Aug 9 - Defending champion Jannik Sinner showed no signs of rust after a one-month break as he cruised past Colombian qualifier Daniel Galan 6-1 6-1 in the Cincinnati Open second round on Saturday, while third seed Iga Swiatek thumped Anastasia Potapova 6-1 6-4. World number one Sinner opted to take some time off after his Wimbledon win but was in pristine form at the ATP 1000 event after a first-round bye, producing just four unforced errors.
He will next play Canadian Gabriel Diallo.
"It's very difficult to play here, I feel like the ball is flying, it's very fast," the Italian told Tennis Channel after closing out the match in 59 minutes.
"So when you lose confidence with a couple of shots, it makes it very, very difficult to play."
Poland's Swiatek was back on top form after an early exit in Montreal as she sprinted through the first set and fended off four break points in the second.
She next plays Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who she has defeated in all three previous meetings, in the third round of the U.S. Open tune-up tournament.
Australian Open winner Madison Keys had a tougher opening to her Cincinnati campaign, saving two match points to survive against German Eva Lys with a 1-6 6-3 7-6 win to punch her ticket to the third round where she will play Japan's Aoi Ito.
"I just kept trying to listen to everyone here cheering me," said American Keys, who triumphed in 2019 and clinched Saturday's affair with an unreturnable forehand. "It helped me get back into the match and across the finish line."
Earlier on Saturday, Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech upset Norwegian 11th seed Casper Ruud 6-7 6-4 6-2, while eighth-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti lost to France's Benjamin Bonzi 5-7 6-4 7-6.
The action continues on Saturday when world number one Aryna Sabalenka plays Czech Marketa Vondrousova and fourth seed Taylor Fritz takes on Emilio Nava in an all-American clash.

Emma Raducanu in tense exchange with umpire over crying baby; official's remark slammed as 'unprofessional'

Emma Raducanu on Monday found herself in a tense situation during her Cincinnati Open defeat to world number one Aryna Sabalenka. The 22-year-old lost 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) in a marathon thriller lasting more than three hours against the defending champion. Trailing 3-4, Raducanu struggled to close out the game, reaching deuce 13 times. While fending off multiple break points, controversy erupted when she pulled out of her service motion to point out a distressed child in the stands. "It's been, like, 10 minutes," she told the umpire after retreating to the baseline. The official replied: 'It's a child. Do you want me to kick the child out of the stadium?' Raducanu shrugged before a spectator shouted 'yes' on her behalf. 'I can call in, but we need to continue for the moment,' the umpire added before play resumed. The remark did not sit well with fans on social media. One wrote: 'Why is Emma Raducanu being guilt-tripped by the umpire for a child screaming in the crowd? That was unprofessional and unnecessary.' Another added: 'Surely ask the parent to take the baby out, no? This is a bit dramatic from the umpire.' A third said: 'Why is a kid there? Any noise disruption at Wimbledon — the most prestigious tennis competition of them all — stops play until the issue is resolved.' Raducanu went on to win the game and draw level at 4-4 but eventually fell to world number one Sabalenka, who will take on Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last 16. After the match, Raducanu told reporters: 'She's [Sabalenka] world No. 1 for a reason. "I pushed her more than I did at Wimbledon, so that's an improvement.' She did not, however, address the incident involving the child.

Why did a professional cyclist struggle to watch Jannik Sinner win Wimbledon?

Lizzy Banks, a professional women's cyclist who had failed a drugs test and was eventually given a two-year ban, says she struggled to watch Jannik Sinner play the Wimbledon final. Her reaction was because of how her own career played out because of that ban. Initially, she was given no ban as UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) had agreed that there had been contamination and it was no fault of hers. But WADA refused to accept the opinion of UKAD's expert witness, professor David Cowan, and instead fought for and secured a two-year ban later. Her ordeal began in May 2023 when she took a routine urine test that led to a positive finding for a diuretic called Chrortalidone, which she claims she had not even heard of before. Her conclusion, and which was supported by the professor Cowan after his investigations, was that one of medications she took to treat asthma or a pill she took after a dental treatment perhaps had been contaminated in the manufacturing process. But CAS panel didn't agree to her version and though they described her as a 'peroson of integrity', said that she was unable to prove the source of the contamination and hence warranted a ban, which was back-dated and is now served. It's for this reason that she struggled to watch Sinner play and win Wimbledon. 'Then they came out and said this case [Sinner's] is a million miles from doping. Well, how does that make me feel? Just because I'm little old me and nobody cares about me I have to go through hell, and he gets to go and win Wimbledon.' She told The Times newspaper about how her life was completely upset after the ban. 'I was an athlete of integrity who took the utmost care in her anti-doping responsibilities, who was unknowingly exposed to a contaminant-sized dose of an obsolete diuretic with an impossibility of tracing the source because of a 79-day delay. And so is that really proportional to my career being completely lost, my identity being lost, my health being destroyed for two years, my husband's health being destroyed for two years, loss of earnings for two years, the impact that will have on other earnings in the future. Is that proportional?'
