Street prostitution: 'We're patrolling the streets to support vulnerable women'
Street prostitution is still a problem in Scotland's major cities, leaving desperate women vulnerable to violence, for as little as £10.
Since the start of 2025, nine men have been charged with soliciting in Dundee.

On Tuesday evening, STV News joined officers who were patrolling on foot while others circled the area in unmarked cars, looking for kerb crawlers.
Police officers Elise and Kirsten have got to know many of the women well, who are vulnerable and desperate.

Sergeant Kirsten Kiddie told STV News: 'Tonight we've been out and about in plain clothes, some vehicles out and some in marked police vehicles.
'We're just looking for patterns of vehicles travelling in the area that are potentially involved in soliciting females involved in on-street sex work.
'So what we'd be doing is looking at vehicles that are circling the area, maybe stop and engage with any known females.
'We're in a known area that would be known to us as a police service as where people work in terms of picking up what we would commonly refer to as kerb-crawlers. 'Tonight we've seen a few vehicles that have been within the area. They've not quite reached the threshold for where wed be looking to take action against them yet but we're monitoring them and monitoring them in he area. 'We've obviously seen a couple of females however there's a wee bit of level activity in terms of numbers within the street tonight. One of them has made off before we could engage with them and we've got another unit there trying to deal with a female and offer them some kind of support services and check their welfare.'
Operation Begonia began in Aberdeen and is now in action in Dundee and Glasgow and will be rolled out across the country.
It aims to challenge the demand for prostitution and ultimately help steer women away from selling sex on the streets.

Man racially abused and left in hospital after 'unprovoked' attacked
A man was racially abused and left in hospital after being subject to an 'unprovoked' attack in North Lanarkshire. Police were contacted after the 49-year-old was assaulted in Harthill at around 7.20pm on Wednesday, August 13. The man was walking along Miller Street when a Vauxhall Corsa stopped beside him, a man got out of the car, attacked him, and made racial comments. He attended hospital for treatment to his injuries. Police have launched a witness appeal following the incident, which they describe as 'completely unacceptable'. Officers are searching for a white man, aged between 20 and 30 years old, in connection with the incident. He was wearing a black coloured football top, dark coloured shorts, and trainers at the time of the attack. Detective constable Verity Gregg said: 'This has been an unprovoked attack on a man walking along the street. It is completely unacceptable. 'I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around that time who may have information to get in touch with us. In particular, if you have any dash-cam or doorbell footage, please pass it on as it could provide additional information on the incident or suspect.' Two arrested as Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blockade factory
A man and woman have been arrested after campaigners staged a protest outside a factory in Edinburgh in a demonstration against arms being sent to Israel. Members of Shut Down Leonardo blockaded the entrance to the Leonardo factory on Crewe Road North with a specially adapted van on Monday morning. The group said the Italian-owned company makes components for 'deadly' F-35 fighter jets, which are used by Israel. One activist locked on inside the factory and another locked on to the top of the van, while glass jars filled with red and green paint were smashed. Police confirmed a 35-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man were arrested in connection with the protest. STV News The group is protesting against the company building weapons which are used by Israel. STV News A spokesperson said: 'Around 6.15am on Monday, August 18, 2025, we were called to a report of a protest outside a business premises in the Crewe Road North area of Edinburgh. Officers are in attendance, and a 35-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man have been arrested in connection. 'Enquiries are ongoing.' It is the second protest outside the factory, with the group being launched on July 15 this year, after claiming the company receives 'huge sums' of taxpayers' money from the Scottish Government, in the form of subsidies. A spokesperson for Shut Down Leonardo said: 'With most world leaders either ignoring Israel's genocide in Gaza, or actively involved in it, we cannot look aside while our Palestinian brothers and sisters are being exterminated. 'By shutting down Leonardo, we hope to disrupt the supply chain to the deadly F-35 war planes.' Leonardo UK has been asked for comment. Passenger, 22, dies and driver, 21, fighting for life after one-car crash
A man has died and another is fighting for his life in hospital following a crash in Fife. A black Seat Leon car was involved in a collision at the junction between the B996 and the B9097 near Blairadam at around 10.50pm on Sunday. Emergency services attended, and a 22-year-old man, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 21-year-old male driver was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where his condition is described as life-threatening. A 20-year-old man, also a passenger, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The road was closed for over ten hours to allow for investigations. Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area or witnessed the crash to come forward. Sergeant David Farr said: 'My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died at this difficult time. 'I would urge anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the crash and witnessed what happened, or has any dashcam footage which could assist, to please get in touch with officers.'
