The Brits 2025: A night of glitz, glamour and awesome awards

BBC News02-03-2025

The Brit Awards, one of the biggest music award ceremonies in the UK, took place in London on Saturday night. The awards celebrate the best artists and music from the UK and around the world.
Charli XCX wins big
The spotlight was shining brightly on Charli XCX, who had a super successful night. She took home FIVE awards, including the biggest ones of all – Best Artist, Best Album, and even Song of the Year for her hit track Guess, which is a collaboration with Billie Eilish.
Solo success for Little Mix's Jade
Jade Thirlwall is now on her solo journey away from Little Mix, but she's still winning awards. She picked up the Best Pop Artist award at the ceremony. She also had one of the busiest live performances of the night, with several outfit changes. Over the course of the night, she wore six different outfits. But her impressive dress proved difficult as she climbed the stairs to pick up her trophy. Thankfully the girl group Sugababes were there to hand over the award and helped her up the steps.
Sabrina Carpenter kicks the night off
Also performing on the night was Sabrina Carpenter, who opened the show with a British-inspired performance of Espresso, Bed Chem and Rule, Britannia. She also took home the Brits Global Success Award, which was brought back to the ceremony this year. The singer spent an incredible 21 weeks at number one in the UK singles chart last year - more than anyone has ever achieved in a single calendar year.
The other big winners
Chappell Roan also had an incredible night, winning the award for Best International Artist and International Song of the Year. One of the most exciting moments of the night was when Myles Smith won Best Rising Star. Just one year ago, he quit his job to follow his dream of making music and now he's got a shiny award to show for it.
Stormzy was looking extra cool as he accepted the prize for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, but if you're wondering why he was wearing sunglasses indoors, it's because he had accidentally hurt his eye playing padel."I'm wearing shades because I mashed up my eye playing padel [ball]," said Stormzy, as he accepted his award. "I've got a very sore eye - I'm not being a mad man with shades on inside."
Finally, Ezra Collective made history by becoming the first jazz band to win Best Group. They took a moment to thank the youth clubs and schools that helped them growing up."This moment right here is because of the great youth clubs and the great teachers, and the great schools that support young people playing music," said frontman Femi Koleoso. To prove his point, he invited the London youth group Kinetika Bloco onto the stage to play Ezra Collective's jazz anthem Shaking Body.

She landed the deal after becoming a major player for Sky, with her comedy-drama Brassic one of the most popular series to air on the platform. A source said: 'Michelle has really been enjoying maternity leave with Palma, but she'll be back to work soon to film these new adverts for Sky. 'She has signed a six-figure deal for the job and is thrilled to have been chosen to appear alongside Idris, who has been their 'face'. 'Brassic is ending after the seventh series and Michelle is keen to still be a part of the Sky brand. 'Landing this ad is huge for Michelle, as she's fast becoming a brand in her own right. "Everything she touches seems to turn to gold.' The actress, 38, found fame as Tina McIntyre on Coronation Street after joining the ITV soap in 2007. But it was after she left in 2014 her career really took off, with hits such as BBC military drama Our Girl from 2016 to 2020, playing Georgie Lane. Last year, she had the starring role as Maya Stern in Netflix's Harlan Coben thriller Fool Me Once — which racked up more than 100 million views globally. The Sun revealed last year that the Manchester-born actress, who is married to Heart radio DJ and former The Only Way is Essex star Mark Wright, 38, was sitting on a £3.6million fortune. Michelle admitted leaving Coronation Street after six years had pushed her onwards to succeed with her career. She said: 'For me, it was a massive learning platform. "I took a long, long time to decide to leave. It was very hard. 'And then, when they told me they were killing off my character and there was no going back, I thought I would never work again. 'My security was ripped away, which made me push forward and work harder.' 3 Idris Elba will join Michelle in leading the Sky brand Unlock even more award-winning articles as The Sun launches brand new membership programme - Sun Club.

