WWE Raw takeaways: CM Punk returns, spoils Seth Rollins' title shot
WWE Monday Night Raw on May 5 took place at CHI Health Center in Omaha, Neb., and featured a World Heavyweight Championship match between Jey Uso and Seth Rollins.
The go-home episode for Backlash saw Rusev compete in his first match since returning, Sheamus was also back in action against Austin Theory, Penta picked up a win over JD McDonagh, and Pat McAfee went at Gunther on the mic.
Check out the top takeaways from this episode:
Paul Heyman goes deep into his promo bag
Kicking off this week's episode was the champ, "Main Event" Jey Uso, looking for a face-to-face with Logan Paul. Instead, get was greeted by another Paul, The Bloodline's former Wiseman, Paul Heyman.
It didn't take much for Uso to set Heyman off, but boy, oh boy, did he go off. Uso said he had "a lot of balls" entering the ring with him after betraying his family. Heyman went from zero to 100 as he vented about how his "best friend" CM Punk put him in an impossible position at WrestleMania. He then addressed Roman Reigns, who he called a "stray Big Dog on the Island of Irrelevancy" and turned him in to the "Tribal Chief." Heyman blamed Reigns for leaving him alone with The Bloodline while he sulked after losing the title to Cody Rhodes.
Heyman then nearly gave himself a heart attack as he went off about being right in this whole situation. It was an intensely passionate moment. Oscar-worthy acting, some would say.
Uso simply quipped, "Are you OK?" Uso then asked what all of this has to do with him. That's when Heyman said he came out to announce Seth Rollins was challenging him for the World Heavyweight Championship, and would give him the choice of which night he would lose the title.
Uso replied that if it was to be anytime, anyplace, then that time and place would be tonight.
In a backstage segment with Rollins and Bron Breakker, Heyman said Uso "fell for it." Heyman then explained the whole plan to Breakker, who was either confused about what just happened, or was upset it wasn't him getting the title shot. It was legitimately difficult to read what he was going for there.
This was a fantastic opening promo segment. Heyman's intensity was amazing, and Uso's immediate call for Rollins to step up later in the show was the best response he could have offered. More on the main event match later.
Dominik Mysterio to defend IC title vs. Penta
Everyone's favorite Intercontinental Champion, Dominik Mysterio found out that he will be putting his title on the line at Backlash against Penta, the man who defeated his Judgment Day stablemate JD McDonagh.
Mysterio didn't seem to sweat it, but AJ Styles barged into the Judgment Day room to announce he was coming after whoever holds the IC title after Backlash.
Lyra Valkyria checks Becky Lynch, again
Becky Lynch took to the ring to talk about taking out the trash (Bayley) and the recycling (Lyra Valkyria). She was building a clever promo before Valkyria appeared to question her about being labeled as recycling when all Lynch does is recycle everything about her character.
The two went back and forth on the mic, and it felt like Valkyria once again took the upper hand. When Lynch was done exchanging words, she took a swipe at Valkyria, and after a little scuffle, ended up laid out on the ground with the women's IC champ holding the title high.
Lynch returning to the women's IC title picture has been a fantastic decision. The promos with Valkyria have been great every time, creating arguably the best of the very short builds to Backlash.
IYO SKY beats Roxanne Perez, gets jumped after
For no reason other than just putting a banger of a match on the lineup, IYO SKY faced Roxanne Perez in a non-title match.
Non-title matches so the winner can earn a title shot is the most ridiculous concept, but I'll look past it here since IYO SKY has been on fire with the fans lately. The match was unsurprisingly good.
After IYO SKY pinned Perez in a fun ending sequence of rollups, the champ shook hands with Perez. IYO SKY attempted to get the crowd to clap for Perez, but in doing so, she was attacked from behind by Giulia. Unlike last week, Rhea Ripley was unavailable to run out to help.
It'll be interesting to see how this whole thing develops in the coming weeks once Perez and Giulia get some promo time to really see where this is heading.
