Virat Kohli's shocking exit from Tests stuns coach Sarandeep Singh, asserts 'He was preparing for England'; what he said
Virat Kohli's retirement announcement from Test cricket on Monday (12 May) has come as a surprise for everyone. Delhi Ranji Trophy coach Sarandeep Singh who recently interacted with the star batter expressed his shock over the decision, especially given the batter's recent involvement in red-ball cricket with Ranji stint.
Sarandeep Singh revealed he did not expect Kohli to make such a move, especially after his active participation in Delhi's Ranji matches earlier this year.
'When I heard the news this morning about Virat Kohli announcing his retirement, this was a big surprise for me,' expressed Singh while speaking on JioHotstar.
Talking about the Ranji Trophy, he added, "We started talking about the matches he wants to play. He showed his involvement.'
Singh noted that Kohli seemed completely focused on his game in the Test format and even discussed plans for the upcoming England series.
According to Singh, Kohli had already started working towards a strong showing in England and was aiming to prepare through India A matches.
'He was preparing for the England tour, how we would win the Test match," Sandeep said.
"But suddenly, now we see that the person who was ready to go to England will not be going to England," Singh further added.
Singh also mentioned that he had been in touch with Kohli recently but did not sense anything unusual.
'I didn't get to hear about the retirement from him even when I was talking to him a few days ago. I was talking to him through messages, but I didn't get any such intention that he was thinking about something like this,' explained Singh.
Singh shared more about their recent conversation, revealing Kohli's intent to play India A matches to gear up for the Tests.
'I had asked him if he would play county cricket after this. He said, 'no, brother, I want to play matches for India A.' He also said after playing two matches for India A, he would prepare Tests" said Sandeep.
"He wanted to score three to four hundreds, just like the 2018 tour,' he added.
Kohli's sudden retirement announcement has left many puzzled especially those who saw him prepare intensely for the red-ball format.
Kohli ended his Test career with 210 innings for India, scoring 9,230 runs. He has smashed 30 hundreds and 31 fifties in the format and has the highest score of 254*. The 36-year-old is the fourth-highest run-scorer for India in red-ball cricket.

Secondly, it will be off the field and it will be the culture,' Bose told Sportstar. 'How do you conduct yourself when you are not playing? What kind of impression do you carry of yourself when you are presenting yourself to the outer world? Though both these don't happen directly, but through osmosis, it has already happened for the last two weeks. I can see a change already…' In the ever-changing sporting landscape, sustaining a franchise-based league isn't easy, and for a sport which is still considered 'niche', the challenge is always more. 'How to make the RPL sustainable? Of course, you have to have sponsors and media interest. But you'll only get sponsors and media interest once you have a great broadcaster like Jio Hotstar, and once you have a great product. Nobody knows what kind of numbers this league is going to garner. Nobody knows. It's completely virgin territory. So, we will have to see,' Bose, also a noted actor, said. 'So the spillover effect of the RPL obviously has to happen into the larger ecosystem of Indian Rugby. That's something that we have to do. So, I am very, very certain that celebrity endorsement can work both ways. But in this case, I'm not a celebrity. This (the sport) is my childhood, this is my youth. My 30s and my 40s, have all been on a rugby field. So for me, it's like breathing,' he said. Domestic season to kick off on August 28; Duleep Trophy back to zonal format
The 2025-26 domestic cricket season will kick off with the Duleep Trophy, starting August 28, and end with the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy on April 3. The schedule for the upcoming season was announced via a press release after the BCCI's 28th Apex Council meeting on Saturday. The Ranji Trophy is slated to be held from October 15 to February 28. Like last season, the league stage of India's premier First Class competition will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held from October 15 to November 19 while the second phase will involve two rounds from January 22 to February 1. The knockouts will begin on February 6. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy - the T20 and 50-over competitions respectively - will be played during the Ranji break. Among the key decisions taken at the meeting was a return to the zonal format for the Duleep Trophy. In the 2024-25 season, the tournament was played between four teams, named India A, India B, India C and India D, picked by the national selectors. This year, it will again be contested among the six zones – North, South, West, East, Central and North East. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will now include a Super League stage instead of the knockouts. The Super League stage will feature two groups of four teams each based on standings at the end of the league phase. The group toppers will directly contest the final. Meanwhile, the itinerary for New Zealand's white-ball tour of India in January 2026 was also confirmed. The Black Caps will play three ODIs and five T20Is from January 11 to 31.
