First look at Gary Lineker in new ITV role on 'unpredictable and thrilling' show

Yahoo4 days ago
Legendary broadcaster, footballer and king of the crisps Gary Lineker will be at the helm of a new ITV show called The Box. Famously dubbed as the 'fox in the box' on the football pitch, Gary will be supervising not just one but 10 yellow boxes, each containing a celebrity contestant. They will then be whisked off to unknown locations, before being unleashed to confront whatever game lies beyond the door.
The series is produced by Twofour (part of ITV Studios), and the creators of BBC's new reality competition show Destination X fronted by Gavin and Stacey's Rob Brydon.
The Box is said to catapult the celebrity contestants into a show unlike any other. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter.

Each episode will present the celebrities with unexpected reveals, unique games, and an engaging series arc - as every week two players will face The Duel, a dramatic show finale which will see the loser exiting the competition for good.
The former football player is excited to take on the new challenge of hosting the show. Gary said: "I can't wait to host The Box. I've always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar.
"The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control. It's going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I'm excited that I get to have a front row seat to all the action!"
ITV's Director of Entertainment, Reality & Daytime Commissioning, Katie Rawcliffe commented: "Gary is the perfect fit for The Box, an entertaining, exhilarating and immersive new format."
Chief Content Officer at Twofour, Dan Adamson also expressed his excitement about the project. He said: "We're delighted to be making The Box with ITV and Seefood TV. From the first time we saw those iconic yellow boxes open in an incredible location we were hooked.
"Now, with Gary on board we have the ideal Master of Ceremonies to make this real event telly, he is after all a man who knows what it's like under pressure in the box. He's sure to raise the competitive spirit as our cast bursts out of those boxes, into unknown, ambitious and spectacular challenges."
Not only are Twofour responsible for Gary's new series and Destination X but the Emmy and BAFTA award-winning unscripted label that is part of ITV Studios, has quickly become a hub for top global travel, reality and adventure formats. These include I Kissed a Boy and I Kissed a Girl for the BBC, The Reluctant Traveller for Apple TV+, and the recently announced The Heat for ITV.
First aired in Norway in January this year, The Box was conceived and produced by Seefood TV and has promptly been commissioned for a second series, with other territories following suit to secure their own versions.
Meanwhile, the series will be filmed in the UK later this year and broadcast on ITV in 2026. The show is being pitched as a spiritual successor to Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.
This move to ITV comes as the 64-year-old former Match of the Day presenter left the BBC earlier this year following controversy over a social media post.
Lineker's emotional departure from the BBC in May saw him end his 25-year tenure on Match of the Day amid an antisemitism row.
The former England striker had posted a pro-Palestinian video on Instagram that included a rat emoji, prompting criticism and accusations of promoting a harmful trope.
Lineker later apologised, saying he was unaware of the symbol's connotations and added: 'I would never consciously repost anything anti-Semitic – it goes against everything I stand for."
His final broadcast for the BBC featured a tribute montage and a visibly emotional farewell, during which Lineker said: 'It's been an absolute privilege to host Match of the Day for a quarter of a century. It's been utterly joyous.
"Thank you for all your love and support over the years.'

Michael J. Fox makes rare appearance to celebrate 'Back to the Future' 40th anniversary

