Commanders' Jayden Daniels gets brutally honest on preseason, Terry McLaurin
Jayden Daniels will not openly admit it, but the frustration of the offseason seems to be catching up with him. Two days after the Washington Commanders' preseason opener, the second-year quarterback spoke honestly on how the process has been without disgruntled star Terry McLaurin.
Daniels did not play in the Friday night game against the New England Patriots. Regarding his preseason availability, Daniels said he 'loves' playing football, but the decision to rest was not his.
'I love playing football, but I don't make those type of decisions,' Daniels said, via NBC4 Sports' JP Finlay.
When asked if he wishes he had more time to ramp up with McLaurin, Daniels seemed to roll his eyes and said he only 'controls what he can control.' The question also pertained to Noah Brown, who continues to progress from a knee injury suffered in minicamp.
McLaurin has been away from the team for nearly the entire offseason, holding out while seeking a contract extension. The 29-year-old most recently requested a trade, though the Commanders believe that the relationship is still salvageable.
Throughout the process, Daniels seemed to be on McLaurin's side. However, with the season quickly approaching, he seems to be coming around to the idea that he will need to prepare to be without his leading receiver.
Commanders' receiver corps without Terry McLaurin
The Commanders did not play most of their starters in their preseason opener, but they did release their first unofficial depth chart. Washington still listed McLaurin as a starter, along with Brown and Deebo Samuel.
Should McLaurin's holdout persist, Samuel will likely become Daniels' No. 1 target. The former All-Pro has been criticized by fans for his apparent weight gain over the offseason, but he is still the most dynamic and proven receiver on the team.
In the event McLaurin misses Week 1, one of Luke McCaffrey, K.J. Osborn or Michael Gallup will replace him in the starting lineup. Of the three, the Commanders have the highest hopes for McCaffrey, their third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, Gallup and Osborn have starting experience with the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings, respectively.
The biggest wild card of the Commanders' fluctuating receiving room is rookie Jaylin Lane, whom they added in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Washington currently lists Lane as a third-stringer on the depth chart, but he could soar as high as the starting lineup by September.

The new Roki looks like the old Roki
In Dodgers minor league games for Thursday, August 14th, eyes were on the mound in Oklahoma City as appearances by Roki Sasaki, Michael Kopech, and Bobby Miller all had implications for the parent Dodgers. Roki Sasaki made a rehab start as the Dodgers hope that he might contribute to the parent Dodgers during the pennant stretch and possibly postseason. It didn't go well. Sasaki threw 41 pitches (25 strikes) in two innings of work, giving up three runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out nobody. His velocity, closely watched from day one after Sasaki specifically focused on that in team interviews prior to signing, was mostly 92-94 mph, never reaching 96. Sasaki threw over 100 mph in Japan before losing some velocity and effectiveness in his last season there. This was his first outing since he was shut down, so the Dodgers can hope things will improve as he builds himself up. Not helping the Dodgers' collective psyche was another rough rehab appearance, this time by Michael Kopech. Kopech couldn't get through an inning, giving up two walks and two hits in the course of getting two outs. The Dodgers picked up Kopech mid-season last year, and he barely gave up a run for the rest of the season (three total runs in 24 games). He showed up injured to spring training, made it back for eight scoreless appearances, then went back on the injured list. For some good news, Bobby Miller may have found himself in the bullpen. His shutout inning gave him six straight scoreless appearances (seven innings), during which time Miller has only allowed one hit and one walk. Ronan Kopp pitched two perfect innings, and he seems to have found his groove in Triple-A with three straight scoreless performances, striking out eight in four and one-third innings. Kopp, who went over a month without giving up an earned run (15 appearances) prior to being promoted to OKC, has 68 strikeouts in 44 innings on the season, with 34 walks. Notably, he has not given up a home run in 39 games. As far as the game, the Albuquerque Isotopes