Rolex 24, Hour 19: Crash shakes up LMP2

Yahoo26-01-2025

A significant contender in LMP2 has fallen after Colton Herta's crash at the West Horseshoe took CrowdStrike Racing by APR out of contention with five hours left at Daytona.
Further inspection when the car was brought back to the pits uncovered a broken rear wishbone. Whether that broken suspension was the cause or the effect of Herta spinning and crashing at the West Horseshoe is yet to be revealed. But it brought out a full course yellow for the first time since sunrise.
Algarve Pro Racing's crew got the car back out on track about 10 minutes ago after rebuilding most of the rear of the car but the No. 04 machine, a strong contender for the LMP2 win today, is now 10 laps down in its class.
The race restarted with five hours and 21 minutes to go, but immediately went back to FCY for a three-car incident in GTD.
Alessandro Pier Guidi in the No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari and Scott Andrews in the No. 80 Lone Star Racing Mercedes-AMG spun going into Turn 1, and Pier Guidi crashed into the side of the No. 78 Forte Racing Lamborghini of Misha Goikhberg. The Lamborghini was towed away, while the Mercedes and Ferrari both limped back to the pits.
Green flag racing is back underway despite a Turn 1 collision between Filipe Albuquerque (No. 10 Cadillac) and Marco Wittmann (No. 25 BMW) that caused a left-rear puncture for the BMW.
Nick Tandy leads in the No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963, ahead of teammate Matt Campbell in the No. 6 Porsche, and Kevin Magnussen in the No. 24 RLL BMW M Hybrid V8. Scott Dixon is fourth in the No. 93 MSR Acura ARX-06 despite just picking up a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pits.
Dane Cameron and AO Racing are fighting at the front of LMP2, Matthieu Vaxiviere is a close second for AF Corse. The No. 99 leads the No. 88, with the No. 8 Tower Motorsports car of Sebastian Alvarez in third and the No. 18 ERA Motorsport car of Ryan Dalziel in fourth.
Neil Verhagen leads GTD PRO for Paul Miller Racing in the No. 1 BMW M4 GT3 EVO, from the No. 4 Corvette of Nico Varrone, the No. 65 Ford of Dennis Olsen and the other Corvette, the No. 3 of Antonio Garcia.
Marvin Kirchhöfer maintains the No. 13 AWA Corvette's lead in GTD but he has the Mercedes-AMG of Kenton Koch, the Porsche of Tom Sargent, and the Aston Martin of Zacharie Robichon right behind him.

BMW Will Make 5 Series Buyers Wait For New Looks And Tech

The current-generation G60 BMW 5 Series was officially revealed a little more than two years ago, on 24 May 2023, and in Bimmer land, that means it's starting to get a little old. BMW likes to put the latest and most advanced technology possible in each of its model updates, so the G60's now-obsolete rotary iDrive wheel and associated systems are beginning to feel a little "last season," so to speak. However, despite the fact that BMW's new Panoramic iDrive infotainment system was revealed six months ago, the 5er isn't getting its mid-cycle update, or Life Cycle Impulse, as early as planned. According to a reliable insider who provides updates on the Bimmerpostforum, the G60 LCI will arrive four months late. According to the post, updates for June 2025 include moving the launch of the updated G60 from March 2027 to July. The same report claims that the next X5 (codenamed G65) will be in production until July 2035, which means it will need to satisfy the market for nine years, while the current F70 1 Series and F74 2 Series Gran Coupe will stick around two years longer than originally anticipated, until October 2032. Back to SUVs for a second, and the assumption is that the G66 X6 and G67 X7 will have similarly long production cycles. Finally, the same report says that the U.S.-spec Z4 M40i and both versions of Toyota Gazoo Racing's Supra will continue to be produced in Austria at the Magna Steyr facility for another two months, only ending production in May 2026. No reasons were given for these extended production cycles, but the ever-changing geopolitical environment may be a contributing factor. The new 5 Series will get the latest infotainment tech, says the forum post, adding that, along with Panoramic Vision, a passenger display will become an optional extra. On the outside, we expect the G60 facelift to wear a new face inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse and Vision Neue Klasse X concepts. The look has already become evident in spy shots of the next-gen M3, as well as the updated G90 M5 seen below, so it's inevitable that the 5er will make the switch too. Hopefully, BMW doesn't create a Russian Doll situation with its styling, but we'll have to wait a little longer to find out. With production only commencing in July 2027, we suspect the reveal will happen at the very end of 2026, if not early in January 2027. With all of that being said, it wouldn't be a surprise to see BMW at least mildly update the interior for 2026, unlocking earlier access to updated iDrive systems. BMW X3 Generations: All The Major Updates Across Four Generations

