CM Pushkar Singh Dhami talks about harmful impact of drug use not just on the individuals, but family and state as well
Uttarakhand [India], June 26 (ANI): As the world celebrates the International anti-drug day today, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami reminded the harms of drug consumption and said that drug addiction not only affects the mental and physical condition of a person, but also hinders the progress of the families, society and the state.
The Chief Minister shared his commitment to making Uttarakhand drug-free and further added that efforts are being made to make Uttarakhand drug-free, and to ensure success, the participation of all is very important. On the occasion of International Anti-Drug Day, he urged all to spread awareness in society about the harmful effects of drug addiction.
June 26, observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is a United Nations International Day. This day aims to spread awareness regarding the harmful effects of drug use and to fight against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. This day has been observed since 1989. June 26 was chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu's (Chinese political philosopher and politician) dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, ending on June 25, 1839, just before the First Opium War in China.
Every year, a theme is chosen, and this year's theme is 'The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention.'
Earlier, CM Dhami directed the officers of the Indian Administrative Service to adopt the villages where they started their service to accelerate the development of the state's remote villages.
Under the scheme, the officers have started working for the development of the adopted villages. Many officers have closely understood the lives of the villagers and their problems by staying overnight in the villages. After the officers make the action plan, the state government will run a campaign for the development of villages.
CM Dhami had expected the officers of the Indian Administrative Service with grade-pay of Rs 8700 or more to adopt the work area of their first appointment. On this basis, 40 senior IAS officers of the state have adopted their first place of appointment.
On May 20, 2025, an order to this effect was also issued by Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan. (ANI)

College students take out a rally against substance abuse
Over 300 students and faculty of colleges in the city participated in a special programme to observe International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking organised by the Department of Psychiatry, K.A.P.V. MGMGH medical superintendent Udhaya Aruna urged the students to stay alert for behavioural changes among their peers and advised them to seek medical attention at the earliest. A. Adopted comprehensive strategies to eliminate drug menace, says Tripura CM
Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Thursday that the state government has taken a comprehensive approach to eradicate the drug menace from the state. In his message on the occasion of 'International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking', the Chief Minister said that ever since the adoption of the 'Nasha Mukt Tripura' mission in 2018, a total of 3,307 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985 had been registered. During the past seven years, 5,800 offenders were arrested along with seizure of more than 3.06 lakhs kg dry ganja (marijuana), 13.40 lakhs of codeine based cough syrup bottles, 99.41 lakhs habit-forming tablets, more than 48 kg of heroin, CM Saha said. He said that, in addition, more than 8.69 crores of ganja seedlings/plants were destroyed. Properties, including vehicles of drug traffickers worth Rs 7 crore, have also been attached to deprive the drug criminals of enjoying the proceeds of crime. As a part of the 'Nasha Mukt Tripura' campaign, state Police in coordination with other central agencies actively enforce anti-narcotic laws, the Chief Minister said. The Union Government has also launched a 15-day "Drug Free India" and "Nasha Mukt Bharat Pakhwada" from June 12 to June 26. CM Saha, who also holds the state Health and Family Welfare and Home portfolios, said that in the fight against illicit drug trade, Tripura Police have strengthened its intelligence network, law enforcement mechanism and involved citizens, students and civil society for a comprehensive approach to eradicate the drug menace from the state. He said that the state government has undertaken alternative sources of livelihood programmes in the areas where cannabis (ganja) cultivation is rampant. Forest, agriculture, horticulture and animal resources development departments have been involved to wean away people involved in illegal ganja cultivation towards a normal livelihood, the Chief Minister said. While addressing an event against drug abuse on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said that the Union Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Ministry has already sanctioned Rs 198 crore for setting up a special drug de-addiction centre at the state's Sepahijala district in Bishramganj. The state government has already decided to set up drug de-addiction centres in all eight districts of the state, and Rs 20 crore would be spent on each centre. Tripura Director General of Police, Anurag, while addressing the event, said that last year, various drugs, including highly addictive methamphetamine tablets and ganja (marijuana) worth Rs 800 crore, were seized and destroyed in Tripura. He said that various drugs worth Rs 102 crore were seized during the first six months of the current year, against Rs 135 crore last year.

Six million donkeys slaughtered for Chinese medicine: Charity
Almost six million donkeys are slaughtered annually for Chinese medicine, with severe knock-on effects for African villagers who rely on the animals, a UK-based charity said on Thursday. It is driven by an increase in China's production of ejiao -- a product marketed as a health supplement that uses collagen from donkey skins -- which is a $6.8-billion industry, according to China-based research firm Qianzhan. China, whose donkey population has plummeted from 11 million in 1992 to 1.5 million in 2023, has turned to Africa to meet its demand. With donkey populations falling, the African Union issued a 15-year moratorium on donkey slaughter last year. UK-based charity The Donkey Sanctuary said "the ejiao industry drives a massive global trade in donkey skins, much of it illegal". It said around 5.9 million donkeys were killed worldwide last year. The ejiao trade is expected to require at least 6.8 million donkey skins by 2027. The rising value of donkeys means they have increasingly become targets for criminals. "Traders exploit vulnerable people using large and sophisticated networks of agents to pressure donkey owners into selling their animals," the charity said. "Illegal networks operate across the continent, often without consequence, stealing and slaughtering donkeys in the night," it added. "Donkeys die in often unregulated, inhumane, and unsanitary conditions, and large numbers perish on their way to slaughterhouses," it continued. The impact on humans is particularly felt by women and children, who rely on donkeys for farming activities such as ploughing and for carrying goods to market. The criminal operations also generated health risks, The Donkey Sanctuary said. "The transportation of untreated skins and improper disposal of donkey carcasses risk triggering the spread of infectious diseases and damaging local ecosystems."
