Gujarat police teams dispatched to Bengal, Northeast for ID verification of suspected illegal immigrants
The police department is also faced with the task of making temporary arrangements for confinement of confirmed illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country as the two Joint Interrogation Centres (JICs) in Ahmedabad and Kutch — the detention facilities for apprehended foreigners — are filled to their capacity.
Senior officers confirmed that the police teams have been sent to West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya, which serve as transit points for illegal migration from Bangladesh to India. A senior official said that the teams have been sent for 'verification of documents' as some of the documents provided by the people, suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals, are carrying documents, which have faraway areas of West Bengal and the northeastern states as their addresses. The police suspect that those IDs could be 'fake' and might have been procured through a network facilitating the illegal immigration.
'The teams will conduct a physical verification of documents such as Aaadhar, voting cards, bank documents and other such ID proofs produced by them. Mobile phone data of the suspects, including details of their Bangladeshi contacts, and bank details are also being probed… we are also ascertaining whether their stay in Gujarat was facilitated by any agency for cheaper labour…'
Among the questions facing the agencies that have now detained over 1,500 people across the state, is the confinement of the confirmed illegal immigrants, until they are deported. A senior Gujarat police officer said, 'The two detention centres (JICs) at Ahmedabad and Kutch, which have a capacity of about 100 and 70, respectively, are already overcrowded… The respective city police will have to make temporary arrangements locally to confine the illegal immigrants until the deportation is complete.'
In Vadodara, Police Commissioner Narasimha Komar said that over 1300 suspected Bangladeshi nationals have been rounded up since Saturday — eight of them were confirmed as illegal immigrants. Komar also said that 41 others are suspected to be illegal immigrants, and a verification of their documents is underway.
Komar told The Indian Express, 'Since Saturday, we have identified a total of eight Bangladeshi nationals who had been residing illegally in Vadodara. A probe is underway. Meanwhile, the Special Branch, which deals with registration of foreign nationals, has begun the process of deportation of the confirmed illegal immigrants… The necessary correspondence will be made with the government to expedite the process…'
Komar said that the Vadodara city police already have five Bangladeshi illegal immigrants in its confinement since March last year, awaiting deportation. Komar said, 'Since the JICs are full, we will make temporary arrangements for the illegal immigrants. They are not under arrest during this period but under confinement at a regulated place… We have had five Bangladeshi nationals in confinement since March 2024 on the premises of the Special Operations Group in Vadodara. We are awaiting slots to be confirmed by the Border Security Force to execute the deportation of such immigrants.'
Komar said that while the regular process of deportation can be time-consuming, the current drive against illegal immigrants, being a 'special drive', would see an expedited process. 'We believe that the government will expedite the deportation process for those illegal immigrants, who have been found since the commencement of the drive (on Saturday)…' Komar said.
Till Sunday, the Gujarat police had detained close to 1,024 and rounded up close to 1,300 suspected Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara. While 890 were detained in Ahmedabad, 134 were held in Surat. In Vadodara and Rajkot, 1300 and 800 persons have been rounded up, respectively. Of the 890 people detained in Ahmedabad, 100 have been confirmed as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, while it has been confirmed that Rajkot had 10 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the city.

In a breakthrough, the Deolapar police in Maharashtra's Nagpur district have successfully used artificial intelligence-based analysis to identify the vehicle involved in a fatal accident after which the victim's body was carried on a motorcycle by her husband. Gyarasi Amit Yadav, 30, died when an unidentified vehicle hit the motorcycle she was riding pillion on with her husband Amit Bhura Yadav, a resident of Lonara at Gumti in Nagpur district, in the Morfata Dargah area on August 10. A video of Amit carrying his wife's body on his motorcycle after the accident was widely shared on social media platforms. Based on Amit's complaint, the police registered a case on August 11 on charges of rash driving and causing death by negligence under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 281 () and 106(1) along with Motor Vehicles Act sections 184 and 134(b). With no initial leads on the accused or the vehicle, investigators turned to the AI-powered system MARVEL (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement) under the guidance of Harssh A Poddar, Superintendent of Police, Nagpur Rural, the police said. The system analysed CCTV footage and traced the vehicle involved—a red Tata truck (UP 14 MT 2190). 'We used AI algorithms developed at MARVEL to analyse four hours of footage from three toll nakas. The first algorithm sieved out all the red trucks and the second algorithm did a speed-based calculation of these trucks to identify which truck could be involved. On the basis of the AI alert generated, we arrested the accused yesterday from 700 km away near Kanpur,' Harssh A Poddar told The Indian Express. On August 16, police teams tracked down and arrested the driver of the truck, Satyapal Rajendra, 28, a resident of Nagla Kharik village in Mahoi in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. They also seized the truck.

BITS Pilani student found dead in hostel, institute says he ‘died in sleep': Report
A 20-year-old student from BITS Pilani's Goa campus was found dead in his hostel room on Saturday. The institute stated the death was 'natural' and that he had 'passed away in his sleep.' The incident was reported around 11.30 am, after which a team from Verna police station arrived on campus. 'The student was found lying on his bed in a sideward sleeping position. The previous night, he played table tennis on the campus and later returned to his room. The room was locked from the inside. When he did not answer the door on Saturday, the hostel authorities were informed. The cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem on Sunday,' a police officer was quoted as saying by publication. In a statement, the institute confirmed that the deceased was a third-year dual degree student of BE Computer Science and MSc Economics, with a CGPA close to 9. 'The BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa Campus community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its students today. He was found in an unresponsive state on his bed when his room was opened at around 11am (on August16), and the medical team confirmed that he had passed away in his sleep. The police were informed and have initiated the required procedures to ascertain the cause of death, and we are fully cooperating,' the institute's public relations officer Arjun Halarnkar was quoted as saying by The Times of India. 'His father called his friends to check about his son's whereabouts, wherein they tried a lot to open the door of his hostel block which was locked from inside. They later checked from the ventilator and found the student lying on the bed,' Halarnkar added. 4th death case in 9 months This marks the fourth student death reported at the BITS Pilani Goa campus in the past nine months. The previous three cases were suicides. The campus drew attention in May when the institute initiated an internal inquiry following three suicides reported since December 2024. The first case involved a 21-year-old second-year BE Computer Science and MSc Chemistry student from Uttar Pradesh, who died by suicide in December 2024. The second incident occurred in March 2025 and concerned a 20-year-old third-year dual degree student. The third case, reported in May 2025, involved a 20-year-old from Lucknow, a second-year dual degree student in MSc Chemistry and BE Electrical and Instrumentation, according to The TOI. In response, the institute announced a series of measures aimed at easing academic pressure and improving student well-being. These included overhauling the curriculum, expanding counselling services with professional psychologists, launching a 24×7 helpline, organising sessions with faculty to address student concerns, and introducing weekly psychiatrist consultations. The authorities also assured that 'students in distress were given flexibility to take examinations at a later time' and said new courses on mental and physical wellness and stress management would be part of the revised curriculum.
