.
Both goalkeepers have provided important competition and support for Jordan Pickford during their time with the Blues.
'This is a complicated situation in many respects, with so many players out of contract this summer. It's important to me to speak with all of those players, individually, to give them clarity on their situations," Moyes added.
'Lots of factors influence our decision-making, and we're currently working through that process with the players, which takes time. Some will have clarity by the end of this week, and for others, it may get to next week, but it's important that it's handled in the right way.
'We also have five players on loan, and we will let them know their situations in due course," he added.

Auckland stuns Boca, Chelsea progresses at Club World Cup
New York, June 25 (UNI) Benfica secured top spot in Group C at the FIFA Club World Cup with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich, as Chelsea advanced from Group D and Auckland City stunned Boca Juniors with a 1-1 draw. Flamengo, already assured of a place in the last 16, drew 1-1 with Los Angeles FC in Orlando. In Charlotte, an early goal from Norway international forward Andreas Schjelderup inflicted Bayern's first blemish of the tournament. Schjelderup timed his run to perfection to sweep home a first-time effort from 12 yards after compatriot Fredrik Aursnes crossed from the right wing. Bayern enjoyed almost three quarters of the total possession but rarely threatened against a disciplined and compact Benfica defense. The result left the Lisbon-based club a point ahead of the Bundesliga champions, who also advanced to the tournament's next stage. "I think this was a very fair and important win, historic really," Benfica manager Bruno Lage said. "We were as straightforward and assertive as we should be and I think we were very effective in delivering our strategy." Leeds signs Slovenia defender Jaka Bijol for return to Premier League
Newly promoted Premier League club Leeds added Slovenia standout Jaka Bijol to its defence ahead of the second-tier champion's return to the top level. Leeds said the 26-year-old centre-back signed a five-year deal. The transfer fee paid to Udinese was reportedly around 15 million pounds ($20 million). Bijol has played 63 times for Slovenia, including all four games at the 2024 European Championship. He helped shut out the England attack led by Harry Kane and Portugal's attack led by Cristiano Ronaldo in 0-0 draws. Slovenia was eliminated by Portugal in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout. Slovenia starts a 2026 World Cup qualifying group in September in a competitive group with Switzerland, Sweden and Kosovo.