Forty years after "Back to the Future's" release, Michael J. Fox isn't done delighting fans. The Emmy-winning actor, 64, on Aug. 10 attended a Southampton, New York, IMAX screening of the film that jump started his career on the big screen. The crowd at the sold-out stayed afterward for his conversation with Southampton Playhouse's artistic director, Eric Kohn, with topics ranging from the twists in Fox's life and career over the past four decades – including his life with Parkinson's disease – to his work with his Michael J. Fox Foundation. "Michael's insights into his relationship to acting, and how it changed — first via blockbuster success and then through his diagnosis — made for a conversation that was by turns emotional, endearing, and inspirational," Kohn wrote in an Aug. 12 Instagram post. The Oscar-winning film from Robert Zemeckis was made on a $19 million budget and released in theaters on July 3, 1985. It went on to earn $224 million at the worldwide box office and has since become a Hollywood classic, even getting inducted into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry in 2007. Fox reprised his role as teen Marty McFly, alongside Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, in two more "Back to the Future" movies. Lloyd, 86, has also continued to appear in films and TV shows, most recently the second season of "Wednesday" and "Hacks." He made a rare public appearance alongside wife Lisa Loiacono at the Hollywood premiere of his latest project, the Bob Odenkirk-starring "Nobody 2," on Aug. 11. A 'tsunami of misfortune' Michael J. Fox talks broken bones due to Parkinson's symptoms Michael J. Fox doesn't 'fear' death Since publicly revealing his Parkinson's diagnosis in 1998 – seven years after his diagnosis – Fox has continued to act in Hollywood while also advocating for and funding Parkinson's research through his foundation. In January, President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom as he "warms hearts and captivates audiences as a fearless advocate for those with Parkinson's disease." The fastest-growing neurodegenerative condition in the U.S., Parkinson's is an incurable brain disorder, a progressive disease "that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination," according to the National Institute on Aging. Over the years, Fox has sustained multiple broken bones, including both arms, his shoulder, his orbital bone and cheek and his hand, which resulted in a serious infection. Fox combats his symptoms, such as paralysis of his facial muscles, through medication and trains to preserve his ambulatory skills. "One day I'll run out of gas," Fox told Town & Country magazine in 2023. "One day I'll just say, 'It's not going to happen. I'm not going out today.' If that comes, I'll allow myself that. "Certainly, if I were to pass away tomorrow, it would be premature, but it wouldn't be unheard of. And so, no, I don't fear that."

‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' surging in Emmy predictions after shocking cancellation

What a difference a week — and a shocking cancellation — makes. When the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on July 15, the Best Variety Talk Series race appeared to be a slam dunk for The Daily Show. However, following CBS' so-called "purely financial decision" to end The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on July 17, the forecast has become clouded. More from Gold Derby 'We've gotta get to outer space': Phil Keoghan on the future of 'The Amazing Race' and the upcoming 'Big Brother' 'crossover' season 'Zootopia 2' trailer debuts: Everything you need to know about Disney's sequel to the Oscar-winning hit The Late Show has a 26 percent chance of winning the Emmy, according to the Gold Derby predictions. That's a 19-point surge from the 7 percent chance the show had on the day it was canceled. Stephen Colbert's ascension is the direct result of Gold Derby's experts, editors, and users updating their picks, no doubt believing Television Academy members might want to reward The Late Show for what many see as a political decision, and provide a platform for a charged acceptance Emmy speech from Colbert. Meanwhile, The Daily Show has seen its hopes drop significantly over that same time period. It still leads the Best Variety Talk Series race with a 70 percent chance of winning, but it's down 19 points from 10 days ago. The third nominee, Jimmy Kimmel Live, has remained steady in our rankings at 4 percent. Variety Talk Series Contender Odds 1. The Daily Show 69.2% 2. Late Show with Stephen Colbert 27.1% 3. Jimmy Kimmel Live 3.8% The Daily Show, the reigning champion in this category, rotates hosts among Jon Stewart, Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic. In 2024, the long-running political satire welcomed back Stewart, who originally hosted from 1999 to 2015, to give his comedic take on the presidential election. He still hosts every Monday night, and he recently extended his contract through the end of 2025. Various iterations of The Daily Show have won this Emmy contest a leading 11 times, and a 12th victory would extend its record. Comparatively, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert has never won an Emmy in any category, despite 33 total nominations. (The Showtime special Stephen Colbert's Election Night 2020: Democracy's Last Stand Building Back America Great Again Better 2020 did win an Emmy in 2021 for Best Variety Special — Live.) Colbert's first late-night talker, The Colbert Report, took home seven Emmy Awards during its 10-year reign. He left that series in 2014 to take the reins of The Late Show after David Letterman retired. Fun fact: Jon Stewart is a producer on both The Daily Show and The Late Show, so he'd win an Emmy if either program were to prevail. But there is a third talk show in contention. Jimmy Kimmel Live is a three-time Emmy winner for costumes, picture editing, and music and lyrics ("I'm F--king Matt Damon"), though it's never won the top prize for Best Variety Talk Series. Jimmy Kimmel himself has three Emmys on his mantel for hosting the 2024 Oscars and for producing two installments of Live in Front of a Studio Audience in 2019 and 2020. This year, because there were only 13 submissions on the Emmy ballot, the Best Variety Talk Series category dropped from four nominees to a historic low of three. Left out in the cold were Everybody's Live With John Mulaney, Hot Ones, Late Night With Seth Meyers, Have I Got News for You, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Very Important People, Hart to Heart, Real Time With Bill Maher, Midnight Snack With Julie Chan, and Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. Colbert announced his cancellation during the July 17 broadcast. "Before I start the show, I want to announce something I found out just last night: Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending The Late Show in May," he said. Several boos were heard from the crowd, prompting Colbert to respond, "Yeah, I share your feelings." The host and producer also thanked the 200 people who worked on the program, saying, "It is a fantastic job. I wish someone else was getting it. I am looking forward to doing it for the next 10 months." CBS is retiring The Late Show franchise entirely, concluding a 30-plus-year run that began in 1993 with Letterman. Emmys upheaval: ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' now predicted to win Best Variety Talk Series

