Nico Raskin alarm bells ring at Rangers amid 49ers transfer masterplan as Aston Villa talks 'start'
The 24-year-old has been on the rise in recent months and appears to be attracting interest from the Premier League
Rangers new owners shouldn't cash in on Nicolas Raskin to fund their transfer plans this summer.
That's according to Ibrox legend Stuart McCall - who hopes the Belgian international can remain in Glasgow amid reports of talks with Aston Villa.
Andrew Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers completed their £75million takeover earlier this summer and immediately announced plans to plough another £20million into the Ibrox coffers.
CEO Patrick Stewart has already promised new boss Russell Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the substantial eight-figure sum to bring in recruits.
However, the scale of the rebuild required for Rangers to close the gap on Celtic could see the club cash-in on their prize assets - with Raskin leading the valuations after establishing himself as a mainstay of the Belgian national side.
Het Nieuwsblad report that a potential Scottish Premiership departure is escalating for the 24-year-old with Aston Villa.
It is claimed that talks between the Premier League side and the player's entourage "have already started" with a deal depending on "the negotiations between the clubs and the ambitions of Raskin himself."
With the World Cup rapidly approaching, it is also noted that Belgium boss Rudi Garcia "welcomes" the move as he wants to see Raskin form a "close bond" with Villa stars Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana.
But McCall has urged the owners to proceed with caution over a player he previously scouted while working at Sheffield United.
He told the Sunday Post: "I really like watching Raskin play for Rangers every time I see him because he gives everything he's got - and he's a good player.
"Raskin ticks the box of a good character to me. I don't know him personally but I watched him before he went to Rangers.
"At Sheffield United, our head of recruitment asked me to take a look at Raskin. I watched him in a few games and liked what I saw. He wants to be in there fighting.
"I saw him having that wee niggle at Callum McGregor in one of the Old Firm games. He's never happy to accept a defeat.
"Every game has got to hurt you if it doesn't go well for Rangers. From my point of view - and as a Rangers supporter watching him - I'd definitely love him to be in our dressing room for the next few years.
"Recruitment is going to be massive again this summer. You have a lot of fringe players who have been brought to the club who, really, mentality-wise have been wide of the mark.
"It's OK having good players but the bottom line is you need more than that to play for Rangers and win titles.
"Good players who are excellent characters will take you a long way. And you know you're getting that from Raskin."

It all depends on what's going to motivate him next." Kwame Poku also looks to be inching closer to a move to Ibrox as the 23-year-old approaches the end of his Peterborough contract. Posh director of football Barry Fry has revealed he previously commanded a £5million and £5million in add-ons for the forward who is set to leave for a minimal fee. Should Poku move outside of England, a compensation fee under the lower rate FIFA guidelines would be due to the club due to cross-border rules. Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony told Poku to 'listen to common sense' and sign for an unnamed Championship club as he vented his frustration over the prospect of a cut-price payment. Speaking on his podcast, The Hard Truth, MacAnthony said: 'We know Kwame has been offered an absolute blockbuster move to a top, top club in England. Leah Williamson insists ‘standards are high' in inexperienced England squad

Asked what the mood is like with so many changes in camp, Williamson said: 'Everyone has a good attitude towards the job. This week is graft and then next week you start really focusing and honing in on the tournament. 'It's a fresh team in that sense. We probably carry less as a team now in terms of the experiences people have had, but I also see a group that is focused and wants to be better all the time. 'The standards are high, the standards from the more experienced players. It was a great session today and then it gets a bit more exciting, come Monday.' Williamson played a major part in England's Euro 2022 success but was ruled out of the entire World Cup campaign two years ago as the Lionesses made it to the final before losing to Spain. The 28-year-old ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament just three months before that tournament and is excited to be back with the group. She added: 'Personally, it's been a rocky period of time, like highest of highs and lowest of lows. 'I try and put that aside and I think it's a very different scenario now. 'I feel my age, if that makes sense, like I've definitely aged in the last couple of years for good and bad reasons. But it does feel slightly different. It's slightly different vibes, but I'm so excited to be back. 'I'm still keeping my head down and focusing on staying healthy and being in a good place. But I missed the last time and I'm very, very grateful to be here again.' Williamson enjoyed a successful season with Arsenal and was part of the team that helped the Gunners to European glory as they beat Barcelona 1-0 in the Champions League final last month. The Lionesses skipper insists she is now hungry for more success. 'I think one of the greatest things about being an athlete is that when you think you're done, you always have that extra part of yourself that you can tap into,' she said. 'You win and you think you want to just bathe in that euphoria. But there's always something else coming, and the best feeling in the world is being hungry for it, and I'm wanting to go again, winning in the summer. 'Being reminded of what that feels like (the Champions League win), I can't wait for the next challenge.'

Owen Farrell not focused on ‘hypothetical' Lions talk after rejoining Saracens
The 33-year-old this week cut short his stay at Racing 92 in order to move back to the Premiership with the club where he had previously spent his whole career, after injury wrecked his debut season in the Top 14. 'There's nothing for me to do other than concentrate on getting myself back (at Saracens) and getting myself in the best place I possibly can do. Everting else is hypothetical.' Farrell Sr had previously left the door open to his son joining up with the Lions in Australia, though he was not among the additional players recruited for a training camp in Portugal last week. He will however be in attendance when the team play Argentina in Dublin on Friday as he makes his debut as a TV pundit during Sky Sports' coverage of the game. The Saracens returnee, who has taken part in three previous Lions tours, was asked whether it was reasonable to assume he would be in the running for a late call-up given his experience. 'I'm not thinking like that,' he said. 'I think if you do start thinking like that you can tie yourself in knots. All that I can do is focus on what I've got going on and get myself in the best place I can be.' Farrell has not played since suffering a head injury during Racing's defeat to Lyon in last month's Challenge Cup semi-final, while a groin problem previously caused him to miss significant periods of what has turned to be his only season in France. The return to Saracens means he becomes immediately available for selection for Borthwick's England. 'We've kept in touch with Steve,' he said. 'He came out to Racing earlier in the season. The main thing is getting myself in a good place, getting myself back here, back in the Premiership to Saracens and loving what I'm doing. I really feel like I can do that here. That's the starting point. 'I keep talking about enjoying myself, I keep talking about being happy, but I think that's the way that I get more out of it now. That's what opens up a lot more opportunity. If I get to that and I'm loving what I'm doing then we'll see. 'I'm not retired, no.'
