Include developing nations in multilateral institutions, says Lok Sabha Speaker
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday (June 5, 2025) expressed concern over the inadequate representation of developing countries in multilateral institutions. Noting that this imbalance hampers global equity, he urged the BRICS nations to correct it.
Addressing the second Working Session of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brasilia, Mr. Birla said global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic had disproportionately affected the Global South and sought coordinated action to address such challenges.
'We are concerned that representation of developing countries in international institutions remains inadequate. This imbalance hampers global equity and balanced development. Therefore, BRICS countries must collectively make concrete efforts to enhance the participation of the Global South in such institutions,' Mr. Birla said. His speech was shared by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
He said challenges related to health, food and energy security have intensified, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be difficult without concrete and coordinated action.
'Despite global challenges, BRICS nations have made inspiring progress in the realm of economic development. India believes that to further strengthen this progress, we must enhance intra-BRICS trade, investment and financial cooperation,' the Lok Sabha Speaker said.
Mr. Birla welcomed the recent expansion of the BRICS grouping and said this will make the collaboration more inclusive and impactful.

What ECI Said? The ECI hit back with a point wise rebuttal, stating that 'facts are completely being ignored." 'Unsubstantiated allegations raised against the Electoral Rolls of Maharashtra are an affront to the rule of law. The Election Commission had brought out all these facts in its reply to the INC on 24th December 2024 itself, which is available on ECI's website. It appears that all these facts are being completely ignored while raising such issues again and again," the ECI said. Rahul Gandhi's Allegations The Congress leader ignited a political row after he claimed that a systematic method was used to influence the election outcome in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a post on X, the grand-old party leader summarised the key points of an article he wrote for The Indian Express, where he described the so-called electoral manipulation. In his article, Gandhi outlined a five-step process he claimed was used to tilt the Maharashtra election. 'Step 1: Rig the panel for appointing the Election Commission Step 2: Add fake voters to the roll Step 3: Inflate voter turnout Step 4: Target the bogus voting exactly where BJP needs to win Step 5: Hide the evidence," the Leader of Opposition wrote in his post. 'It's not hard to see why the BJP was so desperate in Maharashtra," Gandhi wrote in his post. 'But rigging is like match-fixing – the side that cheats might win the game, but damages institutions and destroy public faith in the result." 'All concerned Indians must see the evidence. Judge for themselves. Demand answers," Gandhi added. He also warned that what happened in Maharashtra could be repeated elsewhere. 'The match-fixing of Maharashtra will come to Bihar next, and then anywhere the BJP is losing," he said, calling match-fixed elections are a 'poison" for any democracy. Earlier at multiple occasions, Gandhi had raised concerns over the surge in new voters, particularly between the 2024 Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections in Maharashtra, highlighting that 39 lakh new voters were added in just five months after the Lok Sabha polls. 'We want to bring to the notice of the people of India some information that we have found regarding the Maharashtra elections. We have studied in detail the voter lists, the voting pattern and we have a team working on this for some time. There are many irregularities that we have found," Gandhi had said in February this year. Maharashtra Elections 2024 The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance had scored a massive and astonishing victory over Maha Vikas Aghadi in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The unprecedented electoral sweep is a record win as no alliance has ever crossed the magic mark of 200 seats in the Maharashtra polls. The ruling Mahayuti had won 234 of the 288 seats in the Maharashtra elections, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party, winning 132 seats on its own. Bhopal: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday reiterated complete support and cooperation to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, saying he believes that his successor would do a better job than him for the growth of the state. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, made this statement while addressing a programme in his home district Sehore. CM Mohan Yadav was the chief guest in the programme. "I am not the one who would say I have done this and that. I will be happier if Mohan Yadav do better than me for the people of Madhya Pradesh," Shivraj Singh Chouhan said while addressing a public rally in Sehore. Meanwhile, he also mentioned that his padyatra carried out in his hometown Budhni was presented in a 'wrong way'. He said that some mediapersons had made assessments on their own. "But, let me make it clear that the party's instructions are important. Mohan Yadav is Chief Minister, and I am Union Agriculture Minister," he said. Speaking further, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that being a public representative, he must come to visit the people of his constituency, and it should not be interpreted otherwise. "But some mediapersons tried to speculate that in another way which was totally wrong," the Union Minister said. During his speech, which lasted nearly 20 minutes, Shivraj Singh Chouhan sounded critical of the media a few times, asserting that his Budhni Padyatra was presented in a wrong way, whereas he was committed to follow the party's instructions. He was referring to a two-day 'Viksit Bharat Sankalp Padyatra' in the Vidisha constituency which was organised in May to highlight the welfare schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Along with many of his supporters, his family members including son and daughter-in-law had also participated on the second day of padyatra. However, according to sources, within the party, Shivraj Singh Chouhan's march was perceived as his personal endeavour to stay connected with his Lok Sabha constituency and the state where he was Chief Minister for more than 16 years.

New Delhi, June 7 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the 2024 Maharashtra polls were "rigged" and serve as a "blueprint for rigging democracy", and added that the same "match-fixing will come to Bihar next". Tagging an article written by himself, titled 'Match-fixing Maharashtra', in an English Daily, the former Congress president on X said, "How to steal an election? Maharashtra assembly elections in 2024 were a blueprint for rigging democracy". Giving "step by step" account of his claim, Gandhi said, "First rig the panel for appointing the Election Commission then add fake voters to the roll, inflate voter turnout and target the bogus voting exactly where BJP needs to win and then hide the evidence". He further said, "It's not hard to see why the BJP was so desperate in Maharashtra. But rigging is like match-fixing - the side that cheats might win the game, but damages institutions and destroy public faith in the result".
