Tron: Catalyst review - I'm sorry I haven't a CLU

As a new movie prepares for launch, the latest attempt to adapt Tron into video game form comes with a very interesting and purposeful glitch.
Tron has always seemed like a franchise on the edge of greatness. The original 1982 movie was a hugely important milestone in the evolution of computer-generated imagery, but it wasn't really that great a film. Likewise, Tron: Legacy is most fondly remembered for its amazing soundtrack, rather than anything that actually happened in it.
Naturally, there's been many video game adaptations over the year, with two separate waves around the time of the two movies and an unconnected 2003 first person shooter from the now sadly deceased Monolith Productions.
The most recent tie-in was low-key visual novel Tron: Identity in 2023, from Thomas Was Alone developer Bithell Games. Despite being a small indie studio, the team was also responsible for the only John Wick game so far – which we loved but nobody else seemed to. Tron: Catalyst takes an equally daring approach to its subject matter, but this time the gamble hasn't paid off.
The unavoidable problem for all the modern Tron games is that Legacy was a much less visually interesting movie than the original, with an almost monochrome colour scheme and less fantastical costumes and designs. New film Ares, to which this is only nominally connected, is set in the real world and yet still everything looks bleak and dark, which really doesn't seem appropriate for a concept as inherently silly as Tron.
Nevertheless, designer Mike Bithell, who we had a good chat to about the game last year, does what he can, with an original story based on a different grid (aka server) than the one seen in the films. The idea is that the grid has been left alone for so long that most programs no longer really believe in humans and those that do have turned the concept into a kind of religion.
You play as a courier named Exo, who becomes involved in a plot to reset the server, caught between a dystopian police force and a growing band of resistance fighters. It's a perfectly reasonable set-up and does involve some interesting sci-fi ideas – like the super-evolved programs that have lost all connection with humanity – but the wider plot could be transposed to any other fantasy setting with very few changes needed.

The game is played from a very distant top-down view, which doesn't help with the sense of immersion or your connection to the character, and only makes the drab art design look even more uninteresting.
What makes Exo unique is that she has a bug, literally called a glitch, that lets her reset the server whenever she wants. This means starting the current chapter of the story again, while retaining any abilities you unlocked or information you didn't previously have. So, for example, if your need a code for a locked door you can go off and find it, even if that ends up altering all the guards, and then come back later and use it.
It's a very neat idea and there's always a shortcut, literally or figuratively, involved that means you don't have to repeat everything a second time. However, it never really feels like the game is making full use of the ability, as there's generally no reason to use it except when the game tells you too and nothing that surprises you with its cleverness.
The combat involves melee fighting and using the (relatively) iconic identity disc, which is basically a Frisbee. This works fine in theory but there's very little sense of feedback for your attacks and as you face down armies of respawning enemies it gets old worryingly quickly; especially as the skill tree and the ability to steal enemies' moves make little practical difference. The top-down view really doesn't help either, given how much it distances you from the action.
Combat soon becomes a chore, with too many bullet sponge opponents, while minor enemies are easily confused by level furniture. Ironically, the AI is quite glitchy and often you end up taking advantage of its brokenness to get the action over with more quickly. More Trending
The other main action element is driving a light cycle, which is fun because of how fast they are, even if there's often little room to manoeuvre. Given the original Tron included a version of what would today be recognised as the game Snake (but actually started out as a coin-op called Blockade in 1976) none of the modern Tron games have done the concept justice and while Catalyst is perhaps the best of the bunch it still feels fiddly and random.
Catalyst is quite cheap but it's also very short, at around five hours, and with no real reason to ever play it again. Annoyingly, the ending is filled with hints at a third game (since this is technically a sequel to Identity) and yet there's been no announcement so far that one is happening.
The end result is a disappointingly joyless gaming experience, whose story and characters are surprisingly uninteresting, given Bithell's talents. The gameplay doesn't take any particular advantage of the Tron setting and the whole thing is just so ugly and bland to look at. John Wick Hex was much the same, but we easily forgave that because of the fun and original gameplay, but unfortunately Tron: Catalyst doesn't have that same advantage.
In Short: A disappointingly drab Tron tie-in that wastes some interesting ideas on dull and repetitive combat and an unequally unengaging story.
Pros: The glitch concept has lots of potential, even if it's not fully realised here. For better or worse, it looks like Tron: Legacy.