Sabrina Carpenter sparks huge backlash over 'disturbing' new album cover

Sabrina Carpenter has been met with a wave of backlash from fans after sharing the cover for her new album, Man's Best Friend. The Espresso singer, 26, sent us all into meltdown last week when she dropped new single Manchild, with many convinced that the lyrics refer to her relationship with ex-boyfriend Barry Keoghan. Hot on the heels of her latest earworm, the 26-year-old announced that her next offering – a follow-up to Short N' Sweet – will be released on August 29. Taking to Instagram earlier today, the Grammy-winner unveiled the artwork imagery, which showed her on her knees in a black minidress and heels. She could be seen posing for the camera and holding her hand up to a man's trouser leg, as he stood over her and gripped a fistful of her hair. The second picture in the post included a zoomed-in photo of a dog wearing a tag adorned with 'Man's Best Friend'. 'My new album, Man's Best Friend, is out on August 29, 2025,' she captioned the post. 'I can't wait for it to be yours x.' Although followers were delighted at the prospect of new music from Sabrina, her accompanying photoshoot left many 'uncomfortable'. Flocking to social media, users branded the album cover 'disturbing', and begged the Please Please Please star to 'get up'. Below the announcement on Instagram, Edersoaresx penned: 'Lol this cover art is so disgusting. As a fan I don't like it :(.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Carehanapov said: 'I dont wanna see no man dragging you around by your hair mother please get up [sic].' 'Does anybody else find this cover really disturbing?,' xxfrecklesandfairies questioned. In a discussion over on Reddit, Adorable_Slide_921 simply complained: 'Ooooh boy do I hate this!' 'The first image is very triggering for me. I hate this. A LOT,' Potential-Friend-133 agreed. Wise_Reporter_6802 posted: 'What the hell is that cover? I love Sabrina's music and I've been supporting her since 2017 but this is terrible.' Lily4ever replied: 'The cover is making me uncomfortable.' As L3tigre added: 'The visceral reaction I just got from this. It's a no.' Sabrina has yet to address the backlash, but has posted her announcement across her various social media pages. Speaking to fans about her upcoming music, she said: 'I didn't plan on releasing a new record however when inspiration strikes, I go to the studio, and when it doesn't, I still go to the studio. 'But luckily life was really happening to me and inspiration struck! I tried not to overthink the process this time. 'I felt so at ease making Man's Best Friend that I felt like it was a gift that shouldn't be taken for granted as every inch came together so effortlessly, different from my other previous projects where I'd bang my head to crack numerous codes. 'This one felt like riding a bike! I went back to some of my favorite artists growing up listening to a lot of Stevie, Dolly, Donna etc and was surprised to find so many of those artists I loved put out a new record every year for a long time. 'Can't say that is or will be the norm for me, but this time it really eased my mind about putting something out when it feels right!' More Trending Sabrina has been booked and busy over the last few months, jetting around the world on her tour – with stops in London, Dublin, Manchester and Paris. Over the weekend, she performed at Primavera in Barcelona for the first time, joining Chappell Roan and Charli XCX on the line-up. She will next be performing across two dates at Hyde Park's British Summer Time festival (BST) next month, before brining her run of dates to the US. Metro has contacted Sabrina's reps for a comment. David Beckham to guest edit edition of Country Life Magazine

The former England captain and businessman will join the editorial team for the October 22 edition of the magazine with the aim of celebrating what the countryside means to him and his family. He follows in the footsteps of Royal Family members who previously joined the editor-in chief Mark Hedges at the helm, including the King, the Princess Royal and the Queen. Beckham said: 'I am honoured to have been invited to guest edit an edition of a magazine that I have always admired and read. 'I am really looking forward to working with the editorial team to produce an issue that will celebrate what the countryside and the great British landscape means to me and my family.' This comes as Beckham is to be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours, according to reports by The Sun. The football star regularly documents his life in the countryside by posting pictures and videos on his Instagram including him harvesting vegetables, gardening and his flock of chickens. Mark Hedges, Country Life editor-in-chief, said: 'I know he has a deep love of the countryside, which has grown since he retired as a professional footballer, although he is, of course, still extremely busy as a businessman and an ambassador for a host of causes, such as Unicef and The King's Foundation, as well as being co-owner of Inter Miami CF in the US and Salford City Football Club in the UK. 'As someone who is passionate about the countryside, I'm excited to see what his special commemorative issue will bring.' The one-off edition aims to highlight how the countryside has played an important part in Beckham's life. It will feature his favourite view, his best-loved recipe and spotlight his rural champions, including the craftsmen and woman who helped shape his home in the Cotswolds. Beckham, who played for his country 115 times, is the only Englishman to score at three different World Cups and his career included the treble-winning campaign of 1998-99, when Manchester United won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. He earned the third highest number of England caps of all time for the men's team, and was captain on 59 occasions. The former winger married Spice Girl Victoria, also known as Posh Spice, in 1999.
