Felix Baumgartner's official cause of death after famous skydiver's freak accident
The cause of death has been revealed for Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner, who was killed in a catastrophic paraglider crash while descending over an Italian resort.
The 56-year-old Red Bull-sponsored athlete died at around 4pm local time on Thursday after his motorised paraglider spiralled fatally out of control above Porto Sant'Elpidio, a coastal town in Italy's Fermo province. Baumgartner, who was holidaying with his partner Michela Radulescu, had been soaring above the Adriatic Sea when he crashed into a swimming pool at the Le Mimose holiday camp.
An investigation into the incident is now underway. Attorney General Raffaele Iannella confirmed to BILD that autopsies are currently being carried out on Baumgartner's body at the forensic medicine department of nearby Fermo hospital.

He said: "What we know for sure so far: Baumgartner died on impact, his spine fractured in the lower part of his back, and his spinal cord was damaged."
Local media reports suggest a freak mid-air malfunction may have caused the sudden descent. Investigators are examining the possibility that a camera mounted to Baumgartner's paraglider dislodged and fell into the propeller, destroying it mid-flight.
Authorities are working to recover the camera to piece together a clearer timeline of the crash. Italy's public prosecutor's office has said the investigation could take between 40 and 45 days to complete.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Michela Radulescu posted chilling footage of Baumgartner taken just minutes before his final flight.
Sharing the clip on X, she wrote: 'For over 12 years I was there for every take off and landing, from skydiving, paragliding, helicopter flights, paramotor to aerobatic shows. And when I couldn't be there for some heli flights, we had the WLC code - 'the Wifey Landing Call'. Never missed one. Except …this one.'
Describing him as 'truly special,' she said Baumgartner was 'going home now, up there, where he was the happiest ever.' The 55-year-old also thanked supporters for keeping 'his unique legacy high up.'
Baumgartner shot to global fame in 2012 when he jumped from the edge of space in what remains the world 's most extreme skydive.

Ollie Watkins heads Man Utd's two-man striker transfer shortlist as club make decision on transfer for new keeper
The Red Devils are also looking to sell players in order to clear the way for new signings NEXT OF KINS Ollie Watkins heads Man Utd's two-man striker transfer shortlist as club make decision on transfer for new keeper OLLIE WATKINS heads Manchester United's two man striker shortlist. But the Old Trafford side will not get involved in a bidding war for PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, leaving the door open for Chelsea and Manchester City to try to lure the Italian. 6 Ollie Watkins has been in pre-season action for Aston Villa Credit: Getty 6 Gianluigi Donnarumma's PSG future is looking in doubt Credit: Shutterstock Editorial United are weighing up moves for either Aston Villa striker Watkins or Leipzig's Slovenian front man Benjamin Sesko. That rules out any interest in Nicolas Jackson, despite Chelsea being increasingly keen to find a taker for the Senegalese attacker. And any move may only be feasible if United can move on Rasmus Hojlund, preferably on a full-time basis rather than a Marcus Rashford-style loan. With United having spent £130m to give boss Ruben Amorim his two top targets - Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the Old Trafford hierarchy do still want a line-leading upgrade. READ MORE ON MAN UTD devilish Man Utd 'looking to hijack Newcastle's Sesko transfer after holding talks' Contact has been made with the entourages of both potential targets, with Watkins' proven Premier League experience a major plus The England striker, 29, has scored 75 top flight goals since moving to Villa Park. Before that, he was part of a successful attacking unit including Mbeumo at Brentford, a further tick in his box While Villa have dismissed all suggestions of an approach and insisted Watkins is not for sale at any price, they did offer him to Arsenal in the January window, before performing a U-turn after selling Jhon Duran instead. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK 6 6 Watkins is more of a box player than Sesko - who was also on Arsenal's summer wishlist - but has proven mobility and running power. At this stage, United are keeping both options open in case one becomes problematic. Man Utd stars baffled after being ordered to wear new high-tech JACKET in sizzling 42C heat on pre-season tour of US The Old Trafford club, aware of Villa's public stance, recognise that negotiations may not be simple and could take until the latter days of the summer window next month. Selling Hojlund, and also commanding fees for Alejandro Garnacho and Antony would make meeting hefty price-tags more likely. Meanwhile, United have shelved their interest in Villa keeper Emi Martinez. A loan offer was made and rejected last week but the club's current position is that Andre Onana will start the season as first choice. And that means no move for Donnarumma, whose contract stand-off with PSG has opened up the prospect he might be available. The Italian, with one year left on his deal with the Champions League winners, is seeking a significant mark-up in his £210,000 per week salary. But United are not willing to go there, meaning they will not rival City - who may lose Ederson and could be reluctant to make new signing James Trafford first choice, and Chelsea as potential Prem contenders. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Ex-Rangers star John Lundstram ‘holds talks over shock move to second-tier European club where ex-Ibrox teammate plays'