The BMW X3 followed the X5 as the brand's first compact luxury crossover. While this was still a novel segment for BMW to enter in the early 2000s, it's almost unimaginable for any current luxury automaker not to have a compact crossover in its lineup, such is the popularity of this type of vehicle. Now in its fourth generation, the X3 has changed - and grown - considerably, while also regularly outselling all other BMW models in the United States. Let's take a closer look at each generation of this SUV. Sold between the 2004 and 2010 model years in the USA, the X3 became popular for its nimble size, sharp handling, and smooth six-cylinder engines. In this market, both 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter naturally-aspirated engines were available, and you could even get a manual X3 back then. Originally, the more powerful six-pot made 225 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive was standard, while the optional xDrive system featured variable torque distribution between the front and rear. Later in 2006, a facelift introduced styling revisions to the headlights, grille, taillights, and bumpers. However, looking at all the E83 BMW X3 models by year, it was never a particularly pretty SUV. Although more affordable than the X5, the X3 didn't do a great job of hiding its lower price. The jarring plastic cladding around the body looked cheap, and in no way indicated decent off-roading abilities; Jeremy Clarkson infamously got stuck in the mud in a first-gen X3. Interior quality was no match for the X5 and the ride was far too harsh. It may have been popular, but the E83 failed to live up to BMW's high standards in too many areas. The second-gen X3 ran from the 2011 to 2017 model years in the USA. This was a generation that attempted to right many of the E83's wrongs. Not only did it look more premium, but the F25 felt that way, too, with a refined interior. Efficiency was much-improved for the F25, thanks to new four-cylinder turbo engines, including a diesel that returned 30 mpg combined. Higher up in the range, this gen received BMW's potent 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine, which initially made 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. However, the manual transmission was gone, leaving only an eight-speed across the range. The great naturally-aspirated six-cylinder was last equipped to the X3 for the 2012 model year. BMW's facelift for this X3 was implemented for the 2014 model year. Besides the usual smattering of styling upgrades, new interior materials and a few additional features were introduced. In 2016, the X3 surpassed annual US sales of 40,000 units for the first time. The F25 was a welcome improvement over the first gen, but it had to be, since Mercedes-Benz released the first GLC-Class in 2015. Newer isn't always better, but in the case of the G01 X3, it's safe to say that this was the best X3 yet. It was perhaps the first X3 that was so accomplished, you had to question whether spending more on the X5 was worth it. In production from the 2018 to 2024 model years, the G01 BMW X3 models featured handsome styling, a high-quality interior with BMW's improved iDrive setup, and an array of powerful yet efficient powertrains. A plug-in hybrid version of this X3 paired a four-cylinder turbo with an electric motor, and allowed for 18 miles of electric-only driving. At the other end of the scale, BMW really pushed the performance envelope of this X3. The M40i's six-cylinder engine produced 382 hp, and if that wasn't enough, a full-fat X3 M was introduced for the first time. The latter made up to 503 hp and was startlingly quick for a compact crossover. This BMW X3's model year changes were subtle, until the substantial facelift for 2022, which introduced much sleeker styling. There isn't much that the G01 did wrong, which is why BMW USA sold over 75,000 of them in 2021, the best performance across all BMW X3 generations. While the X3 has generally been one of BMW's least polarizing models, choosing evolution over revolution, the G45 is quite a departure. It sports a bold but less cohesive look, with criss-crossing lines in its upsized grille and a total rethink inside the cabin. For now, it's only available with two engines: A 2.0-liter turbo-four or a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo with 393 hp. AWD and an eight-speed automatic are standard. It's inside where the newest X3 takes a few missteps. Yes, it has a blazing-fast and bright Curved Display, but gone are the user-friendly physical controls in the old X3. Quality has taken a dive, too; instead of classy wood or aluminum inlays, BMW has relied too heavily on garish lighting to create a sense of occasion. When everything is switched off, the cabin is plain to look at. However, trading old-school luxury and usability for tech isn't unique to BMW - Mercedes and Audi have gone down a similar path. We expect the G45 BMW X3's redesign years to fix some of these issues, but that probably won't happen before 2027. Despite all that's changed, the G45 looks likely to continue being one of the most popular models in the BMW stable. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Tested: 2025 Mini Countryman EV Doesn't Give a Reason to Go Electric

