Nearly 1mil Terengganu residents overweight or obese, says health dept

KUALA TERENGGANU : About 76% of Terengganu's population, equivalent to 988,000 out of 1.3 million residents, are either overweight or obese, according to the state health department.
Its director Dr Kasemani Embong said the figure marks a worrying increase of 15.2% from 60.8% recorded in 2011.
'What's more concerning is that one in three teenagers, or over 30%, in the state are struggling with weight issues. This is largely due to unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles,' she said.

She warned that this trend could further raise the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems and high blood pressure, which are already prevalent in the state.
'Among teenagers, the constant use of gadgets and the easy availability of unhealthy food are major contributors to this problem,' she added when speaking at a fun run held in conjunction with the 2025 Obesity Awareness Campaign at Dataran Batu Buruk here today.
To address the issue, she said the state health department is intensifying public health programmes, including the 'War On Sugar' campaign, which aims to raise awareness about hidden sugars in food and beverages.
Kasemani also encouraged the public to drink more water and prepare healthier meals at home as a way to reduce sugar intake.

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad says the government's introduction of a basic medical and health insurance and takaful (MHIT) product marks the first step in the phased implementation of a diagnosis-related group (DRG) pricing system. Speaking at the launch of the APHM International Healthcare Conference & Exhibition 2025 here today, he said the product would broaden private sector financing options and steer private healthcare towards a value-based healthcare model. 'We are also exploring a more diversified health financing ecosystem that will combine tax-based allocations, social contributions, employer-based schemes and targeted subsidies under a progressive and equitable framework,' he said. In March, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the finance ministry, Bank Negara Malaysia, and the EPF would develop MHIT products in view of the rising medical costs. He said the initiative was part of the national health sector reform effort to ensure access to more sustainable medical treatment. Dzulkefly said the DRG pricing system would be a key driver for value-based healthcare, with fairer rules for those with pre-existing conditions in the context of an ageing nation where the prevalence of non-communicable diseases is high. 'Diagnosis-related groups incentivise efficiency. 'We expect this to drive innovation in ambulatory and day-case surgery, and expand the use of health technologies that demonstrate strong cost-effectiveness in improving health outcomes and reducing total costs,' he said. Separately, he said a joint ministerial committee would coordinate health-focused initiatives under GEAR-uP, which will see six GLICs invest RM120 billion in 'high growth, high value' industries over five years to stimulate domestic economic growth. 'This is expected to drive further investments into the health sector, particularly in the spectrum of healthcare providers, not limited to large multi-speciality tertiary hospitals,' he said. Dzulkefly also said that 78 health clinics had adopted the cloud-based clinic management system, with another 90 set to come on board later this year. He said the clinics saw more than 70% of patients receiving treatment in under 30 minutes, 20% attended to within 30 to 60 minutes, and 10% attended to within 90 minutes.

Connectivity at Putrajaya Hospital satisfactory, minor network issues in new wing, says Fahmi
PUTRAJAYA, June 9 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil today said the management of Putrajaya Hospital had expressed satisfaction with the overall internet and mobile network coverage within the facility. However, he noted that concerns were raised regarding connectivity issues in the hospital's newly built wing. 'I took the opportunity to speak with hospital management regarding internet connectivity within the hospital premises. Overall, they expressed satisfaction with both internet and mobile coverage. 'However, they noted some issues in the new wing involving one of the telecommunications service providers,' he told reporters after presenting a contribution under the Kasih@Hawana Fund here today. He said the provider in question would be asked to assess and optimise its services in the affected area to ensure consistent and reliable coverage for patients, staff and visitors. Last year, Fahmi said that hospitals were identified as one of the top seven priority areas for improved network coverage. He said that while some public hospitals have continued to face connectivity challenges, the broader initiative aimed to resolve long-standing in-building mobile coverage issues and support the integration of 5G technology for more advanced medical applications.

Minister: Malaysian Haj pilgrim dies in Mecca, marking tenth fatality this season
MECCA, June 9 — Another Malaysian Haj pilgrim has died in Makkah, bringing the total number of Malaysian deaths during the 1446H/2025M Haj season to ten. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, said the deceased, Abdul Malik Sudin, 62, died of a heart attack at King Abdullah Hospital. He was a pilgrim from Maktab 90A and had been staying at the Rehab Al-Janadriyah building. He had completed the wukuf ritual in Arafah last Thursday. Speaking to reporters after attending the 1446H Haj Season Closing Ceremony organised by the Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah last night, Mohd Na'im said the Pilgrims Fund Board (TH) has contacted the family and will manage all funeral arrangements and related welfare matters. On behalf of TH's senior management, Mohd Na'im extended condolences to the family and prayed that the deceased is granted Allah's mercy and that his good deeds are accepted. To date, nine Malaysian pilgrims have died of heart attacks, while one succumbed to a bacterial infection and organ failure. — Bernama
