On Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup Snub, R Ashwin's Blunt Verdict: "Extremely Unfair..."

NDTV21 hours ago
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Tuesday expressed disappointment over Shreyas Iyer's exclusion from the Asia Cup squad, terming it "sad" and "unfair" while also questioning the logic behind leaving out opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. The BCCI has named a 15-member India squad for the continental tournament beginning September 9 in the UAE. "Selection is a thankless job. You have to let someone out. When you talk to them, you have to go through that sadness and disappointment in their faces. I hope, someone has talked to Shreyas and Jaiswal," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat.
While Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, was left out, young opener Jaiswal too did not make the cut.
"When you have Jaiswal as your third opener, you have brought Shubman Gill in the team by removing a person from the World Cup winning squad. I mean, I am happy for Shubman but I am very, very sad for both Shreyas and Jaiswal. It's just not fair on both," Ashwin said.
Highlighting Iyer's track record, Ashwin said: "Look at the credentials of Shreyas Iyer. He went out of the team. But came in the Champions Trophy and did amazing batting. He won and gave it to you.
"If the answer is that Shubman Gill is in blasting form, Shreyas Iyer is also in high-quality form. Jaiswal's innings on a tricky pitch in the last game in the Oval... he is also in cracking form. So, how can you give an answer for this? "What Shreyas has done wrong... he did brilliantly well for KKR, made them win. He was sent into the auction. He then took Punjab to the finals for the first time since 2014. He overcame the short ball problem. He was hitting the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Jasprit Bumrah with ease in the IPL. I am just extremely sad for him and Yashasvi Jaiswal; it is extremely unfair." Iyer, who has played 51 T20Is for India, has scored 1104 runs at an average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 136.12. His last appearance in the format came against Australia in December 2023.
The Mumbai batter also has a strong leadership record in the IPL, guiding Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in 2019 and to their maiden final in 2020, before steering KKR to the title last year.
Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar too criticised the selectors' decision, suggesting it signals Iyer is no longer in the reckoning for T20 cricket.
"I can't fathom or understand what reason could justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of the 20-member squad," Nayar told JioHotstar.
"I'm not even talking about the final 15, but the 20 itself, which sends a clear message, that Shreyas Iyer is not in the selectors' scheme of things, at least from a T20 perspective." Gill's elevation as vice-captain, Nayar felt, points towards a long-term leadership role.
"This squad announcement sort of tells you the mindset of the selectors. With selection of Shubman, in time, he is going to be an all-format captain, and that's where they are sort of positioning him.
"Great pick, terrific player. I'm sure he's going to follow the mindset of being attacking, having that approach. And I feel it's going to be a very, very interesting next 12 months in Shubman Gill's life." The selectors also named pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the squad despite recent concerns over his workload, especially with a home series against the West Indies starting in the first week of October.
"We all need to understand that Bumrah is a prized asset. He is the difference between winning and not winning a championship, and that must be respected," Nayar said.
"His workload and his body must be respected, because when you don't have him in crucial matches, the impact is massive. Whatever the plan is, no one knows it better than Bumrah himself. He'll be the best judge of what his body can handle and can communicate that with the selectors and team management.

Hockey India on Wednesday announced the 18-member Indian Men's Hockey squad for the upcoming Hero Men's Asia Cup, scheduled to be held at the recently developed Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar from 29th August to 7th September 2025. India will begin their campaign against China on 29 August, before facing Japan on 31 August and Kazakhstan on 1 September. Speaking on the team selection, Indian Men's Team Coach Craig Fulton said, 'We've gone with an experienced squad that understands what it takes to perform in high-pressure situations. The selection reflects our intent — to put forward a team that can compete strongly and achieve our main objective.' 'I'm very pleased with the balance and quality across the squad. We have leaders in every line — defence, midfield, and attack — and that collective strength is what excites me the most. Sunil Gavaskar on Yashasvi Jaiswal snubbed out of Asia Cup 2025 squad: ‘You can only pick XI in the match and you can only pick 15 in the squad. Somebody has to miss out'

Yashasvi Jaiswal was in the squad for last year's T20 World, which India went on to win. However, since then, Jaiswal has not been part of the T20 bilaterals that India has played. Although Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have performed well at the top, there was an expectation from a few former players that Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has done quite well for the Rajasthan Royals, would get his call, which did not happen. When former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was asked about the same, he said on India Today: 'You can only pick XI in the match and you can only pick 15 in the squad. Somebody has to miss out, that's just one of those in Indian cricket. No point in discussing whether A or B or C should've been there. This is now our team. We can all have our opinions before the selection committee picks the team but once the team is picked, we should back it fully. We shouldn't be saying A should've been there or B should've been there. That only creates controversy, which the players don't need.' From 66 IPL games, Jaiswal has scored 2166 runs at an average of 34.38 and a strike rate of 152.86. However, Shubman Gill, who also has not been a part of the side since last year's series against Zimbabwe, has been made the vice-captain for the showpiece event. 'Not surprising at all. He (Shubman Gill) scored over 750 runs just a couple of weeks ago. You cannot exclude a player in that kind of form. Also, he has done really well in the IPL, which concluded just before the tour to England. It's a very good inclusion. Giving him the vice-captaincy is also a way of telling him that in the future, he could be leading the T20 side. I think it's a very, very good selection,' Gavaskar said.

Shreyas Iyer deserves T20 World Cup spot: Robin Uthappa after Asia Cup snub

Former India batter Robin Uthappa has expressed surprise at Shreyas Iyer's exclusion from India's 15-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, arguing that the Kolkata Knight Riders captain still deserves a place in the national T20I setup, particularly with the T20 World Cup 2026 on the squad for the Asia Cup saw Shubman Gill make his return to the shortest format after more than a year, while also being reappointed as vice-captain. Iyer, however, was left out despite building a strong case through his consistency in the Indian Premier League. He last featured for India in T20Is during the 2023 series against Australia and has not been considered since, even after delivering back-to-back standout IPL guided Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024 and took Punjab Kings to their first final in over a decade earlier this year, scoring heavily across both campaigns. His leadership and batting form had made many believe he would be in contention for India's T20I plans again, but the selectors chose otherwise. Taking to social media, Uthappa questioned the call, noting that India still have plenty of T20Is left before the next World Cup in 2026.'There are around 18 T20Is to go before India play the next #T20WC; not having #ShreyasIyer who was integral in helping you win the CT seems strange. But one can only hope that he gets into this side soon coz he deserves it! I hope they have communicated to him about his exclusion,' Uthappa ahead, India have a packed T20I calendar with series lined up against Australia, England, and South Africa before the 2026 T20 World Cup. Yet for Iyer, the wait to don India's T20I colors continues. His last outing in the format came back in December 2023 when he struck a half-century against Australia, but he has since been overlooked for the Asia Cup, even with his consistent domestic form and leadership selector Ajit Agarkar addressed Iyer's absence at the squad announcement, stating that the decision was purely a matter of balance.'With regards to Shreyas, there's no fault of his—nor is it ours,' Agarkar said. 'We can only pick 15, and at the moment, he might have to wait for his chance.'While Agarkar also explained that Abhishek Sharma's all-round abilities gave him the nod ahead of Yashasvi Jaiswal, he did not offer a specific reason for Iyer's omission- Ends