Cons: The storytelling is mostly uninteresting and there's barely any resolution. Combat is dull and repetitive. Glitch gimmick is never used in any particularly clever ways. Bleak and unengaging visuals.

A new podcast series has taken a look at the disappearance of Jay Slater, who was found dead a month after going missing in Tenerife, and has spoken to key people involved More than a year on from the tragic night Jay Slater went out to a Tenerife nightclub while holidaying with mates and never came home, an inquest is set to resume into what actually happened on that fateful night, ‌ His last sighting was in the early hours, and it took almost a month for his body to be discovered. ‌ After an inquest earlier this year posed more questions than it did answers, investigative journalist Mark Williams-Thomas has delved into the case with a fresh podcast series, chatting to the Lancashire teen's family, friends, and pivotal witnesses about his mysterious vanishing act on the Spanish isle - but still looming questions remain. ‌ Jay had hit up the NRG music festival at Papagayo nightclub in Playa de las Americas on June 16 2024. He was later at an Airbnb apartment in the early hours, which turned out to be the last place he was seen before his remains were located on July 15 by a Spanish Civil Guard mountain rescue squad near Masca village. Who caught the final glimpse of Jay? Mark Williams-Thomas disclosed his conversation with Ayub Qassim, the man who leased the Airbnb, about the last time he chatted with Jay that fateful morning. ‌ Mr Qassim recounted: "He [Jay] said to me 'Pal I'm off, this woman told me I can get a bus every 10 minutes', I told him that he's mad, there's no bus that's coming here every 10 minutes, chill out for a bit and I'll drop you off later on. "He said, 'No, no I've got to go to Los Cristianos, I need to scram, I need to chip out'. There's nothing more that I could do. "I saw him walk off maybe down the steps. I maybe shut the door and said if you need me.." ‌ But Mr Williams-Thomas also disclosed that wasn't the final sighting of Jay whilst he was still alive. Moments afterwards, Jay had a conversation with a woman who managed the Airbnb property where he'd just spent the evening. The investigator approached the woman for questioning and suggested there would have been communication difficulties between them. ‌ She informed Mr Williams-Thomas that she'd directed Jay to where he could board a bus returning to southern Tenerife, after which she watched him head off up the hillside alone. "She said 10am to him and showed him where the bus stop is but it is very obvious anyway and she said that she then saw him walk off up the hill," said Mr Williams-Thomas. ‌ "If he was walking back to Los Cristianos he would have walked off that [the other] way, but for some reason he walked off up the hill. She said she didn't see him after that, he was alone, he wasn't carrying anything and he definitely wasn't with anyone else. "She said at that stage, the two black men, she believed, were inside asleep. I couldn't understand why she knew that for certain but she said they were inside and she didn't see him again." What were Jay's final movements? Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas said Jay Slater was "buzzing" and wanted to carry on partying even though his friends left, which led him to make the decision to travel far away from his hotel. He explained that the mystery of why Jay ended up so far from his lodgings in the north of Tenerife is not complicated. ‌ A post-mortem revealed that Jay had alcohol and drugs in his system before his tragic fall into a ravine. He elaborated: "Jay was still buzzing at 6am from the alcohol and drugs but his friends wanted to go home, so when Qassim told Jay that he could go back to theirs and continue partying, he jumped at the chance." ‌ The investigator said: "2.35am - Jay sent a cryptic text to a friend saying 'they've got a marker on me', the friend replied at 3am with the message 'you need to go home lad you're off your barnet'. Jay then replied 'you think I'm going home you must be disabled'. "We know that at this stage Jay was very heavily under the influence of drink and drugs and it is highly likely that some paranoia was present because his friends were saying he was not making much sense and being argumentative which was very unlike Jay." He concluded that his probe into the Airbnb stay: "It strongly rules out third party involvement (in Jay's death) from the time he was at the rental." ‌ Why weren't his friends at the inquest? Lucy Law was the first to sound the alarm when Jay vanished. The pair were mates prior to the getaway and both hail from Lancashire. In the immediate aftermath of his disappearance, she spearheaded initial search operations and provided support to the teenager's relatives upon their arrival. She was absent from the initial inquest into his death, with her family explaining she was overseas and unaware the hearing was scheduled. Bradley Hargreaves also made the journey from