Jake Paul's proposed fight with Canelo Alvarez fell apart, so we've been waiting to hear who the Problem Child would fight next. According to multiple reports, Paul is closing in on an agreement to fight former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Nothing is official, and as we've seen in the past, things can change. If Chavez Jr. is the next opponent, it's a perfect fit for Paul at this stage of his career. I actually named him as a realistic next opponent after Paul fought Mike Tyson in 2024.
Critics won't like it, and they will all slam it as a trash fight. But somehow, the fight will still do huge numbers even though everyone you talk to will say they're not interested.
Go figure.

There is no question Chavez Jr. is far past his prime. He could be eyeing this opportunity as a chance to cash in on a massive payday that logically should be out of his reach at this stage of his life.
That's fine, because if Paul fights him, the YouTuber-turned-boxing needle-mover gets a nearly ideal situation for himself too.
At 39, Chavez is still a good amount older and likely slower than Paul. More than a decade ago, when he probably should have been in his prime, Chavez Jr. struggled to remain focused and disciplined as a fighter.
While he did win a world title, many believe he failed to live up to the lofty expectations that come with being the son of a legend like his father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. In Chavez Jr's last fight, he defeated former UFC middleweight, Uriah Hall by unanimous decision in July 2024.
At least he's been active recently.
As it is, how much of a threat do we expect Chavez Jr. to pose to Paul in 2025? Not much, but likely more than a 58-year-old Mike Tyson. At least, it would seem that way.
Paul's celebrity and his world-class promotion skills have caused many to want him to accelerate his ascension into tough professional fights. In actuality, he's still very new to the sport.

At 28, Paul had no amateur career, and he's had just 12 pro fights. Most of those fights have come against athletes from other sports. While a good number of them have been combat sports athletes, if we've learned anything over the past 20 years, we should know all fighting is not the same.
Paul's only fight against a known active boxer resulted in his only pro loss—a split-decision setback against Tommy Fury in February 2023. The two men have gone back and forth about a rematch, with Paul offering Fury, the younger brother of the legendary Tyson Fury, $4 million to run it back.
With that fight not coming to fruition, Paul needs to pivot. Color this as a prediction rather than news, but I expect him to fight Chavez Jr. next. I also expect Paul to win that fight by unanimous decision—if nothing else, Chavez Jr. has always had a chin.
At that point, I expect Paul will again launch an all-out verbal assault on some of the biggest names in the fight game as he hunts for an opponent who can hopefully carry some portion of the promotional weight.

BROWN/AFP via Getty Images) Saturday's boxing match between Jake Paul and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is nearly upon us. The two meet in the main event of a boxing card co-promoted by Paul's MVP and Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy. The Paul vs. Chavez fight is scheduled for 10 rounds at a weight limit of 200 pounds. Jake Paul returns to the boxing ring for his first fight since his November 2024 unanimous decision win over Mike Tyson. As for Chavez, Saturday marks the former WBC middleweight champ's first bout since his July 2024 decision win over former UFC fighter Uriah Hall. We look at the Paul vs. Chavez fight betting odds, picks, and predictions. The Paul vs. Chavez boxing card takes place on Saturday, June 28, at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Today, BetOnline has Paul as the -600 favorite over the +390 Chavez. Jake Paul Vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Fight Preview JJake Paul (11-1 with seven knockouts) found a niche for himself fairly quickly as a pro boxer. That niche was targeting MMA fighters with name recognition who were undersized or had undeveloped boxing skills. Paul's wins over Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva got the YouTuber-turned-boxer a lot of attention. In 2023, Paul stepped up in competition, skill, and size to face Tommy Fury. The result of that fight was Paul's first and only pro loss, dropping a split decision to Fury. Paul followed that loss by getting back in the ring with a former UFC fighter in Nate Diaz. Paul won that bout by split decision. Since beating Diaz, Paul is 4-0 with wins over Andre August, Ryan Bourland, Mike Perry, and most recently, Mike Tyson. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (54-6-1 with 24 KOs) has had a hard time shaking the visual of his 2019 loss to Daniel Jacobs, a fight where he came in overweight and quit in the fifth round. Chavez's action on that night left the crowd at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, showering the ring with debris. Chavez is 3-2 since that loss, but he says he will be a different fighter against Paul. "Now I'm disciplined, I'm focused, I want to finish the fight with Paul with a win and take this opportunity to be back in real boxing. That's my goal." Jake Paul Vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Breakdown LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 14: Jake Paul and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. face off during a press ... More conference at The Avalon on May 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) Jake Paul is very selective when it comes to his opponents. Over the past few years he's carefully picked competition who have name recognition and who can draw eyeballs to his fights. That approach has largely paid off for Paul as he only has one loss on his record. Paul is not cosplaying as a boxer. He has skills and from all appearances he trains hard and takes the sport seriously. He deserves respect and notice for that. However, he's not facing the cream of the crop when it comes to his career, and that's by (smart) choice. Chavez is the most skilled fighter Paul has faced, outside of Tyson, but like Tyson, who was 58 when he faced Paul, there are questions about how effective a 39-year-old Chavez can be in 2025. After all, he has only fought once since 2021 and that was against a fomer UFC fighter in Uriah Hall. Even when he was in his prime there were questions about how dedicated Chavez was to the craft of boxing and how hard he trained. Chavez is saying all the right things heading into this contest, but then again, this is a man with a 2021 loss to an aging Anderson Silva on his record, a man Paul defeated by unanimous decision. Jake Paul Vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Predictions And Picks LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 14: Jake Paul looks on during a press conference at The Avalon on May ... More 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) If Chavez comes into this fight at 100 percent and is ready to compete, he has the skills to beat Paul. So, that's the question. Is Chavez going to slip the ropes at the Honda Center on Saturday night at 100 percent? Paul is betting against that. Should you do the same? I don't think so. Expect Paul to respect Chavez's skills in this fight if he shows those attributes early. If Chavez looks as if he isn't taking Paul seriously, look for Paul to be aggressive and make Chavez pay for that disrespect. A dialed-in Chavez has the tools to beat a younger and more athletic Paul, but we haven't seen that version of Chavez in a long while. With that, look for Paul to grind his way to a decision. Jake Paul Vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Full Card: Date, Time & How To Watch

