Gujarat police teams dispatched to Bengal, Northeast for ID verification of suspected illegal immigrants
The Gujarat Police has dispatched teams to West Bengal and some north-eastern states to conduct a physical verification of suspected to illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, who were detained in the state since early Saturday, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
The police department is also faced with the task of making temporary arrangements for confinement of confirmed illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country as the two Joint Interrogation Centres (JICs) in Ahmedabad and Kutch — the detention facilities for apprehended foreigners — are filled to their capacity.
Senior officers confirmed that the police teams have been sent to West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya, which serve as transit points for illegal migration from Bangladesh to India. A senior official said that the teams have been sent for 'verification of documents' as some of the documents provided by the people, suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals, are carrying documents, which have faraway areas of West Bengal and the northeastern states as their addresses. The police suspect that those IDs could be 'fake' and might have been procured through a network facilitating the illegal immigration.
'The teams will conduct a physical verification of documents such as Aaadhar, voting cards, bank documents and other such ID proofs produced by them. Mobile phone data of the suspects, including details of their Bangladeshi contacts, and bank details are also being probed… we are also ascertaining whether their stay in Gujarat was facilitated by any agency for cheaper labour…'
Among the questions facing the agencies that have now detained over 1,500 people across the state, is the confinement of the confirmed illegal immigrants, until they are deported. A senior Gujarat police officer said, 'The two detention centres (JICs) at Ahmedabad and Kutch, which have a capacity of about 100 and 70, respectively, are already overcrowded… The respective city police will have to make temporary arrangements locally to confine the illegal immigrants until the deportation is complete.'
In Vadodara, Police Commissioner Narasimha Komar said that over 1300 suspected Bangladeshi nationals have been rounded up since Saturday — eight of them were confirmed as illegal immigrants. Komar also said that 41 others are suspected to be illegal immigrants, and a verification of their documents is underway.
Komar told The Indian Express, 'Since Saturday, we have identified a total of eight Bangladeshi nationals who had been residing illegally in Vadodara. A probe is underway. Meanwhile, the Special Branch, which deals with registration of foreign nationals, has begun the process of deportation of the confirmed illegal immigrants… The necessary correspondence will be made with the government to expedite the process…'
Komar said that the Vadodara city police already have five Bangladeshi illegal immigrants in its confinement since March last year, awaiting deportation. Komar said, 'Since the JICs are full, we will make temporary arrangements for the illegal immigrants. They are not under arrest during this period but under confinement at a regulated place… We have had five Bangladeshi nationals in confinement since March 2024 on the premises of the Special Operations Group in Vadodara. We are awaiting slots to be confirmed by the Border Security Force to execute the deportation of such immigrants.'
Komar said that while the regular process of deportation can be time-consuming, the current drive against illegal immigrants, being a 'special drive', would see an expedited process. 'We believe that the government will expedite the deportation process for those illegal immigrants, who have been found since the commencement of the drive (on Saturday)…' Komar said.
Till Sunday, the Gujarat police had detained close to 1,024 and rounded up close to 1,300 suspected Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara. While 890 were detained in Ahmedabad, 134 were held in Surat. In Vadodara and Rajkot, 1300 and 800 persons have been rounded up, respectively. Of the 890 people detained in Ahmedabad, 100 have been confirmed as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, while it has been confirmed that Rajkot had 10 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the city.