Lancashire to Tenerife with Jay. He possessed knowledge of Jay's final whereabouts after receiving the location from the lad himself. ‌ Bradley frequently briefed journalists throughout the hunt for Jay. He too was travelling abroad during the inquest proceedings. Brandon Hodgson was the third Lancashire pal who flew to Tenerife with Jay, and numbered amongst the final people to communicate with Jay prior to his disappearance. Investigator Mark Williams-Thomas revealed that Brandon, now 20, had been sent a message from the teenager stating: "I've started walking." ‌ Brandon is "liasing with police" following Lancashire Police involvement, though he was similarly abroad when the inquest occurred. Ayub Qassim, a fellow Briton but not a hometown friend, had extended an invitation for Jay to return to his rented Airbnb in the Tenerife mountain village of Masca on the evening before he disappeared. The 31-year-old, a convicted drug dealer who also goes by "Johnny Vegas", had permitted him to spend the night. He failed to appear at the inquest into Jay's death. ‌ Steven 'Rocky' Roccas, who was staying with Mr Qassim at the Masca Airbnb, remains shrouded in mystery as little is known about him. Met Police officers attempted to deliver a witness summons to his London address, only to discover he had moved on. During the inquest, Jay's mother Debbie Duncan made an emotional appeal to those involved to step forward. ‌ Addressing Preston Coroner's Court, she implored: "I know you have tried to locate them but how can we ever get any understanding we know he died and he had an accident but from him leaving that holiday resort to going up to there we have read their statements and we want these people to be here sat in front of us, we want to ask them questions". She continued with a heartfelt plea: "Our son went on holiday and didn't come back so there are questions we need to ask... please." What happened to the Rolex? Investigators questioned taxi drivers and bar staff working near the Papagayo Beach Club in Tenerife after a fight reportedly broke out on June 17 - the same night 19-year-old Jay Slater was partying there. During the altercation, a high-end Rolex watch was allegedly stolen. ‌ Although there was speculation linking Jay to the theft, police never found any evidence to support this theory. Despite the lack of proof, rumours continued to circulate, raising questions around the circumstances of Jay's disappearance. His mother, Debbie Duncan, strongly denied any suggestion that her son was involved in the theft, calling the accusation a 'vile rumour.' However, during the inquest, it was revealed that Jay admitted stealing a £12,000 Rolex and was pictured with knives before he was found dead in Tenerife last June. Between 5:03am and 5:52am on the morning Jay vanished, a message was sent from his phone saying: "Just took a £12k Rolly off some **** off to get 10 quid for it now." The inquest heard Jay sent a message to witness Josh Forshaw where he said: "Ended up getting thrown out with two Mali kids, just took an AP [expensive watch strap] off somebody and was on the way to sell it." ‌ Josh told the hearing via videolink that Jay revealed he was planning to sell the strap for "10 quid" - a slang term for £10,000. But the whereabouts of the Rolex is still unknown, as it was never found. Why did he have knives? Shortly before his death, Jay also sent Josh Forshaw a photo of himself with "knives down his trousers". He captioned the image "in case it kicks off". Josh said he didn't inform Spanish police about the image. It wasn't until he returned home to the UK that he reported it to Lancashire Police. The inquest heard no explanation has been offered or uncovered as to why Jay had the knives or believed anything would "kick off". ‌ Why were his friends worried? The court was told that, at 2.39am on the morning the teenager vanished, he sent a worrying message that persuaded a concerned friend to ask him to "come home". Jay wrote: "They've got a marker on me." The friend replied: "You need to get home lad, you're off your barnet." TV sleuth Mark Williams-Thomas, who interviewed Qassim, said that he claimed to have offered Jay a lift back to his hotel after he slept, but was turned down as he was hungry and "wanted some scran". ‌ Why did he walk home? Mr Williams-Thomas, who helped expose Jimmy Savile's vile sex crimes after the TV presenter's death, revealed that Qassim said that Jay had been eager to leave the Airbnb on waking up the next morning and a neighbour had told him about a bus that could take him back. He said: "Qassim said to him 'Chill, mate, I'll drop you off later, when I wake up' but he said Jay said 'nah, I need some scran, I'm hungry'. "Jay said he had been told by the woman the bus to Los Cristianos was every ten minutes and Qassim said there was no bus and added 'Do what you like' before going to sleep." Jay was last heard from around 8:30 BST that morning, when he called Miss Law and told her he was lost and had 1% battery on his phone before the call cut out.

