ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Donovan Dent and reserve CJ Noland both had 19 points in New Mexico's 87-65 victory over Colorado State on Wednesday.
Dent added six rebounds for the Lobos (19-4, 11-1 Mountain West Conference). Noland shot 7 for 7, including 3 for 3 from beyond the arc. Nelly Joseph shot 4 of 9 from the field and 10 for 13 from the line to finish with 18 points.
The Rams (14-8, 8-3) were led in scoring by Rashaan Mbemba, who finished with 17 points. Colorado State also got 15 points from Kyan Evans. Nique Clifford also put up nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and most of the starting lineup that returned for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles took a night off. The tush push is always in play. Without Hurts behind center, the Eagles used the contentious short-yardage play to success again, beating a potential ban in the offseason, then getting a helpful shove on quarterback Tanner McKee for a score to help Philadelphia beat the Cincinnati Bengals 34-27 on Thursday night in the preseason opener for both teams. The Eagles wasted no time breaking out the play that narrowly survived banishment to live on in the playbook. Against a Bengals team that played starters, including QB Joe Burrow and NFL receiving leader Ja'Marr Chase, the Eagles had the crowd buzzing when they assembled in the familiar formation on fourth-and-goal from the Bengals 1-yard-line on their opening drive of the game. The Eagles used their rugby-style scrum to nudge McKee into the end zone for the first — of an expected many, many more — tush push TD of the season. 'Live reps, we don't do a ton of them,' McKee said of the push. 'Just getting those types of snaps, technique, coaching points, that's a big thing in what we do.' The Eagles are bullish on McKee, a sixth-round pick out of Stanford in 2023, and he's firmly entrenched as Hurts' backup. The Eagles let McKee rip — he played into the second half and finished 20 of 25 for 252 yards and touchdown passes to Ainias Smith and Darius Cooper. Kyle McCord, a sixth-round pick out of Syracuse and raised a diehard Eagles fan, threw a pick-six in his debut in mop-up duty. McCord, from nearby Mount Laurel, New Jersey, led the FBS last season with 4,779 yards passing, a total that broke Deshaun Watson's Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record. Burrow got his work in and threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns that included a 38-yard score to Chase. 'We've still got a ways to go,' Burrow said. 'But it was a good start. It's just good to play football again. We got 15 reps tonight, so we're 15 reps better.' The Bengals had long odds to win the Super Bowl, per BETMGM Sportsbook. The betting favorite to win the Lombardi Trophy remained the Eagles. 'This was a team effort in the loss,' Bengals coach Zac Taylor, who then rattled off a lengthy list of mistakes. 'I like the fight in our guys. They came back at the end, that I appreciate. But there's a lot of things we've got to fix as a team." Hurts and Barkley, who topped 2,000 yards rushing last season, were among the scores of starters that coach Nick Sirianni rested. The Eagles' whirlwind offseason included a parade and a White House visit and the page will officially be turned when the championship banner will be raised at Lincoln Financial Field next month in the prime-time season opener. 'It's great to have Jalen on the headset,' Sirianni said. Better yet, when he's making plays. Brotherly love? Burrow completed a 9-yard pass on the opening drive to Brown and the halfback was pushed out of bounds by a familiar face, his twin brother and Eagles safety Sydney Brown. The brothers starred in college at Illinois and played against each other last season in an Eagles' win. 'It's a cool opportunity, it's unique,' Sydney Brown said. 'I haven't tackled him since I feel like I was 16. It's been a while.' The birthday boy Hurts turned 27 on Thursday and was gifted a night off. What to get the Super Bowl MVP who has everything? Hurts already has a Super Bowl ring after the Eagles' 40-22 thrashing over Kansas City and one other trip to the Super Bowl on his resume. He signed a contract in 2023 that guaranteed him at least $179.3 million over the life of the deal that expires after the 2028 season. Hurts had his helmet off and broke into a wide smile when he watched McKee break down the team before the game. Who needs two? There's one more preseason game at the Linc and one more chance to see the Eagles in Philly at preseason prices. Tickets in the 200-level Thursday night were going for about $30-$40 each on the secondary market; in the same ballpark for next week's second home game against Cleveland. Consider, tickets were priced at $38 each in the second level. Seem high? Ticket prices were listed as low as $630 and soared past $1,000 per ticket in the same section for the Sept. 4 season opener against Dallas. Georgia teenager Mason Howell wins US Amateur, youngest champion since 2009
