Dakshina Kannada Muslim Congress leaders vent ire at state government; plan to resign en masse

MANGALURU: Muslim leaders of the Congress party from Dakshina Kannada district have decided to resign en masse to their posts over the state government's alleged failure to curb communal murders in the Dakshina Kannada district.
Shahul Hameed, the minority wing president of DK District Congress Committee, told TNIE that they will hold a meeting at Shadi Mahal in Bolar on Thursday at 2.30 pm before putting down their papers. He said office-bearers from booth level to KPCC belonging to the Muslim community will put down the papers.
He blamed police department's complete failure to have led to the murder of Abdul Rahiman. 'There was no action against inflammatory speeches and those forced people after giving a call for bundh. If we are not able to provide justice to the people, then what is the use of us being in these positions. We are pained and helpless,' he said.

August 12, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Punjab poll decision

The government will take a political decision some time this week on the holding of elections in Punjab and whether this should be done by the end of September before the expiry of President's Rule in the state on October 5 or in early December. Indications so far are for an early poll. In the Akali Dal, a section led by Balwant Singh is in favour of an early poll while two stalwarts Parkash Singh Badal and G S Tohra want it to be delayed for some time. In the Congress (I) at the high command level, opinion is still divided, too. Hope in Assam While Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi arrived in Guwahati for the first time since he took office, a five-member joint delegation of AASU-AAGSP reached Delhi to participate in the crucial round of talks to resolve the foreign nationals problem in the state. Though the PM is in the city for the centenary celebrations of the Congress (I), the speculation is that he is going to announce a package of programmes for faster development of the state. The agitation leaders have not given a bandh call so far. Strife in Durban A peace rally attended by a handful of Indians and thousands of chanting Zulus with spears, shields and guns broke up in chaos as racial strife continued to rage in this township north of Durban. At least 65 have died in a week of bloodshed and anarchy in which Indians have been driven from their homes and rival Blackpolitical groups have dashed. Hospital officials said the death toll had risen by another 10 overnight but police said the townships around Durban were relatively calm. Union Carbide leak At least 100 people were injured when toxic fumes from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in West Virginia leaked into the atmosphere, local officials said. The officials said the fumes contained the gas methyl isocyanate (MIC), which killed more than 2,500 people in Bhopal. Kent Carper, director of emergency services at nearby Charleston said eight workers inside the plant had been the hardest hit.

Polls to local bodies, Jubilee Hills bypolls: CM devises strategy, PAC meet on Aug 16

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has devised a strategy for steering the Congress to victory in the upcoming elections to local bodies and by-elections to the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency. As part of the party strategy, the state government will fill all Director posts in the state corporations and other nominated posts in the districts expeditiously. During a one-on-one meeting with Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Mahesh Kumar Goud for nearly two hours at his residence here, the Chief Minister discussed the challenges facing the ruling party in its resolve to win the polls to local bodies and the Jubilee Hills by-elections. Revanth Reddy has decided to hold TPCC's Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting on August 16 or 17 to finalise the filling of nominated posts and assess the party's preparedness for the elections to local bodies. The Chief Minister instructed the TPCC president to shortlist the names of prospective candidates for filling Director posts in consultation with the Ministers and MLAs to avoid political differences. Second-rung leaders in the districts would be given priority while finalising the names for the Director posts in all corporations. The recent dharna demanding the Centre to give approval to pending BC quota bills and its impact on the state and national politics was also discussed at the meeting. The PAC will take a call on whether to go for elections by implementing 42 per cent quota. Party leaders said that the Chief Minister enquired from the TPCC president the response to the Janahita Padayatra conducted by state Congress incharge Meenakshi Natarajan in the districts. 'The outcome of the padayatra would be crucial for the Congress in the upcoming elections to local bodies', leaders said. A plan of action would be devised for aggressive campaign on the government's achievements as well as the implementation of welfare schemes and developmental programmes. All the Ministers have already been asked to come out with proposals for campaign in their respective departments. The Chief Minister also reviewed the Congress party's readiness to fight the Jubilee Hills by-elections and the changing political equations in the Assembly segment. Party leaders said that the Congress will finalise the candidate only after receiving survey reports.

'Vote chori' row: Dismissed Karnataka minister K Rajanna may be expelled from Congress; high command okays action amid internal turmoil

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah dismissed Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna following Congress high command's directive, triggered by Rajanna's public disagreement with Rahul Gandhi's vote theft allegations. BENGALURU: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah Monday removed cooperation minister KN Rajanna from the cabinet following a directive from the Congress high command, two days after the minister publicly ridiculed Rahul Gandhi's allegations on vote theft. The resignation was not without a touch of drama as Rajanna, a staunch supporter of Siddaramaiah, offered to resign and went to the chief minister's office on Monday. However, the high command insisted that Siddaramaiah must formally dismiss him as a disciplinary measure. Acting on the party's instructions, Siddaramaiah sent a recommendation to the governor, who accepted the removal notifying Rajanna's ouster from the ministry Monday afternoon. Next, Rajanna may be expelled from the party in a strong message to dissenters. On Saturday, Rajanna publicly disputed Rahul's attempt to blame EC and the BJP-led central govt for irregularities in the electoral rolls, particularly in the Mahadevapura segment of Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency. Row echoes in assembly One should remember voter lists were revised when our own govt was at the helm. Why did our party turn a blind eye then? It is true there are irregularities, but it is insulting to us that it happened right under our nose,' Rajanna said. On Aug 8, Rahul led a protest in Bengaluru, doubling down on his charge that EC colluded with BJP to allow over one lakh bogus votes in Mahadevapura, which helped BJP win Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat last year. Rajanna pointed out that objections to draft electoral rolls were invited soon after they were prepared. 'What were we doing then? Shouldn't we have checked the draft electoral rolls after they were published? We should've filed objections. Having been quiet then, we're raising this now,' he said. The controversy spilled into the assembly Monday afternoon. BJP's R Ashoka said, 'Rajanna represents ST (Valmiki). Congress has made him the scapegoat like it sacrificed another ST minister B Nagendra.' Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
