Seven-try Edinburgh crush Ulster to seal play-off spot

BBC News16-05-2025
United Rugby Championship: Edinburgh v UlsterEdinburgh (19) 47Tries: Graham 3, Bradbury 2, Ashman, Shoeman Cons: Thompson 4, Healy 2 Ulster (12) 17Tries: Kok, Penalty, Postlethwaite
Darcy Graham's hat-trick and Magnus Bradbury's double helped Edinburgh secure a place in the last eight of the URC as they swept to a bonus-point win over Ulster in the Scottish capital.Cardiff's loss to the Stormers earlier in the evening meant that a four-try victory was the target for the hosts. They scored seven.Edinburgh ran in three of the four they needed in the first half. Graham, Bradbury and Ewan Ashman scored for the home side but a penalty try and a gift to Werner Kok made it a seven-point game at the break. The outstanding Bradbury got his second after the interval and with it came that critical bonus-point score early in the second half.Pierre Schoeman went over for a fifth in what was a terrific performance on a high-pressure night. Even when Jude Postlethwaite ran in a spectacular score from his own 22, Graham responded quickly. And then the little genius struck again at the end. If the Lions happen to be looking for another wing anytime soon, they need look no further. The victory means that Jamie Ritchie, a lifelong Edinburgh player exiting for France, hasn't yet played his last game for his club. His last home game, for sure, but there's still life left in this season for his team.
A frenetic opening saw Edinburgh blow two big chances from close-range lineouts only to recover and cut Ulster open soon after, Graham being the man doing the cutting.Wes Goosen put the wing through a gap and ran all the way to the posts at a packed Hive Stadium. Nice start for the home team needing a bonus point win to make the knockouts. Not so nice for Ulster, who were only playing for pride. And it got better soon after as they turned the screw. Another close-range lineout but this time they executed, Bradbury blasting his way through what was left of the Ulster defence. With a lead of 12-0 and all the momentum, Edinburgh then got hit between the eyes by Ulster's response. The visitors got a penalty try when Graham, in an attempt at cutting out what would have been a try-scoring pass to Zac Ward, deliberately knocked-on.Graham was sent to the bin for his troubles. He was only in there a few minutes when Ulster levelled through Kok, who picked up and crashed over after Wes Goosen failed to deal with a routine chip through. The home team regained the initiative in quick order. From another lineout inside the Ulster 22, Ashman went like the clappers and thundered over. Ross Thompson converted and the gap was seven. The Graham yellow card spell finished 7-5 to Edinburgh and Sean Everitt's team were a step closer to the last eight. As long as they won, which is rarely easy for Edinburgh with their propensity for drama. There was no such vulnerability this time. Edinburgh began the new half powerfully. When Hamish Watson, playing wonderfully, whipped Nathan Doak into touch near his own line, Edinburgh had the attacking platform they needed. It took a few attempts but Bradbury eventually put them into bonus point land after a tap and drive near the posts. Thompson's conversion stretched the lead out to 14.Schoeman added a fifth just before the hour, the Lion barrelling over from a few metres. Thompson converted. Postlethwaite struck and Graham turned one try into three in quick order. Relief and delight at the Hive.

United must strive for Euro return

Defender Bert Esselink says Dundee United must aim to be back in Europe next season after showing they can compete in continental Goodwin's side led 4-2 on aggregate against a Rapid Vienna side who reached the quarter-finals last season, before ultimately going out of Conference League qualifying at Tannadice on Thursday on penalties. "We have to strive for that again," said Esselink, who joined United in the summer."I think as a team we are capable of good things. We showed we can be part of these competitions and that we can compete with these kinds of teams. "That's something we can be proud of and have to strive for again until the end of the season."

'One of the most exciting nights at Easter Road in years'

We asked for your views on Hibs' pulsating extra-time win over Partizan Belgrade to reach the Conference League play-off are some of your comments:Gary: A bit like Tina Turner, Hibs don't like to do things easy, they like to do things hard!John: I need a lie down. If i was not already grey and balding I would be after last night. What a rollercoaster of a night, team spirt and never-say-die attitude, the boys showed great self belief. As for Kieron Bowie's goal, eat your heart out I'm glad Jordan Smith redeemed himself with some brilliant saves in the second half. Bowie and Josh Mulligan both outstanding, but all in all excellent Hibs who never gave up and ran themselves into the ground. They've made me proud yet Wowie Bowie, the guy is unplayable, and his special goal gave Hibs belief after losing two despicable goals. Great team effort to make the Unbelievable night at Easter Road. Smith hands them two goals, Bowie scores a goal of a lifetime. Then both teams go toe to toe in a pulsating match which left everyone shattered in the stands. But we are through to the next round. Well done Hibs have ridden their luck in this tie but no one can doubt the character of the group. One of the most exciting nights at Easter Road in Genius, sheer genius. Bowie has the potential to become one of the truly great centre forwards. Icing on the cake of a team performance filled with passion commitment and promise of much more to come. Even our goalie came good second half and extra time with tie-saving stops. Great time to support the Hibees.

Martin on Dessers injury, 'outside noise' & shots faced

Russell Martin has been speaking to the media before Rangers face Alloa Atheltic in the Premier Sports Cup this are the key lines from the Ibrox boss:The knee injury suffered by Cyriel Dessers in midweek as not as bad as first feared. The striker is "still stiff and sore" but could be fit to face Club Brugge on Tuesday reports Jefte is poised for a £6m move, external to Palmeiras: "I think the club will update you as and when it becomes something. He's in this morning. I guess that's all I can give you as the manager right now."On links to Real Betis defender Nobel Mendy:, external "He doesn't play for us, so I can't tell you anything about him. I've never met a kid, never spoke to him in my life. So, yeah, I don't really know."Martin won't "make 11 changes" but is set to shuffle the team for the Alloa tie, which is one Rangers "want to win but also have to balance". He says: "We had five games in 14 days. Some of the guys played a lot of minutes. So it's a chance for some people to get on the pitch."On Rangers' Scottish Cup defeat to lower-league Queen's Park last season: "It's completely gone. Some of them [the players] are probably part of that. I don't see any benefit in me bringing it up."After struggling to break down Dundee's low block in the 1-1 draw last weekend, Rangers have "done a lot of work on that since and hopefully you'll see that tomorrow".On criticism of Rangers' early-season performances, Martin is keen to block out "outside noise". He adds: "When you come and work for a big club like this, you have to accept that there's going to be so many opinions, ex-players, supporters, but we have to just focus on what we can focus on. So it really doesn't affect, or it shouldn't affect what we're doing here."Martin says he was speaking to a member of the maintenance staff who said, "We are turning the tank around gaffer" and that's exactly how he feels about the "loved" that the players were frustrated with some of the aspects of the performance in Plzen "because I think their understanding is growing. Their belief in what they're doing is growing. And at some point, it will all really pay off for them".On Rangers conceding 97 shots in their opening six games, Martin is "not happy" with it but says "perspective and context" is adds: "I got made aware of it this week by the analysts who then did a real detailed breakdown of it. So over half the shots were from well outside the box. The two games that we've given away too many chances are Panathinaikos and Plzen, and we're playing two teams away from home in Europe. They're 2-0 and 3-0 down and committing numbers forward that we haven't usually seen them doing. So we can definitely negate that and stop that."Martin has "no problem" with Andy Halliday criticising his tactics: "I like Andy, I regard him as a really good ex-team-and a good person. But when you work in the media, you have to give an opinion, right? Although I never have said we're going to play an inverted full-back, so I have told him that."