Mini started selling electric versions of its small hatchbacks quite a while ago, but the latest Cooper Electric is in limbo due to global trade issues, as it's built in China. But that doesn't mean Mini is without an EV entirely. The larger Countryman SUV has entered the crowded electric-utility space with a new-for-2025 model that uses the same SE name that was previously applied to the Countryman's plug-in hybrid variant in its prior generation. The new Countryman SE ALL4 shares its modern-looking design with the third-gen gas model, and it's mechanically similar to the BMW iX1, an electric variant of Bimmer's smallest SUV that isn't sold in the U.S. We only get one version of the SE, and it's a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup with 308 horsepower. That puts it right in line with the gas-powered Countryman's JCW performance variant, which has 312 horsepower and all-wheel drive. The two are also priced similarly, with the EV starting at $46,375 and the JCW at $48,075. (The base 241-hp Countryman S gas model starts at $40,075.) View Exterior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver Of course, as is typical with EVs, the Countryman's 65-kWh battery pack means it's quite a bit heavier than its gas counterpart. The SE weighs in at 4606 pounds, versus 3792 for the Countryman JCW we tested. That means the electric version doesn't perform as well despite its similar power output. We got it to 60 mph in a respectable 4.8 seconds, while the gas model did it in 4.6. Within the Mini's competitive set of other electrics, the similarly priced Volvo EX30 is the speed demon, getting to 60 mph in a scant 3.3 seconds in our testing. HIGHS: Cute interior design, pleasant driving demeanor, reasonably priced compared with gas model. Though the Countryman SE feels nimble and quick for a small crossover, it doesn't give the impression of being an overtly sporting machine. The ride is firm, the steering is direct, and the powertrain is responsive, but it's a bit too big and heavy to change direction eagerly enough to live up to the promise of the sporty and boldly named Go Kart driving mode. Around the skidpad, our test car managed a so-so 0.85 g of grip, riding on 19-inch Continental ProContact GX all-season tires. The gas-powered JCW's more aggressive summer rubber helped it earn an 0.95-g result, and it also beat the SE's 70-mph stopping distance by a significant margin, at 158 feet to 171 feet. View Interior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver Mini's typical kitsch is on full display inside the Countryman SE, as its dashboard incorporates a mix of textiles, ambient lighting, and other flourishes to create a fun atmosphere. Those who like this sort of thing will get enjoyment out of details like the quirky air vents and the fabric strap replacing one of the traditional steering-wheel spokes. The circular central infotainment screen is nice to look at, though it doesn't quite use its full real estate effectively for smartphone mirroring. We also felt that some of the menu structures were too complicated, as you have to dive into various settings to adjust things like the regenerative braking level. A button would have been easier. LOWS: Limited driving range, doesn't accelerate as quickly as the JCW model, quirky styling isn't for everyone. With the regen level at its highest setting and the transmission in B mode, the Countryman SE is capable of one-pedal driving. We enjoyed driving in this mode in the city, and the gas pedal has a long enough travel to make it easy to modulate your speed. But the Countryman SE's other EV specs aren't so impressive. The EPA estimates a driving range of just over 200 miles on a charge, with the version on 18-inch wheels earning a rating of 212 miles and the version with 19-inch wheels rated at 204 miles. Our test car and its 19-inchers achieved a real-world 75-mph highway range of only 180 miles. View Interior Photos Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver Though that isn't too far off the EPA estimate, it's simply not very much range. Yes, the aforementioned Volvo EX30 fared even worse in this test, achieving just 160 miles, but the less expensive Hyundai Kona Electric managed 230 miles in this same test. At least the Mini's fast-charging capabilities are competitive, with a peak charging rate of 129 kilowatts in our fast-charging test and an average of 84 kilowatts overall. VERDICT: The electric Countryman doesn't give up much to its gas siblings, but it doesn't gain much either. The problem with the Countryman SE is that it simply doesn't offer any particular characteristics to entice buyers away from the gas models. It costs about the same as the JCW but doesn't perform as well, and its relatively small battery pack means it can't go far on a charge. If EV buyers are forced to make sacrifices like this, they should at least benefit from extra features, better acceleration, or increased versatility via a front cargo area. The Countryman SE doesn't have any of these upsides, and as a result it fails to make a compelling argument for itself. He has been part of the Car and Driver team since 2016 and now lives in New York City. Read full bio