CM Punk returns to spoil Seth Rollins' title shot
The main event between Seth Rollins and Jey Uso closed the show, and to be honest, it was turning into the best match Uso has had in recent memory. It was certainly better than the WrestleMania match against Gunther.
However, being a randomly announced match on a Monday night, you just knew that this finish wouldn't be clean. Sure enough, Bron Breakker got involved, which prompted Sami Zayn to come out to assist. After things were evened out, it seemed like Uso was going to pull off a pin anyway, but then CM Punk made his return, costing Rollins his title opportunity by attacking him with a chair.
It's kind of funny Uso's best match took place on a Monday before a PLE instead of at a big event, but then again, he wasn't facing Rollins in any of his recent PLE matches. The story of the new faction wanting Uso's title is intriguing, though. Hopefully it continues after Backlash, where Uso should defeat Logan Paul – who, ended up blindsiding Uso after the show went off the air.

WWE SmackDown takeaways: Seth Rollins' crew runs the show; John Cena, Logan Paul set trap

WWE SmackDown takeaways: Seth Rollins' crew runs the show; John Cena, Logan Paul set trap WWE Friday Night SmackDown on June 6 took place at Dignity Health Arena in Bakersfield, Calif., featuring the team of John Cena and Logan Paul coming face-to-face with Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso. The go-home episode for Money in the Bank was another typical rush-to-the-finish-line final show before a PLE, complete with a pointless 6-person tag match. Seth Rollins' new faction essentially took over the show, appearing multiple times to deliver promos and disrupt in-ring action. We also saw the Wyatt Sicks strike fear into the entire tag team division and the team of Andrade and Penta put on a fun one against the Creed Brothers. Check out the top takeaways from this episode: Seth Rollins, Solo Sikoa trade barbs; Jacob Fatu assists Jimmy Uso In what was the first of many appearances for the still-officially-unnamed group of Seth Rollins, Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, and Paul Heyman, the faction took the ring to open the show. Rollins vowed to win MITB while warning others to stay out of their way, or suffer the same fate as Sami Zayn, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns. Enter Solo Sikoa, along with JC Mateo and Jacob Fatu. Sikoa, arguably the best mic worker on the WWE roster right now, tested Rollins' warning while taking shots at Breakker and Reed, comparing them to The Bloodline's second and third men. Rollins chirped back, this time getting Fatu involved. Eventually, they all step to one another, but Sikoa's side exited the ring without getting physical. The crowd started cheering loudly, but it wasn't for Rollins' team. It was because Jimmy Uso appeared from behind to attack, leading to the start of a match against Mateo. The match ended up being very solid, with Uso flying all over Bakersfield. The ending was a surprise. Not only did Uso kick out of Mateo's finisher, but a distraction from Fatu allowed Uso to hit a rollup pin for the victory. Naturally, Mateo vented his frustrations with Fatu to Sikoa. The opening promo was pretty standard "I'm going to win at the PLE" stuff on the surface, but this really served to plant more seeds for the eventual breakup of Fatu from Sikoa and Mateo. It could also lead to any mix and match of the six wrestlers, which would all be entertaining. Giulia assists Zelina Vega, then attacks Women's United States Champion Zelina Vega doesn't have a match at MITB, so she put her title on the line the night before instead. Oh, no. Wait. No, she didn't. She was in a non-title "Bakersfield Brawl" match against Piper Niven, who had Chelsea Green and Alba Fyre with her at ringside. At least they gave Vega a full entrance this week. So, the match itself wasn't bad by any means. Kendo sticks, chairs and tables all got some use here. Vega hit a beautiful counter DDT to smash Niven's face into a chair, but then the numbers game caught up. However, Vega got assistance from an unlikely party in Giulia. With use of a kendo stick, Giulia helped Vega powerbomb Niven through a table for the pin. After, Giulia raised Vega's arm in celebration, only to blindside her and hit her finisher. She then lifted the US title high as Vega was down. Giulia is coming for the US title, and it's a fantastic program for her to be in as she settles into the SmackDown roster. Despite the Vega-Niven match being non-title, everything else here worked well, including the tease for the future match against Giulia for the title. King and Queen of the Ring to return WWE is bringing back