Will never support politics of ‘riots & chaos': Mamata
Kolkata/Siliguri: Reiterating that she would never support the "politics of riot and chaos", CM
Mamata Banerjee
said at Fulbari on Tuesday: "I want peace. Some people try to create division among people.
I cannot accept such politics of division."
The CM's statement came a month after protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act turned violent at Murshidabad's Dhuliyan and Shamsherganj.
"Those who indulge in riots do not want people to prosper. Riots destroy lives and houses. Political players find scope for indulging in politics. I don't want riots. I want peace, harmony, devotion and well-being. I want every Bengal household to be filled with prosperity," she said at a public distribution programme near Siliguri.
Banerjee also urged people to not believe everything on social media. "On social networks, fake news is rampant. You should be alert and discard such information," she said.
Bringing up tea garden workers, the CM said Trinamool govt would continue to stand by them, and asked them not to fall for false claims of development and doles by BJP.
"A lot of people claim they will give you a lot of things, but why haven't they done so all these years? They are now claiming they will give benefits of the scheme, but they have not fulfilled the promises made before the polls.
They did not do so in Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan. They make certain claims before elections and then they forget about them, whereas we deliver on our promises. We promised four social welfare schemes, and we fulfilled the same.
If I give my word, I keep it," Banerjee said.
A total of 365 projects across three districts, with a value of Rs 2,505 crore, were announced. Additionally, foundation stones for 134 projects, with an estimated value of Rs 189.4 crore, were laid.
The CM announced that state govt had successfully transferred Rs 1.2 lakh each to 12 lakh poor households from its own funds under the Banglar Bari scheme.
"As we promised, the first instalment, amounting to Rs 7,200 crore, was disbursed last December. Today, the second instalment of 50% of the money started being directly credited to bank accounts. We will also build houses for another 16 lakh eligible families. They will receive their first instalment in Dec and the second instalment in May 2026," she said.
Banerjee also raised questions on money collected by Centre from the state. "The central govt implemented a single tax system across the country for goods and services, known as GST. But then they collect mutation fees from industrialists, and taxes are levied even when vehicles are on the road. These cannot be collected any more. We will not tolerate this. There has to be only one tax; there cannot be two taxes simultaneously.
How much more money do they need?" she said.

Amid talks of patch-up with Uddhav, Raj Thackeray meets CM Devendra Fadnavis at Mumbai hotel
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a five-star hotel in Mumbai, sparking speculation that he may be considering a realignment with the BJP-led Mahayuti government instead of an alliance with cousin Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT). The meeting between the two leaders took place at Taj Lands End in Bandra and lasted over an hour. The meeting was neither pre-announced nor part of either leader's official schedule. The development comes after nearly two months of emotional appeals, symbolic gestures, and strategic signalling by the Shiv Sena (UBT) to reunite the Thackeray cousins under a unified 'Marathi manoos' banner. Uddhav, son Aaditya, and senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders like Sanjay Raut have repeatedly urged a reconciliation, claiming the larger cause of Marathi identity and regional pride warranted a reconciliation. However, while Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders and workers had leaned heavily on public messaging—old photos, social media posts, and even the Saamana front page—the MNS has kept mum. Though Raj hinted on an April 19 podcast that he prioritises Maharashtra over personal disagreements, his party quickly clarified that unity on issues does not equate to electoral alliances. The MNS's top leadership has insisted that no formal proposal has been received. On June 5, Raj's son Amit had bluntly remarked that 'alliances are not formed through media sound bites', making it clear that the MNS was unmoved. Thursday's meeting with Fadnavis deepens that perception. Coming just days before both Raj (June 14) and Aaditya's (June 13) birthdays—an occasion Shiv Sena (UBT) workers had tried to frame as symbolic for unity—this unscheduled engagement with Fadnavis suggests Raj may be playing a different game. According to political observers in the state, the meeting cannot be a mere courtesy call as it comes at a time when the civic polls are set to be held and with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) a key target, an MNS-BJP alliance may gain more traction than a Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS one. Responding to the meeting, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former BMC mayor Kishori Pednekar said that it was too early to comment on the matter. 'Let us wait and watch. Both brothers have called their differences minor, and there is also a shared feeling among the MNS and Sena UBT workers. So let us see how it goes.. it would be inappropriate to jump the gun now,' she said. On Thursday, the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had also offered Raj the opportunity to join hands with them. 'Earlier, too, during the Assembly, we had offered to ally. Now also, we are open to an alliance. We still offer Raj saheb to come with us,' Sena leader and minister Sanjay Shirsat had said.

Bengal govt moves Supreme Court seeking revision of order concerning pending DA
Kolkata: The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court seeking revision of the earlier order related to the clearing of pending dearness allowance. State secretariat sources said in the petition at the Apex Court, the state government had also sought certain clarifications on certain points of the order that was delivered last month. However, the sources added, while moving the petition, the state government is carrying out the preparatory process for paying 25 per cent of the pending dearness allowance dues within the stipulated date. "However, the Supreme Court is on vacation now. Therefore, even though the petition has been filed, it may not be listed for hearing until the vacation period is over. So the state government has kept the preparatory process on for paying the 25 per cent of the pending dearness allowances dues within the Supreme Court stipulated deadline, to avoid any possibility of contempt of court," said a senior official of the state government who did not wish to be named. The immediate payment of 25 per cent of the pending dearness allowance dues will result in an immediate drain-out of over Rs 10,000 crore from the state exchequer, as per calculations of the state Finance Department. Currently, government employees in Bengal receive dearness allowances at a rate of just 18 per cent, as against 55 per cent received by their counterparts in the Centre and many other state governments. The state Finance Department employees also apprehend that this drain-out might also impact some monthly payments under different welfare schemes run by the state government. Last month, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee indirectly blamed the Union government for the DA crisis. She claimed that since the Union government had frozen payments under various centrally-sponsored schemes to the state government, the latter had to continue those projects with its own money, as a result of which there was constant pressure on the state exchequer.
