Gareth Southgate 'offers to become new boss' of England rivals for World Cup
Gareth Southgate has been out of a job since leaving England last summer but has reportedly now offered himself up as the next Poland boss with the World Cup just over a year away
Gareth Southgate has offered become the next boss of Poland, almost a year on from his England exit, it's been claimed. Southgate left his job with the Three Lions following their Euro 2024 final loss to Spain last summer.
Now he's reportedly thrown his hat into the ring to remain in international football with the Poles, who have just seen their head coach resign. Michael Probierz has stepped away from his role after a public fallout with Robert Lewandowski.
The Barcelona striker, arguably the greatest player in his country's history, had stated he would never play for Poland whilst Probierz remained as their manager. The two clashed over a saga that saw Lewandowski stripped of the captaincy.
As Poland eye their next boss new outlet Przeglad Sportowy Onet claims that Southgate has opened the door to an international return by submitting an application. It is understood he would have to significantly lower his financial demands if he did want to take the job. His England salary was double the record amount paid to a Poland boss.
Southgate was an unknown quantity at international level before taking charge of England, but quickly thrived. He led the Three Lions to a World Cup semi-final and successive finals at the Euros.
If he was hired the immediate remit for a Poland boss would be to ensure World Cup qualification. The European nations currently sit third in a group of five with only the winner qualifying and the second place going into a play-off. Poland sit below Finland and the Netherlands as things stand. The Poles have been present at the last two World Cups and will hope to continue that trend next summer in North America.
Southgate, since leaving his England job, has been a technical observer at UEFA over the past season, which saw him working closely with UEFA performance analysis in order to provide reports on every national team and club competition in Europe.
The 54-year-old has been linked with club jobs in the past, the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham. He's confessed that he would like to re-write the narrative around his club career, where he got Middlesbrough relegated before going into the international scene.
Southgate previously said on his next opportunity: "This higher purpose kept me on track, gave me structure, made my life more fulfilling and is going to be extremely difficult to replicate. It's why I'm not limiting my future options to remaining as a football coach."

Nico Raskin alarm bells ring at Rangers amid 49ers transfer masterplan as Aston Villa talks 'start'
The 24-year-old has been on the rise in recent months and appears to be attracting interest from the Premier League Rangers new owners shouldn't cash in on Nicolas Raskin to fund their transfer plans this summer. That's according to Ibrox legend Stuart McCall - who hopes the Belgian international can remain in Glasgow amid reports of talks with Aston Villa. Andrew Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers completed their £75million takeover earlier this summer and immediately announced plans to plough another £20million into the Ibrox coffers. CEO Patrick Stewart has already promised new boss Russell Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the substantial eight-figure sum to bring in recruits. However, the scale of the rebuild required for Rangers to close the gap on Celtic could see the club cash-in on their prize assets - with Raskin leading the valuations after establishing himself as a mainstay of the Belgian national side. Het Nieuwsblad report that a potential Scottish Premiership departure is escalating for the 24-year-old with Aston Villa. It is claimed that talks between the Premier League side and the player's entourage "have already started" with a deal depending on "the negotiations between the clubs and the ambitions of Raskin himself." With the World Cup rapidly approaching, it is also noted that Belgium boss Rudi Garcia "welcomes" the move as he wants to see Raskin form a "close bond" with Villa stars Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana. But McCall has urged the owners to proceed with caution over a player he previously scouted while working at Sheffield United. He told the Sunday Post: "I really like watching Raskin play for Rangers every time I see him because he gives everything he's got - and he's a good player. "Raskin ticks the box of a good character to me. I don't know him personally but I watched him before he went to Rangers. "At Sheffield United, our head of recruitment asked me to take a look at Raskin. I watched him in a few games and liked what I saw. He wants to be in there fighting. "I saw him having that wee niggle at Callum McGregor in one of the Old Firm games. He's never happy to accept a defeat. "Every game has got to hurt you if it doesn't go well for Rangers. From my point of view - and as a Rangers supporter watching him - I'd definitely love him to be in our dressing room for the next few years. "Recruitment is going to be massive again this summer. You have a lot of fringe players who have been brought to the club who, really, mentality-wise have been wide of the mark. "It's OK having good players but the bottom line is you need more than that to play for Rangers and win titles. "Good players who are excellent characters will take you a long way. And you know you're getting that from Raskin." Former Hibs favourite Ryan Porteous in line for permanent move away from Watford this summer, as the ex-Easter Road skipper draws interest from the MLS. And, while David Gray isn't actively pursuing the Scotland defender as a priority target this summer, Hibs would be open to an emotional homecoming for Porteous. A lot may still depend on contract talks with Rocky Bushiri. The Congolese defender, now a free agent, is not short of suitors as he weighs up his next move – but hasn't rule out signing a new deal with Hibs. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Porteous has consistently been linked with a return to Hibs, who did try to land him on loan in January, only for the centre-half to opt for a move to Preston North End. Easter Road sporting director Malky Mackay has been keeping tabs on the situation, which may now be complicated – according to a report in The Mirror - by Watford's willingness to sell a player they signed for £450,000 in January of 2023. With two years of his contract remaining, but options to break back into the Watford first team likely to be limited, Porteous is looking for regular game time in an environment likely to earn him a recall to Steve Clarke's Scotland squad ahead of World Cup qualifying kicking off in September. Hibs know that their record of players earning international recognition, with Kieron Bowie's recent Scotland call-up just one example, makes them an attractive proposition for a lot of players. EFL Championship interest in defender - and Sunderland prospect Nectar on MLS radar They're also hoping that's a factor for Bushiri, who is attracting interest from England and the Continent – but is yet to make a final decision on what to do next. The Democratic Republic of Congo centre-half was a huge figure for Hibs last season, with his return to the starting XI sparking their climb from the foot of the table to a third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership. The 25-year-old Belgian-born central defender is wanted by a number of EFL Championship clubs, who see him as a future Premier League centre-half in need of a stepping stone to the world's richest league. But Bushiri is extremely happy at Hibs – and sees value in getting guaranteed minutes for a team guaranteed at least a crack at European football next season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Major League Soccer clubs are also among the teams interested, as The Evening News first revealed, in top Hibs transfer target Nectar Triantis. The Socceroos hopeful has two years left on his contract with the Premier League-bound Sunderland but, with chances to break into the first team at the Stadium of Light likely to be limited, other options are being actively explored. After two loan spells at Easter Road, Triantis remains open to the idea of a third stint in the capital. Hibs have been in negotiations with Sunderland, who would expect up to £1 million in compensation for any transfer, about both a permanent move AND the possibility of another season-long loan. Gray remains hopeful that the lure of playing alongside established Socceroos regulars Martin Boyle and Lewis Miller, keeping him very much on Australia boss Tony Popovic's radar, will be the deciding factor for a player who is focused on representing his country in next summer's finals in Canada, Mexico and the USA. With fellow Hibee Jack Iredale also earning his first Australia recognition last season, they've made a strong case for Easter Road as the ideal platform for any World Cup hopeful.

Enzo Maresca throws down the gauntlet to Cole Palmer as he reveals challenge he has set 'bored' star - after he hit out at Chelsea's style
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has challenged Cole Palmer to take the initiative in more games after their winning start at the Club World Cup. Palmer appeared critical of the side's approach in their victory in the UEFA Conference League final last month, saying he got 'sick of getting the ball and going backwards and sideways'. It was at that point he took control of the game against Real Betis in Wroclaw, creating two goals as the Blues came from behind to win 4-1. Palmer was again influential as Chelsea began their challenge at FIFA's global summer tournament with a 2-0 win over LAFC in Atlanta on Monday. 'I had a short conversation with Cole and I said to him that I really like the way he was today,' Maresca told reporters. 'He took responsibility, showed initiative on the ball. 'He was trying to receive the ball, go one-v-one against players, and this is the Cole we expect. 'After the Conference League final, he said he was bored when receiving the ball, so he decided to do something different. 'The day after that interview, I said to him that he could do it from the first minute and why did he wait so long? Why not do the same after one minute? 'Today he was exactly doing that, and we are happy when he does that. I've said many times Cole is our best player, a top player, and hopefully he can continue to do the right things.' Goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez got Maresca's side off to a victorious start in Group D in front of a sparse crowd of 22,137 at the 71,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Their next outing is against Brazilian side Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday.
