Oman Crown Prince ties the knot in a royal ceremony

Gulf News26-04-2025
Dubai: Crown Prince Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said of Oman, the eldest son of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, celebrated his marriage last Thursday in a private ceremony at Al Alam Palace in Muscat, attended by members of the royal family.
Images of the event, showing Crown Prince Sayyid Theyazin with Sultan Haitham and Her Highness Ahad bint Abdullah, were circulated on royal news platforms shortly after the ceremony.
The Crown Prince, who currently serves as Oman's Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth, holds the distinction of being the first to bear the title of Crown Prince in the country's modern history. The title was introduced following a 2021 amendment to Oman's Basic Law.
His bride, Alya bint Mohammed bin Hilal Al Busaidiyah, belongs to one of Oman's prominent families. Her uncle, Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, serves as the governor of Muscat.
The marriage follows a public announcement of the Crown Prince's engagement earlier this year, made by his aunt, Ma'ani Al Busaidiyah, via a brief social media post in January 2025. At the time, no further details about the bride were disclosed.
Crown Prince Theyazin was previously married to his cousin, Mayan bint Shihab Al Said, though that marriage ended in early 2022 without an official statement regarding the separation.
Educated in the United Kingdom, Theyazin earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in history from the University of Oxford. He later graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in July 2022, one of Britain's most prestigious military institutions.
The Crown Prince began his career at Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2013 and later served as Second Secretary at the Omani Embassy in London. In August 2020, he was appointed Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth.

Photos: Who is Sen Genshitsu, late Japanese tea master Sheikh Mohamed tweeted about?

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Thursday, August 14 expressed his condolences over the passing of Dr Sen Genshitsu. In his message on X, Sheikh Mohamed said that the tea master was a "steadfast advocate of peace through education and cross-cultural dialogue." "By sharing his message with others in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, Dr Sen remained an important voice in the pursuit of harmony among humankind," said the President. "May he rest in peace". Grand tea master Genshitsu passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 102. He was a tea master in his youth trained as a kamikaze pilot, but the war ended before he needed to carry out the suicide mission. He then travelled around the world, making cups of matcha for leaders and spreading his message of peace. Sen used ancient "Urasenke" tea tradition rituals to spotlight his anti-war messages, sharing his motto of "peacefulness through a bowl of tea". "A bowl of tea makes spirits very peaceful. When everyone is peaceful, there will be no war," he is quoted as saying. He was an ordained Zen monk, and became the 15th-generation grand master of the Urasenke school in 1964 following the death of his father who had previously headed the tradition. Even after he turned 102 in April, he held more than 100 cultural and government advisory positions and gave speeches, according to Japanese media reports. History with Sheikh Mohamed In 2008, Sen hosted a traditional tea ceremony in Abu Dhabi, and in the following year, he presented Ryoku-Sui-An, a Japanese tea house in the Capital, to Sheikh Mohamed, who was then the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. According to the Urasenke Tankokai Abu Dhabi Association, the tea house was "built in the Emirates Palace as a symbol of friendship and goodwill." Sheikh Mohamed also picked up a brush and did calligraphy, writing the name of the tea house and signing in Arabic. In photos taken at the time, the UAE President can be seen carefully making matcha and sharing the drink with Sen.

Jordan: Cabinet approves tax exemptions for JFA, incentives for green hydrogen projects

AMMAN – The Cabinet has decided to exempt the Jordan Football Association (JFA) from sales tax on its revenues generated from sponsorship and marketing contracts, television broadcasting rights, and ticket sales. The exemptions were approved during a session on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, according to a Prime Ministry statement. The decision follows prime minister's visit to the association in July and comes in recognition of the national team's recent historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the statement said. During his visit to JFA, Hassan announced that the government would double the association's budget starting next year to help it continue its achievements. He also said at the time that the government will support the expansion of youth football training centres across the Kingdom's governorates and make use of the infrastructure of youth centres to develop training programmes for football and other sports. The Cabinet also approved classifying donations to the JFA as tax-deductible and exempted individuals and entities contracted by the association from paying work permit fees, the statement said. The Cabinet also endorsed a set of investment incentives for green hydrogen projects located outside the Aqaba Special Economic Zone, as recommended by the Ministry of Investment. The new incentives include reducing income tax to 5 per cent, plus a 1 per cent national contribution, and full exemption from customs duties, import fees, and other taxes on all fixed assets and equipment, whether sourced locally or imported by project owners or contractors. The incentives also include exempting projects, companies, and contractors, main and sub, from general sales tax and any other taxes, according to the statement. The statement said that the incentives are expected to attract high-value investments, create both direct and indirect jobs, and advance Jordan's position as a regional hub for clean energy and green technologies, such as green ammonia production. The Cabinet also approved the financing agreement and memorandum of understanding related to the financial assistance provided to Jordan by the European Union, amounting to €500 million. This is part of a €3 billion financial aid package announced by the EU for Jordan earlier this year for the period 2025–2027, within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Jordan and the EU, which was signed by His Majesty King Abdullah at the end of January. The aid package includes €640 million in grants, €1.4 billion in investments, and around €1 billion allocated for macroeconomic support, in recognition of the Kingdom's role and strategic partnership with the EU, the statement said. The Cabinet also approved the 2025 bylaw for the Scientific Research and Innovation Support Fund. The bylaw, the statement said, aims to provide a suitable environment for scientific research through research centres and to regulate the financial, administrative, and technical aspects related to the fund. © Copyright The Jordan Times. India to bid for Commonwealth Games as part of Olympic push

India says it will bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, seen as part of a wider push by the cricket-mad nation to host the 2036 Olympics. "Our preparations will go ahead," Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha said after a meeting on Wednesday, according to local media. The capital New Delhi -- which hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games, an event marked by construction delays, substandard infrastructure and accusations of corruption -- is being considered as host city. Bhubaneswar in the eastern state of Odisha is another option. But Indian media are tipping Ahmedabad, the key city in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat. The city is home to a 130,000-seater arena, the world's biggest cricket stadium, named after Modi. It staged the 2023 Cricket World Cup final. India last year submitted a formal letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee to host the 2036 Games. India has staged World Cups for cricket and the Asian Games twice, and will co-host the Women's World Cup cricket in September. Nigeria and at least two other nations have reportedly expressed interest in hosting the Commonwealth Games, which struggled to find a replacement host for 2026 after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew citing costs. Glasgow stepped in and will stage a slimmed-down version. Following IOA approval, India has until the end of August to submit a formal bid. The decision will be made in November in Glasgow. India said that if it wins the bid, the Commonwealth Games would be a "full-fledged" event. "We will have all the sports we are good at and have a chance of winning maximum medals," said IOA executive council member Rohit Rajpal, according to the Times of India newspaper. That would include tag-type sports such as kabaddi and kho kho, which India is pushing to be included in the Olympics. Despite its 1.4 billion people India's record at the Olympics is poor for a country of its size, winning only 10 gold medals in its history.