beat the Oklahoma City Comets 8-5. The offense put up 13 hits (six extra-base hits) and six walks, but could only convert that into five runs. Esteury Ruiz had a productive game with two hits, two walks, a home run, and two stolen bases. Maybe it's not as weird as I think. For the fifth time in about four days, a Dodgers affiliate has pulled off this same pattern. The starting pitcher goes exactly five innings and gives up one run, and the bullpen closes with four scoreless innings. Patrick Copen worked around some traffic, yielding six hits and four walks in five innings, but only one run. James Tibbs III had three hits and is now hitting .317 as a Dodger in 11 games, with a 9/10 strikeout/walk ratio. 23-year-old catcher Nelson Quiroz, promoted to Double-A after hitting .367 in 98 at-bats in High-A, so far hasn't found the pitching-dominant Texas League to be much more of a challenge. In 47 at-bats for Tulsa, Quiroz is hitting .362. A five-run eighth inning turned the game around as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Great Lakes Loons 8-6. Logan Tabeling, in his High-A debut, got roughed up for those five runs, taking home a loss and a blown save as souvenirs. Zyhir Hope, hitting .125 in 40 at-bats in August, got two hits, and Jake Gelof hit his tenth home run. Kendall George was on base four times with two hits and two walks, so naturally, he stole four bases. The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored five runs in the first two innings. and the Visalia Rawhide could never catch up, the game ending in a 7-4 score. 2024 round-18 draft pick Isaac Ayon made his first appearance in Low-A ball and lasted two and two-thirds innings, giving up one run on two hits. Niko Perez drove in three runs for the Quakes, and Mairoshendrick Martinus hit his fifth home run. Report – Inter Milan & Atalanta Still At A ‘Total Stalemate' Over Lookman Transfer
Inter Milan and Atalanta are reportedly still at a 'total stalemate' over the transfer of forward Ademola Lookman. This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. They report that the player has returned to Portugal, while news on the transfer saga will come on Sunday at the earliest. The transfer saga between Inter, Atalanta, and Ademola Lookman has now dragged on for the better part of a month. Inter have made two offers for the Nigerian international. First, they made a bid worth €40 million all-in. Then, after Atalanta rejected that, they increased it to €45 million including add-ons. Atalanta then rejected Inter's second bid for Lookman. And in the meantime, the former RB Leipzig forward has done everything he possibly can to force through a move to Inter. Lookman has publicly demanded a transfer. he has also no-showed training for well over a week. However, Lookman has returned to Portugal after spending the last few days in England. He is training alone to keep his fitness up for the new season. According to Sky Sport Italia, there could be new contacts on Sunday at the earliest. This could see Lookman's situation change. For now, however, things have slowed down to a standstill.

ESPN predicts how Notre Dame will fare in the College Football Playoff
On Friday morning two ESPN analysts, Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach predicted how the College Football Playoff would play out and both of them had much different outlooks for Notre Dame. They do think that the Irish will make the field of 12-teams, but with varying results. Bonagura has Notre Dame having a rematch of its season-opening game against No. 11 Miami as the No. 6 seed while Schlabach has the Irish as the No. 7 seed taking on No. 10 LSU. While Notre Dame is eligible to get a first-round bye, they don't think that will be the case this year. It could be a blessing in disguise, as all four teams that sat out the first-round of the CFP lost its second-round game last year. Schlabach doesn't have Notre Dame moving past the initial game, while Bonagura does. He has them matching up against No. 3 Ohio State, only to fall to the Buckeyes once again. As for the eventual championship game, they both have their No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams facing off, but with different matchups. Bonagura has No. 2 Penn State facing No. 1 Texas, while Schlabach has No. 2 Clemson also taking on the Longhorns. After what we saw last year, it's hard to say that the top-two teams will eventually play for a championship, as neither the Irish or the Buckeyes were one of the top seeds. This isn't how I see it playing out, as I think that the Irish will get a top-4 seed, and an easier path in the CFP. How do you see it playing out?