‘Prashasan se Parichay' : From understanding dairy models to key govt functioning, Haryana students of Sirsa experience learning beyond textbooks
Setting a model for the rest of the country, Sirsa district administration in Haryana is quietly transforming civic education with a pioneering initiative that brings governance closer to young citizens. Titled 'Prashasan se Parichay', this civic exposure programme is offering school and college students a rare, structured opportunity to experience government functioning first-hand — not through textbooks, but through direct engagement. Under the initiative launched in October 2024, five meritorious students currently in Classes 9 to 12 are invited from each school to understand the functioning of government offices in a two-day module. The programme has been designed in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasising experiential learning. The selection is based on their academic performance in Classes 8, 9, 10, and 11 during 2023–24. On Mondays, students observe the working of various government offices, while Thursdays are dedicated to field visits to industries and enterprises. 'It's not just an event — it's a looped, replicable model that places young learners at the heart of real government functioning,' said Lakshit Sareen, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sirsa, told The Indian Express. What sets the initiative apart is its immersive, hands-on approach. On Mondays, students observe key government functions — from Samadhan Shivirs handling public grievances to RTA and police departments explaining road safety and the FIR process. They learn about child protection mechanisms at the District Child Protection Office (DCPO), digitised service delivery through the District Citizen Resources Information Office (DCRIO), and grassroots governance at the Zila Parishad, Block Development Program Office. (BDPO), and Municipal Council. Sessions with the Additional Deputy Commissioner provide broader insights into the administrative framework. Thursdays connect students with the economic backbone of the region. They visit white shrimp farming units (Sirsa leads North India in this sector), Miyawaki forests developed by the Forest Department, the Vita milk plant illustrating cooperative dairy models, and procurement mandis that sustain the rural economy. These experiences provide a comprehensive understanding of how governance and development intersect on the ground. 'Exposure to real-world enterprises also helps them make informed choices about vocational subjects or future careers,' said officials from the Sirsa district administration. So far, 160 students have directly participated in the programme — 70 from seven government colleges, 70 from 14 Centre-run PM SHRI senior secondary schools, 19 from four private schools, and 9 toppers from Class 10 and 12, said Sareen. After completing a day module, each student delivers a speech in their school's morning assembly, addressing around 100 peers. They also submit reflective essays — with awards for the best entries — and proudly wear their 'Administration Ambassador' badges. Educators have responded enthusiastically. For many students, particularly first-generation learners, this has been their first meaningful interaction with public institutions. The programme fosters not just awareness, but also curiosity, confidence, and a deeper sense of civic identity, according to the feedback of students provided through essays. 'The core idea is to make governance real and inspiring for the youth. It's been heartening to see students return not just with knowledge, but with a sense of purpose,' said Sareen. At a time when civic disengagement among youth is a growing concern, Sirsa's Prashasan se Parichay offers a powerful counter-narrative — students don't just learn about democracy; they are living it. Amit Manhar, nodal officer of the programme, said that though the program has been designed for government schools and colleges private school students are also participating. 'We are getting overwhelming response from the students and their principals,' Manhar said. Tejasvi, a Class 11 humanities student from Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Nathusari Kalan, shared her thoughts: 'It was an enriching experience to be part of Prashasan se Parichay. We learned about solid waste management and how 120 tonnes of garbage is transported daily to the dump site. I also had the opportunity to interact with the District Rural Officer and understand how the official machinery functions.' Kritika, a Class 11 student from The Sirsa School, a private institution, echoed similar sentiments: 'My hesitation about visiting government offices disappeared after seeing how various departments work during our visit two weeks ago. It's important to gain practical knowledge beyond just reading theory. We interacted with the Sanitary Inspector and attended a Samadhan Shivir — a platform that addresses public grievances directly.' The programme is an initiative by the District Administration, Sirsa, conceptualized and led by Lakshit Sareen, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sirsa. Shantnu Sharma Deputy Commissioner, Sirsa is guiding the whole team, said Manhar.

Bangladeshi couple held for illegal stay in Erode
A Bangladeshi couple staying illegally in the city was arrested by the police on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off about foreign nationals allegedly residing without valid documents, a team from the Erode North police station conducted inquiries and traced the couple — Bablu Sardar (37) and his wife Ribiya Katun (37) — to Kamaraj Nagar in Veerappanchatiram. Investigations revealed that Paplu Sardar had reportedly obtained a fake Aadhaar card and was working as an assistant in a company in the SIPCOT industrial area in Perundurai. Neither he nor his wife possessed valid passports or visas. The couple was arrested, and a case was registered under Section 3(2)(e) read with Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946. They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody at Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai.

Major gun battle between Maoists, security forces underway at Chhattisgarh's Indravati National Park
A major encounter broke out on Thursday morning between security forces and Maoists at the Indravati National Park in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district. The ongoing encounter started after a joint team of security forces undertook an operation based on specific intelligence about the presence of senior Maoist cadres in the area. This comes nearly a fortnight after Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basava Raju, the general secretary of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), was gunned down in an encounter along with 27 others in the jungles of Abujhmad region in Narayanpur district on May 21. Indravati National Park has seen two other major encounters this year between Maoists and security forces. On February 9, two security forces personnel and 31 Maoists were killed in an encounter at the national park. Before that, on January 12, five Maoists, including two women, were killed in an encounter with security forces. Back in August 2023, sources in the security forces had told The Indian Express that Maoists were recruiting new cadres in the national park, Abujhmad, and the Kanker-Narayapur inter-district border near Maharashtra. The fresh recruits are also being trained in the national park, the sources had said, adding that they had been using drones to track security forces. Security forces have since been trying to free the national park area of Maoists. Also, they want to build a bridge over the Indravati river that would connect the two states and help boost economic activities. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set a deadline of March 2026 to eradicate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) from India. The security forces this year till date have 202 Maoists, of which 185 were in Bastar region alone — Bijapur is a part of Bastar region. This year has also seen the death of 17 security personnel in attacks by Maoists.
