Saturday Lotto receiving $1 million prize boost

Perth Now19-05-2025
To celebrate the 45-year run of Saturday Lotto, players have the chance to strike gold with an extra $1 million in prize money for the weekend draw.
The division one prize pool will increase from an estimated $5 million to an estimated $6 million, beginning with the first draw this Saturday, May 24.
Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said the introduction of Saturday Lotto was an exciting time for the State back in 1979.
'Prior to 1979, Lotto games ran like raffles, so when Saturday Lotto came along, it was incredibly exciting for WA players,' he said.
'The first Saturday Lotto draw offered West Aussie's the chance to win a $35,000 division one prize.
'At this time Perth's median house price was around $25,000, so $35,000 was a life-changing offering for WA players.'
What they didn't anticipate at the time was just how popular Saturday Lotto would become in Western Australia, with three times the predicted 45,000 tickets sold for the first draw and retailers were selling out of tickets just hours after opening their doors.
The big initial draw for Saturdays, which was State-based at the time, saw two tickets from WA match the winning six numbers, splitting the division one $35,000 prize between a pair of lucky punters.
Margaret Hambley, owner of EE Hambley in Queens Park, said the store that's been in her family for 78 years has sold Lotto tickets longer then she has worked there.
'I'll always remember (in 1979) spending Fridays filling the old Hugan terminals with tickets and delivering it to Lotterywest HQ each week,' she said.
'There were plenty of Saturday Lotto Tickets in there each time and it is still much loved among players today. Vintage photos from EE Hambley back when Saturday Lotto first began. Credit: Lotterywest
'Saturday Lotto is the go-to game for most of my regular players, they always favour it over other games.
'Saturday Lotto creates the most division one winners in WA each year and has been around so long that it has a special place in people's heart.'
Since its inception, Saturday Lotto has delivered the most division one wins in WA every year, as well as helping raise nearly $1 billion over the past decade through its grants program for the WA community.

Lotto winners in Banksia Grove, in Perth's north, celebrate Division One prize with a Chinese takeaway

What would you do with a Lotto win? Pay off the mortgage? Buy a new car? Perhaps a holiday of a lifetime (first class, of course). What about a seafood omelette and extra spring rolls? A couple from Perth's northern suburbs found a humble way to celebrate their $1.4 million Lotto windfall, heading straight to the local Chinese takeaway for a few indulgences. The Banksia Grove paid won the Division One prize in a Saturday Lotto draw after buying themselves a SlikPik 18 ticket. But they didn't immediately learn of their win. The penny dropped when they spotted a post on a community social media page about a winning ticket sold at Banksia Grove News and they quickly confirmed they had the winning numbers. After collecting their winnings, the couple admitted they were 'not flashy people' and wanted a simple celebration. 'I think we'll treat ourselves to a seafood omelette at our local Chinese tonight,' the couple said after collecting their cash. 'And maybe some extra spring rolls. We're not flashy people. It's all about enjoying the little things in life.' But they also plan to splash out a little, taking some time off work to travel Australia in their caravan. 'Money shouldn't change you, but this will absolutely take the pressure off,' the winner said. 'We'd love to fly to Melbourne for the AFL Grand Final. We've never been before and now we can go.' In Perth's south, a Lotto winner has yet to claim their prize from the draw on August 2. The winning ticket was sold at The Lucky Charm Rockingham. The numbers were 24, 40, 43, 21, 45, 1 and the supplementary numbers were 16 and 9.

Four lucky players have each pocketed more than $1.6 million in the Saturday Gold Lotto draw, with two winning tickets sold in southeast Queensland. A Wavell Heights woman has described her $1.67 million win as a 'ticket to freedom,' declaring her future transformed after securing one of the four division one prizes in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 4597. 'I'm trying to just not be too excited … just in case,' she laughed when speaking about her life-changing win,' she said. 'I checked the ticket at the newsagent and they looked at it like, 'we think you've won a fair bit of money'. 'So, I came home and checked the ticket online. I thought, 'Oh! This is exciting!'' 'I always play Saturday Gold Lotto and I won $400 recently. I thought that was the best thing ever, but this is even better. A Warwick mum's last-minute Lotto ticket wins $1.6 million, turning a near miss into a life-changing moment. NewsWire/ Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia She said she will be able to pay off her mortgage with the money. 'When I see the home loan disappear completely, I will be partying. It will be like I'm working for myself after that,' she said. Her winning entry was purchased at Nextra Aspley Village, Robinson Rd Marketplace, Aspley. Nextra Aspley Village owner Dan Beutel welcomed the news and said the win was great for the region. 'As we've been here for 23 years, we know many of our customers personally and we know they'll be very happy for us and the lucky winner,' he said. 'This is our fourth division one win during our time. The last time we sold a division one winning entry was in November 2023, so it's fantastic to see another one. It's great news for Aspley and we'll be letting everyone know. 'Congratulations to our winner and may the win bring joy to them and their family.' Three of the four winners are from Queensland. The Warwick resident held one of the four division one winning entries on Saturday. When an official from The Lott confirmed the prize, the winning mum was still stunned, with her son by her side, recounting how they discovered her win. 'Thank you. We feel a bit odd, but it's bloody terrific!' the winning son laughed. 'We've just been quite emotional. Even hearing you confirm the good news is crazy. We're slowly realising it's a reality. 'It'll set my mum up completely. She's everything, and she's so deserving of this. It'll give her breathing room, and she can do some things she's always dreamt of. 'She asked me to check the ticket through my app, and I couldn't believe it. I just started screaming and crying for her! She wasn't even going to buy a ticket this week, but changed her mind Saturday morning. 'We've just been in limbo since then, and of course, we've put the ticket straight in a safe.' The winning mum said they were still 'pinching' themselves. 'We've had to make a few changes in the last few years with different life challenges, so it'll come in handy,' she said. 'First thing I'll do is pay the rates early.' A Wavell Heights woman has described her $1.67 million win as a 'ticket to freedom'. NewsWire/ David Crosling Credit: News Corp Australia Hynes Newsagency owner Peter Hynes said he was thrilled to hear his outlet had sold a division one winning ticket to a local. 'It's always an honour to sell a division one winning ticket and to know we've played a small part in someone's life-changing moment,' he said. 'Customers always love to hear we've had a win, and it helps restore their faith that locals do win. 'It was just in October that we last sold a division one prize in Saturday Lotto. We are in our 50th year of owning the newsagency and have sold many winners during this time. 'Congratulations to our winning customer. It's a life-changing amount, and we couldn't be happier for you.' Across Australia, there were four division one winning entries in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 4597, three from Queensland and one from Victoria. Meanwhile, the deadline to claim a life-changing lottery prize ends tonight, but 'sadly no one has come forward,' a Lott spokesman told NewsWire. The Saturday Gold Lotto player won just over $670,000 nearly seven years ago with a ticket purchased at a Helensvale newsagent, and with the claim period expiring, the prize money will be returned to players through community donations and promotions.