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 14: Jake Paul during a boxing news conference at the Avalon Hollywood ... More Theatre in Los Angeles on May 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) The 13th professional fight of Jake Paul's boxing career is Saturday night in Anaheim, California. Paul will headline a DAZN card on Saturday night when he takes on former middleweight champion and second-generation fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Here are the details on the event, including the fight card. Paul vs. Chávez Jr. Full Fight Card and Viewing Info Paul - Chavez Jr. Fight Card The motivation for this Paul fight doesn't appear to be at the same level as some of his previous bouts. We can't compare it to the Mike Tyson fight, as that was a once-in-a-lifetime novelty event. But compared to Paul's clash with Mike Perry and Nate Diaz, this scrap with Chavez Jr. doesn't seem to be moving the needle as much. Blame that on fans' lack of belief in, or knowledge of, Chavez. Even at 39, a fighter who has accomplished as much as Chavez Jr. has in his career should represent Paul's stiffest competition since he lost a split. Still, Paul is a massive minus-575 favorite, while Chavez Jr. is a plus-400 underdog. That's pretty amazing considering the difference in experience and the fact that Chavez is only 39 years old. (Photo by) In any case, if Paul wins as expected, it would not surprise me to see him get an opportunity to challenge for a cruiserweight title. There's a potential problem there for 'The Problem Child.' Jai Opetaia and Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez (who fights on the Paul-Chavez Jr. card) have all but one of the recognized world titles at cruiserweight. Opetaia and Ramirez are serious champions who would represent such a massive step up in competition for Paul that it might be dangerous for him to bark up those trees. The Prompt: Get the week's biggest AI news on the buzziest companies and boldest breakthroughs, in your Subscribed! You're Subscribed! That's especially the case with Opetaia, who is a nasty KO finisher fighting in his prime. A more interesting fight for Paul—if he were to get a title shot after the Chavez fight—would be against WBC champion Badou Jack. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has already said he believes Paul should be ranked if he beats Chavez. That comment makes a title fight later this year more realistic. Jack is a seasoned pro. He's gritty and tough as they come. However, Jack is 41 years old, and he has been in a ton of wars. That said, he hasn't lost a fight since he dropped a split decision to Jean Pascal in December 2019. More Cruiserweight title fight on the Fatal Fury City of Wolves card at ANB Arena on May 03, 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. (Photo by) Jack is far from a household name, but he would be the most respected opponent Paul has faced. And that fight would represent a natural progression for the Problem Child at this stage of his boxing journey. First things first, he's got to take care of Chavez Jr. Most don't believe the latter will take the fight—or his training leading up to it—seriously enough to make a solid showing. Perhaps we'll all be surprised, and the two men will put on a memorable show. It would be great to see Paul in a competitive fight. We haven't seen that since the split decision loss to Tommy Fury in February 2023. Be on the lookout for my live results, beginning with the Farmer-Schofield clash.