King and Queen of the Ring tournaments, as announced by Raw and SmackDown GMs Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis – and the matchups start next week. After the announcement, Jade Cargill made her promise to win the crown, but Charlotte Flair of course, interrupted to say everyone knows there's only one queen of WWE. Short takeaway here, but this is welcome. The King and Queen of the Ring is a staple of the WWE's lineup. My only wish is that they don't force "King" and "Queen" labels on the winners' names as part of a pseudo-gimmick change – unless it just makes sense. Imagine if LA Knight wins. King Knight? Nah. Rhea Ripley, Alexa Bliss and Stephanie Vaquer win six-woman tag There's only one takeaway from the pointless six-woman tag match featuring all competitors of the women's MITB match: We got to see Stephanie Vaquer's new entrance, and it's incredible. The team of Rhea Ripley, Alexa Bliss and Vaquer defeated Naomi, Roxanne Perez and Giulia. Sure, there were a few fun moments in the match, and all of the competitors are fantastic, but this was all pointless considering they will all be working against each other at MITB on Saturday. John Cena, Logan Paul lay trap for Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso Taking the ring for the fourth or fifth time was Seth Rollins' crew. This time it was Paul Heyman on the mic cutting a promo on Rollins' behalf for MITB. They were soon joined by Cody Rhodes, followed by Jey Uso – but during Uso's entrance, which was through the concourse and crowd, Rollins and crew exited before the show went to commercial. Rhodes and Uso shared the mic for a mid promo before John Cena entered. Logan Paul then attacked from behind. There were no words exchanged here, just AAs from Cena, and knockout punches and splashes from the top rope by Paul. Cena vowed to continue his plan to ruin wrestling. He said Paul will be the future World Heavyweight Champion. After delivering those words on the mic, the beatdown continued and the crowd started chanting for R-Truth. "You can't handle the truth!" Cena quipped. This only prompted more chants for the recently released wrestler. Good on Bakersfield. Paul grabbed Uso's title and joined Cena in hoisting gold high as the show concluded. Since Rollins worked overtime on SmackDown, his show of strength will likely mean a loss at MITB, but we will know in a few hours. The final segment with Cena, Paul, Rhodes and Uso was alright, but nothing special. Considering this match one of only four announced for the show, here's to hoping it turns out to be better than it has any right to be. We'll likely get a big return appearance too. If Roman Reigns doesn't appear, I'll be surprised.

WWE star The Miz discusses John Cena's farewell tour, says it 'would be incredible' to have one last match

The John Cena farewell tour has taken its twists and turns. The 17-time WWE champion "sold his soul" to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, turned on his fan base and defeated Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41. Since then, Cena has vanquished Randy Orton and aligned himself with Logan Paul entering the WWE Money in the Bank premium live event. There will be endless suitors for Cena's opponents with only a few dates left on his calendar. WWE star The Miz expressed hope he could be one of those challengers. One of the first major feuds for The Miz was against Cena in 2009. He coined his famous catchphrase, "Because I'm The Miz and I'm … Awesome!" And he developed his skull-crushing finale finishing maneuver. The two were even tag-team champions for off of about nine minutes. The Miz defeated Cena to retain the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XXVII. "That would be incredible. I think everyone wants to put their name in the hat to have one final match with John Cena," he told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. "And I do believe that this is his farewell tour." The Miz made one thing clear. He does believe this is the end of Cena's in-ring career. Cena has admitted he can't do the things he used to be able to in the ring. As the end for Cena nears, The Miz said fans should cherish the final moments they get to watch Cena. "I know people are like, 'Oh, he'll be back, he'll be back.' When John Cena says he's done in the wrestling ring, he's gonna be done – wrestling," he said. "I think other things he might be able to do, but wrestling in a ring, I think this is the last year we're gonna see him. "So, I think we should cherish it. We should watch it and enjoy what he's doing. Whether you don't like what he is doing or you do like what he's doing, just sit back and watch because he truly is the GOAT."