But the chance to remain in Turkey could have been there for the midfielder, it's been claimed. After a slow start to life at the club, he established himself as a key man in the side. But Turkish Super Lig clubs are limited to the number of foreign players they're allowed in their squad and Trabzonspor have been looking to move on some of their current overseas stars this transfer window. Lundstram's name was earmarked at the beginning of the summer as one of those who could be moved on to free up a space, as well as former Rangers teammate Borna Barisic who has endured a horror time of things at the club. Then came the dramatic development over the last couple of days that Lundstram had LEFT Trabzonspor's pre-season training camp. Turkish reports suggested he had done so in order to TERMINATE his contract. Lundstram now looks set for a move to Hull City. A move to the Tiger could only happen if Lundstram was a free agent as the English Championship club are currently under a transfer embargo. While Hull are still allowed to register players, they are NOT allowed to pay a transfer fee for any new recruits. The club also look set to add another Trabzonspor player, Enis Destan, to their squad in the coming days. Major Mikey Moore Rangers loan doubts & 'strange situation' at Celtic + transfer news Go Ballistic While Lundstram does indeed look set to be joining Hull, it appears that there could also have been an opportunity to remain in Turkish football. Local journalist Serhat Kantoglu claims that Lundstram held talks with second tier outfit Esenler Erokspor. The club, who have ambitions to make it to the Super Lig, already have one former Rangers star in their ranks. They snapped-up Ryan Jack last year and he's gone on to become a key man in their midfield. Lundstram had caused a stir earlier this month by following the club on Instagram, leading to plenty of fans speculating that he could be about to join the club. While that new report claims talks were held, Hull certainly still appears to be Lundstram's destination. Rangers, meanwhile, are closing in on the signing of Mikey Moore from Tottenham. The winger, 17, looks set to join the Light Blues on loan for the season amid interest from several other English clubs. 3 Ryan Jack is on the books of Esenler Erokspor Credit: PA Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? We did it – Hannah Hampton thanks late grandfather for inspiring Euro success
Hampton's two saves in England's penalty shootout with Spain to decide Sunday's final capped off a brilliant Euros for the Chelsea stopper, who set the stage for Chloe Kelly to fire in the winning spot-kick and ensure the Lionesses defended the crown they won at Wembley. The 24-year-old was named player of the match after the final, and on Monday shared she was heartbroken that her grandad did not live to see her fulfil their shared dream of seeing her play for England at a major tournament. A post shared by H (@_hannahhampton) Posting to her Instagram alongside a picture of her green England shirt with 'grandpa' printed in the neckline, Hampton wrote: 'Dear Grandpa. 'Two days before the biggest tournament of my life, you left. It still doesn't feel real. I kept thinking when I'd call nannie I'd hear your voice again – one of your jokes, or one of those little comments you'd make that somehow said everything without saying much at all. 'You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. 'You were always there: watching, encouraging, teaching. You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way. 'I miss our chats. I miss you saying, 'only us athletes understand' — always with a little smirk like you were in on something special. And you were. You got it. You understood what this meant to me. You understood what it took.' Hampton – who had usurped Euro 2022 winner Mary Earps to become Sarina Wiegman's first-choice keeper – was under enormous pressure to deliver in Switzerland, particularly after Earps announced her shock international retirement in May, leaving Hampton with two uncapped backups in Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse. She was a revelation at the tournament, from her wonder pass to set up Lauren James' goal against the Netherlands in the group stage to playing through a bloody nose in their quarter-final shootout with Sweden. Hampton kept England alive for 120 minutes in the final before denying Women's Super League player of the season Mariona Caldentey, then back-to-back Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati, in the shootout. back to back. — Hannah Hampton (@hannahhampton_) July 27, 2025 Hampton has made a point of proving people wrong her whole life. Had she listened to the doctors who diagnosed her with an eye condition that affects her depth perception, she might not be playing football, let alone goalkeeping, at all. On Sunday, she proved her detractors wrong once and for all. 'It breaks my heart that you didn't get to see me walk out for our country at my first major tournament,' she continued. 'Something you dreamed of for me, something we talked about so many times. I wanted to see your face or hear your voice after the game calling back home. I wanted to share that with you. 'But I know, deep down, you were still there. I felt you with me. In the tunnel. On the pitch. In the tough moments. I heard you in my head when I needed strength. I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. 'I carried you through every minute, and I always will. I did it. We did it.' Hampton was one of four England players named in UEFA's team of the tournament on Monday afternoon, along with defender Lucy Bronze and forwards Kelly and Alessia Russo. Four players from runners-up Spain also made the XI – Irene Paredes and midfield trio Patri Guijarro, Bonmati and Alexia Putellas – along with Italy's Elena Linari and Germany duo Franziska Kett and Jule Brand.