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Georgia teenager Mason Howell capped a productive summer before his senior year of high school by winning the U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club on Sunday just two months after competing in his first U.S. Open. Howell, who turned 18 in June, raced out to a big lead over Tennessee teenager Jackson Herrington on the opening 18 holes and went on to win the 36-hole final 7 and 6 to surpass Tiger Woods and become the third youngest U.S. Amateur champion ever. Only Byeong Hun An, who won at age 17 in 2009, and Danny Lee, who won a month after his 18th birthday in 2008, were younger. 'It's all jumbled together,' Howell said of his emotions. 'It's been such a great week. To have my name next to these other names on this trophy is unbelievable. To be next to somebody named Tiger is an unreal feeling.' Howell won it with a par to halve the 30th hole, ending the most-lopsided final since Bryson DeChambeau also beat Derek Bard 7 and 6 in 2015. The win earned Howell invitations to the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open next year. He also got a spot in the Walker Cup matches down the coast at Cypress Point in September. 'I felt like I always had it," Howell said of his play this summer. "It's self-belief. I knew it was in me. I just needed to walk with some confidence and I think that would translate to good golf and staying positive. This was the first U.S. Amateur final featuring two teenagers since Matt Fitzpatrick bested Oliver Goss in 2013 and Howell showed the composure of a much more experienced golfer by repeatedly making clutch putts while Herrington made repeated mistakes. Howell won 11 holes, eight of them with pars. He also responded after all four holes he lost, winning the following hole each time. Howell burst onto the scene when he qualified for the U.S. Open this year with rounds of 63-63 from the Atlanta sectional. He failed to make the cut at Oakmont but used that experience this week at The Olympic Club. He was one of 17 players to advance from a 20-man playoff to make the match play portion of the tournament, where he won all six matches. 'Honestly, I have known how good he is for a long time,' said his father, Robert Howell. 'He's had a phenomenal breakout summer.' Howell won five of six holes on the front nine of the opening 18 holes — including an eagle at No. 7 — to take a four-hole lead. He increased the lead to five with a birdie on the par-5 16th hole as his steady putting helped keep Herrington at bay. 'That's one thing we really wanted to start off with today was get the lead through nine," Howell said. "We got off to such a good start. I wanted to keep my foot on the gas, but I didn't want to do anything dumb. I knew if I hit it to a lot of the center of the greens and two-putted that would be good enough." Herrington closed the first 18 with a birdie on the par-5 18th to get back within four. But he then bogeyed the first three holes after the lunch break to fall down by six and never really threatened the rest of the way. 'He played good, and I didn't play great,' Herrington said. 'It was unfortunate I was that way, but I learned a lot about myself.' Howell now gets ready for his senior year of high school — which started this past week — before he is set to start college at the University of Georgia in 2026. 'At the end of the day, I still have to go sit in a classroom for eight hours these coming months,' Howell said. 'Just got to soak this up and really enjoy this one with friends and family.' The 19-year-old Herrington is about to start his sophomore season in college at Tennessee. ___

Marcus Ingvartsen, Anders Dreyer both score late to rally San Diego to 2-1 victory over Earthquakes
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Marcus Ingvartsen scored late in the second half and then notched an assist on Anders Dreyer's winner three minutes later to rally Western Conference-leading expansion side San Diego FC to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday. Ingvartsen, who subbed in for Aníbal Godoy in the 64th minute, took a pass from Franco Negri in the 81st and scored for the second time in his seventh career appearance for San Diego (16-7-4). Negri entered late in the first half before earning his first assist in his 12th appearance. Negri had his only other assist in 11 appearances with Inter Miami last season. Ingvartsen and defender Christopher McVey set up Dreyer's 12th goal for the win. It was the first assist for Ingvartsen and the first in 102 career appearances for McVey. Neither team scored until Josef Martínez gave San Jose (8-11-8) the lead in the 77th minute when he scored unassisted for his 12th goal of the season and the 128th of his career. He needs five more to tie Jaime Moreno for fifth place all time. CJ dos Santos had four saves for San Diego in the first meeting between the clubs. Daniel De Sousa Britto's only save for the Earthquakes came in a scoreless first half. San Diego is now 4-0 against California clubs after already beating the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy twice and Los Angeles FC once. San Diego has won six straight matches on the road — extending its league record for an expansion team. ___
