News2409-07-2025
A 16-year-old boy was shot dead and three people were wounded at a wendy house in Lower Crossroads, Philippi East, on Tuesday afternoon.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, said they were among eight teenagers socialising and drinking in a structure in Block 9 when a man entered and opened fire.
'The 16-year-old died due to injuries sustained, and three others were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds,' Van Wyk added.
The motive for the attack is still under investigation.
Philippi East police are investigating a murder and three counts of attempted murder.
This comes just a month after three schoolchildren were gunned down in separate shootings in nearby Samora Machel.
All three were wearing their school uniforms at the time.
No arrests have been made.
Nyanga Community Policing Forum member Dumisani Qwebe condemned violence against teenagers.
'This shows the deep challenges we face in our communities. If young people who haven't even begun contributing to society are massacred like this, what kind of future can we expect?'
Qwebe urged residents to share any information with police via the following anonymous channels: Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the My SAPS app.

Teen randomly killed Uber driver to ‘let off some steam' before driving the stolen car to his girlfriend's house, cops say

A teenager allegedly told authorities in New Mexico that he killed an Uber driver to 'let off some steam,' according to reports. Sheliky Sanchez, 18, has been charged with murder, armed robbery and tampering with evidence after the execution-style shooting of Joseph Andrus around 3 a.m. Friday in Albuquerque, authorities said. Andrus, the Uber driver, was found dead by the side of the road by police. Police said Sanchez asked his girlfriend to order him an Uber Thursday night because 'his friend has a car for him and he is going to get it,' according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Albuquerque Journal. Sanchez claimed to authorities he looked at available Uber drivers and picked the one he wanted. He said that he and Andrus had a long conversation during the drive, and that Andrus 'was actually really cool,' he told police. Once they got to the drop-off location, police say Sanchez ordered Andrus out of the car and shot him multiple times. The driver died at the scene, Albuquerque police said. The teen reportedly admitted to authorities that he killed Andrus, saying it was in part to 'let off some steam,' according to court documents obtained by KOB4. Sanchez told detectives that while he watched Andrus die, he 'felt bad for him a little bit, but just getting that satisfaction out, out of the way. It's like a relief. Like taking an in and out breath', the documents said. The teen then stole Andrus' car, which was later found at Sanchez's girlfriend's house. When police arrived at the home, Sanchez told them he had never taken an Uber ride and said his friends always drove him places. Police said that when he was asked if he knew why his girlfriend had ordered an Uber, he told them, 'No,' according to the Journal. Detectives told Sanchez that the car outside his girlfriend's house was owned by an Uber driver. Sanchez then claimed that he had paid for the vehicle in cash, according to the complaint. When confronted by police about his confusing story, Sanchez reportedly admitted to the killing. The teen, 'couldn't take it out on certain people, so he wanted to take it out on anybody he could find', according to the complaint. 'I don't know what it was,' Sanchez told police when he was asked why he chose Andrus. 'He just seemed like a good guy. I don't really go for good people.' SWAT officers arrested Sanchez on Friday at his girlfriend's home. Sanchez has been booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center, and charged with murder, armed robbery and tampering with evidence. Uber said that it was working with authorities following the driver's killing. 'We are shocked and heartbroken for Joseph's family and loved ones after this senseless attack. We've been in contact with the police and are grateful for their work to bring those responsible to justice,' Uber said in a statement. Sanchez appeared in court Saturday, where prosecutors told the judge they were filing a motion to keep the teen in jail ahead of trial. A judge is set to decide whether he will be held in jail.

Rachel Morin's mother explains painstaking process of writing statement to read at killer's sentencing

For nearly two years, the family of Rachel Morin has carried the weight of unimaginable grief after the Maryland mother of five's brutal murder at the hands of an illegal immigrant. On Monday, her loved ones, including her mother, Patty Morin, will speak in court, seeking justice, closure and dignity while remembering the life she lived. "I'm going to ask that the judge would honor Rachel's life and preserve her dignity by giving her the justice that she deserves," Patty Morin told "Fox & Friends" ahead of the sentencing. She will soon undergo a monumental task, capturing her daughter's life in a series of words that encompass her worth and the pain left behind in her absence. Morin told Lawrence Jones she had thought about what to say since the crime happened two years ago, writing notes and compiling nine drafts of her impact statement, none of which seemed adequate. "When you get to the point where you actually sit down and write the statement, you don't think it's good enough… how can I put the value of her life, reduce it to ink and paper? And then how do I feel about this person and what he's done to take that life away? And then I think about my grandchildren and her siblings and the pain that they've suffered. And how that, today, they're going to be expressing their pain as well in statements…" she said. "It's just going to be a really hard day. No way around it." Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, the illegal immigrant convicted of raping and murdering Morin in August 2023, will be sentenced on all counts, including first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree rape, third-degree sex offense and third-degree kidnapping. Morin said she doesn't know if she would want to hear from her daughter's killer because she isn't sure she would believe what he said if he spoke. Morin described her daughter as someone full of "energy" – outgoing, loving and happy. "It's just so odd to have someone that had so much life and energy and light, and now we're at this end where it's this darkness and death and just the void of that life in our lives…" she said.