Less than a month after CBS shockingly canceled The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the Emmy race for Best Variety Talk Series has been completely upended. Based on initial Gold Derby predictions following the nominations in July, The Daily Show was favored to win its 12th Emmy in the category, extending its record. But in the weeks following The Late Show's cancellation (and shortly after the third nominee, Jimmy Kimmel of Jimmy Kimmel Live, publicly announced he was "voting for Stephen"), there's a new frontrunner in the race for Best Variety Talk Series. More from Gold Derby Beyoncé finally wins an Emmy after 10 nominations: See all the 2025 juried winners 'Something wholly new': 'Alien: Earth' cast and creators make their Emmy case for the 'ambitious' FX series Drumroll, please! Variety Talk Series Contender Odds 1. Late Show with Stephen Colbert 65.5% 2. The Daily Show 30.9% 3. Jimmy Kimmel Live 3.6% According to the Gold Derby tracking data, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert now has a 65 percent chance of winning the Emmy, compared to a 31 percent chance for The Daily Show, and a 4 percent chance for Jimmy Kimmel Live. That's a stark difference from the last time we checked in on this race, on July 29, when The Late Show had a 26 percent chance of eking out a victory. The Late Show has been nominated in the Best Variety Talk Series category nine times without ever winning. In fact, since Colbert took the reins, the show has never won an Emmy, despite 33 nominations across its decade-long run. That's the second most Primetime Emmy nominations without a win for a series after Better Call Saul, which famously went 0-for-53. Kimmel immediately threw his support behind Colbert. Shortly after news of the cancellation broke on July 17, with Paramount saying it was shuttering Colbert's show due to "purely financial" reasons, the Jimmy Kimmel Live host proclaimed on social media, "Love you, Stephen. F--k you and all your Sheldons, CBS." And then last week Kimmel erected his "I'm voting for Stephen" billboard in West Hollywood. The Daily Show is the reigning champion in this category, and currently rotates hosts among Jon Stewart, Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic. As a producer of both The Daily Show and The Late Show, Stewart would take home an Emmy if either of those two programs wins Best Variety Talk Series. He has not yet announced his preference via an FYC billboard. In addition to his nightly show, Colbert will also guest star on the CBS crime dramedy Elsbeth, playing — what else? — a fictional late-night talk show host. Filming reportedly took place in New York City in early August, suggesting the role was planned before CBS announced The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will end next spring. Elsbeth stars Carrie Preston as a quirky investigator who works with the police to solve murders. The 2025 Primetime Emmys will be handed out Sept. 14 during CBS' ceremony hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze. Colbert previously hosted the Emmys in 2017.
