Iran's Foreign Minister Arrives in Rome for Fifth Round of Indirect Talks with US
Araghchi has previously engaged in four such rounds—three in Muscat and one in Rome—conducted indirectly through Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi.
Accompanied by a high-level delegation of legal, political, banking, and financial experts, Araghchi departed Tehran early Friday. His delegation includes Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Deputy for Political Affairs; Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy for Legal and International Affairs; Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei; along with senior diplomats and advisers.
The Rome talks are scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM local time.
US officials—including President Trump, Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and spokespeople for both the White House and State Department—have recently insisted that any agreement with Iran must include a complete halt to uranium enrichment.
Tehran has strongly rejected this position, which it considers a red line.
Iran's central demand remains the effective and verifiable lifting of the illegal and unilateral US sanctions. Tehran maintains that uranium enrichment is its inalienable right under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and insists on maintaining the full nuclear fuel cycle.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei criticized Washington's latest moves, saying, 'These sanctions—especially at this critical moment—further question the seriousness of the United States in pursuing a diplomatic path.'

He added that Rubio's recent expansion of sanctions to cover Iran's construction sector reflects 'a new peak in hostile and unlawful US actions against the Iranian people.'
Just hours after the Iranian Parliament declared that uranium enrichment levels 'cannot be capped below 20%' and must align with the country's peaceful needs, Hasan Qashqavi, head of Parliament's subcommittee on nuclear affairs, reaffirmed that uranium enrichment is a 'sacred achievement bought with the blood of nuclear martyrs.'
Qashqavi reiterated in an interview with IRNA that Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons but demands full and unconditional sanctions relief.
In a separate development, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman Ali Mohammad Naeini stated that Iran has achieved 'effective deterrence' and now possesses 'potent offensive capabilities.' He warned that any attack on Iran would be met with a 'resolute and forceful' response, asserting that the country's military strength continues to grow daily.

Reacting to reports of possible Israeli occupation's action against Iran's nuclear facilities, Araghchi issued a stern warning to 'Tel Aviv.' He called on the United Nations and the Security Council to take 'immediate and effective action' against Israeli threats and repeated violations of the UN Charter.
He also urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to maintain neutrality and condemn Israel's threats, emphasizing that Iran's nuclear program remains peaceful and under IAEA supervision.
In a letter to the UN, Araghchi declared that Tehran would 'firmly respond to any threat or illegal act' and would take 'all necessary measures' to protect its citizens, interests, and facilities from any form of aggression or sabotage, in accordance with international law.

He accused the MEK of using underground propaganda networks to recruit individuals to form "sabotage cells" aimed at disrupting public order. Security forces dismantled the cell and arrested all its members, he added. Hassanpour said the suspects were undergoing "specialized interrogation" and the investigation was ongoing. Their arrest comes after the execution late last month of two alleged long-term members of the group. They had been found guilty of producing improvised mortars to attack civilians, homes and public institutions. Founded in the 1960s to oppose the Western-backed shah, the MEK was outlawed after the Islamic revolution of 1979 for fighting alongside Saddam Hussein's troops in the Iran-Iraq war. Disarmed by a US-led coalition following its invasion of Iraq in 2003, the group now advocates a change in Iran's system from abroad. In recent weeks, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused the group of seeking to foment "unrest" with the aim of toppling the system during Israel's June 13 attack, which triggered a 12-day war with Iran.

Israeli army spokesperson denounces 'Hezbollah's central role' in the Aug. 4 explosion
On the fifth anniversary of the deadly explosion at Beirut Port, on Aug. 4, 2020, Avichay Adraee, the Arabic-language spokesperson for the Israeli army, published a message on X Monday in which he vehemently denounced Hezbollah's supposed role. "Five years ago, we were the first to reach out to the Lebanese people, offering sincere humanitarian assistance ... without distinction of religion, denomination or political affiliation," he wrote. "We simply saw a people in distress, and we responded to humanity's call." On the evening of the tragedy, Israel offered humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, with which it is technically at war. "Israel turned to Lebanon through international security and political contacts to offer humanitarian and medical aid to the Lebanese government," Israeli foreign and defense ministries announced at the time. For Adraee, "even at that time, it was perfectly clear who ... insisted on dragging Lebanon into hell." "Hezbollah is the cause of Lebanon's calamity," he stated, accusing the party of having "played a central role in causing the port disaster by storing explosive materials in the heart of the capital." He added that Hezbollah "mocked the helping hand extended to Lebanon, and preferred to throw itself into the arms of the Iranian regime, as usual, even at the expense of its people." Beirut airport and port are considered to have served as transit points for the party's weapons and funds for many years, and it has also largely lost its land supply routes from Syria, following the fall of its ally, the deposed President Bashar al-Assad, last December. He wrote: "On instructions from the Defense and Foreign Affairs ministers, Israel reached out to Lebanon through security, political and international channels, and proposed humanitarian and medical aid. Israel has great expertise in these areas, as evidenced by the many humanitarian missions it has conducted around the world in recent years. It is time to put aside all conflicts." On Aug. 4, 2020, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history devastated entire neighborhoods of the Lebanese capital, leaving 235 dead and 6,500 injured. This disaster, which has become a symbol of a culture of impunity, was triggered by a fire in a warehouse where tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer were stored without precautions, despite repeated warnings to the highest officials. President Joseph Aoun said Monday that the Lebanese state was "committed to uncovering the whole truth, no matter the obstacles or the high positions involved."

New pro-Trump billboard near Beirut
A new billboard featuring U.S. President Donald Trump appeared Sunday in Sin al-Fil, Beirut. Witnesses said the banner was installed on the roof of a building near the Jisr al-Wati bridge. 'We know that you love Lebanon' is written in large letters next to a smiling portrait of Trump, along with a quote from famed Lebanese writer Gibran Khalil Gibran: 'The truly great man is he who would master no one, and be mastered by none.' The phrase comes from Gibran's 1926 poetry collection Sand and Foam. Social media backlash and propaganda The billboard drew swift backlash on social media, with some users comparing it to pro-Iranian axis and Hezbollah propaganda. 'But where is Lebanese sovereignty??? Staggering. How is such a thing possible?' one user wrote. Another commented: 'Here's how you have to deal with Trump: you steer him in the desired direction using flattery.' The origin of the billboard remains unclear. Unlike other political advertisements in Lebanon, it carries no signature or dedication. This campaign is similar to the 'Mabrouk [congratulations] to Dr. Massad Boulos' posters that appeared across Lebanon in January, after Boulos — the father of Trump's Lebanese son-in-law — was appointed adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern affairs. That campaign was reportedly backed by Tony Fayad, a businessman from northern Lebanon. At the same time, other posters featuring Lebanese President Joseph Aoun with the slogan 'Make Lebanon Great Again' — echoing Trump's 2016 campaign — were displayed around Beirut for months. Since Trump took office in January, his special envoys — first Morgan Ortagus, then Tom Barrack — have made repeated visits to Lebanon, delivering U.S. demands to local authorities. These have included calls for Hezbollah's disarmament and urgent economic reforms, particularly banking sector restructuring. In a May speech at the Saudi-American Economic Forum in Riyadh, Trump said he was 'ready to help Lebanon,' praising its new leadership and advocating for a 'more productive partnership with the United States.' 'My administration is ready to help Lebanon create a future of economic development and peace with its neighbors. There are wonderful people in Lebanon — doctors, lawyers, great professionals. I hear it all the time,' Trump said.
