Ohtani lines into triple play, Angels rally to beat Dodgers 7-6 in extra innings
The defending World Series champion Dodgers fell into a first-place tie with San Diego atop the NL West after their third consecutive loss.
Ohtani put the Dodgers up 6-5 when he homered in his fourth consecutive game, crushing a cutter from Kenley Jansen for his NL-leading 43rd.
He also rebounded smartly after being involved in the eighth triple play in Angels history. Shortstop Zach Neto caught Ohtani's liner up the middle, stepped on second to get Miguel Rojas and threw to first, where Nolan Schanuel tagged out Dalton Rushing.
The Angels rallied in a drama-filled ninth. Luis Rengifo singled and scored on Schanuel's sacrifice fly before Ben Casparius (7-5) struck out Taylor Ward with the bases loaded.
After Connor Brogdon (3-1) pitched a clean 10th for the Angels, Christian Moore moved Ward to third with a bunt single. Adell ended it with a high chopper that got over the Dodgers' drawn-in infield.
Rushing hit his second homer for the Dodgers, who have lost all five meetings with the Angels this season. They're also sharing the NL West lead for the first time since June 13 after San Diego won its fourth straight at San Francisco.
Ward hit his 28th homer and drove in two runs for the Angels.
Ohtani's blast had a 114.8-mph exit velocity. He moved past Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber for the NL homers lead after hitting five in six games. Ohtani also has an 11-game hitting streak.
Jansen hadn't allowed an earned run in 21 consecutive appearances, the longest streak of his stellar career.
Ohtani (0-0, 2.37 ERA) pitches at Angel Stadium on Wednesday, facing Kyle Hendricks (6-8, 4.63).

Gabby Williams added 11 points. Ogwumike was 7 of 11 from the field in the first half for 16 points, while the rest of her teammates combined for 23 points. Lowe, Caminero hit 2-run homers in the Rays' 8-2 victory over the Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit two-run home runs, Drew Rasmussen threw six innings and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Athletics 8-2 on Wednesday night. Lowe's second-inning home run off J.T. Ginn (2-5) — his 24th of the season — made it 6-0. Caminero homered in the ninth. Rasmussen (10-5) reached double-digit wins for the second time in his career, but saw his AL-best scoreless streak end at 17 1/3 innings when Lawrence Butler hit a two-run homer in the third. It was the first extra-base hit allowed by Rasmussen in his last four starts. Caminero, Josh Lowe, and Jake Mangum each had RBIs in the top of the first, and Mangum scored on a throwing error. Ginn allowed six hits and six runs — five earned — in two innings. Key moment Lowe's two-run homer to left center extended the Rays' lead. Yankees 1B Paul Goldschmidt has a right knee sprain and may go on IL
NEW YORK (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt has a low-grade right knee sprain and the New York Yankees may place the veteran first baseman on the injured list ahead of his return to St. Louis this weekend. The Yankees will evaluate Goldschmidt during their day off and will decide before Friday's game against the Cardinals if he will be placed on the IL. 'He's dealing with something so we'll see if it's an IL situation,' manager Aaron Boone said after Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Minnesota. 'He was pretty sore last night and this morning. Feels like he's doing quite a bit better right now so we'll see.' Goldschmidt was injured chasing down a foul pop by Byron Buxton in the third inning of Tuesday's 9-1 victory. Goldschmidt overran the ball along the dirt track near the Yankee dugout and slipped before making the catch on the grass while slightly falling down. 'When I kind of overran it and dove back, hit my knee on the ground I guess,' Goldschmidt said. 'I felt that it was sore yesterday but obviously was able to play through it.' Goldschmidt stayed in Tuesday's game and hit a double in the seventh before being lifted with the Yankees holding an eight-run lead. 'As I was going to going back to my position, I was like 'that kind of hurt,' but stuff like that happens,' Goldschmidt said. 'So just felt like I could continue to play, which I did and it was fine.' Goldschmidt, who is hitting .404 off left-handed pitching this year, did not start Wednesday and did not pinch hit when Austin Wells batted and struck out against left-handed reliever Kody Funderburk in the seventh.