Brilliant rewrite of Shakey: Hamlet, at Buxton Opera House, reviewed

'There is good music, bad music, and music by Ambroise Thomas,' said Emmanuel Chabrier, but then, Chabrier said a lot of things. I adore Chabrier – who couldn't love the man who wrote España and turned Tristan und Isolde into a jaunty quadrille? – but it doesn't do to take him too literally. Thomas ended his career as a notoriously crusty director of the Paris Conservatoire, and when the French musical establishment puts you on a pedestal younger composers invariably start hurling the merde. Scraps of Thomas's music survive in all sorts of odd corners (a snippet from his opera Mignon crops up in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp). I've always found it rather appealing. The Buxton International Festival's production of Thomas's 1868 tragedy Hamlet confirms that it is, indeed, extremely listenable. The libretto is based on Alexandre Dumas's version of Shakespeare, and it's calculated to turn Bard-worshippers puce. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are cut and Polonius and Horatio are barely walk-on parts. Brilliantly, Thomas and his librettists Carré and Barbier also rewrite the ending so the Ghost gatecrashes Ophelia's funeral like the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, while Hamlet survives to be acclaimed King. And if you think that's sacrilege, you can't have been to Stratford-upon-Avon recently. In any case, Thomas's score, which can feel a little polite on disc (think Gounod and soda), is actually very effective in the theatre. With Adrian Kelly conducting the orchestra of Opera North it's trim, it's passionate, and you still get all of old Shakey's juiciest bits: the gravediggers, the play-within-the-play and a stonking coloratura mad scene for Ophelia – sorry, Ophélie (Yewon Han). At one point in the Buxton production Hamlet – sorry, 'Amlet (Gregory Feldmann) – even addresses himself to a skull, and the fact that the director, Jack Furness, manages this without self-consciousness speaks volumes. Furness engages with Thomas's opera on its own terms, and plays it for what it is. So it's updated – suits and evening wear – but you barely notice, with the chorus gliding around like predatory caterers. Sami Fendall's set designs are minimalist (not much more than a flight of steps) but they're so skilfully lit (by Jake Wiltshire) that they evoke the whole noir-ish, shifting world of Elsinore: shadows, corridors and blasted wastes. The appearance of the Ghost (Per Bach Nissen), meanwhile, is a real coup de théâtre. The atmosphere is as compelling as it is oppressive, and with Hamlet as a sort of tormented hipster amid the upscale couture of the court, Furness lands hit after palpable dramatic hit. Certainly, Feldmann and Han seemed to be giving their all, in a pair of enormously extended and taxing leading roles. Feldmann conveys Hamlet's seesawing naivety and angst as vividly as anything you'll see at the RSC, but he's got vocal stamina too, sounding nearly as fresh at the start of the final scene as he had three hours previously. The same goes for Han's touching Ophélie. Her voice had a shaded, poignant undertow that added multiple layers to her huge, virtuosic final aria – which was received in icy silence by the Buxton audience. They're hard to please in the High Peak. Alastair Miles was a proud, oaky-sounding Claudius and Allison Cook, as Gertrude, found powerful reserves of nuance and pathos. Like everything about this production, they delivered more than the sum of their parts. The singing and the playing are also the thing in Opera Holland Park's new staging of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. Cecilia Stinton's meat-and-two-veg production doesn't spring any particular surprises, but if you like BBC period dramas you'll enjoy the tailcoats and stovepipe hats (Stinton has updated the action to the era of Walter Scott). Three graves dominate the front of the stage, to remind you that this is not – despite the evidence of the costumes – a revival of Oliver!. OHP does have one killer card to play. This company has always excelled at casting, and pretty much everyone here is the genuine bel canto article, pouring out those long aching melodies at fever heat. In fact for large parts of the evening Morgan Pearse, as the heartless Enrico, sounds even sexier and more lustrous than Jose de Eca (as a Heathcliff-like Edgardo) – though when Eca hits his full-throated stride, it's more than worth the wait. The big news, though, is Jennifer France's role debut as Lucia. It's dangerous for a critic to have too many preconceptions, so take it as you will when I say that the hushed intensity of her singing in the quiet passages and her absolute control in the mad scene exceeded my (high) expectations. The rest of the cast (and indeed the City of London Sinfonia under Michael Papadopoulos) were audibly inspired by France's singing, and her final scenes – bloodied, bedraggled and caked in mud – are the kind of theatre that stays with you.

Sion Thomas, 25, from Newborough, is just one year into his Level 3 Media Production (TV and Film) course at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus and has already spent five weeks working behind the scenes on a large-scale HBO/Warner Bros drama currently being filmed in North Wales. Mr Thomas said: "I'm learning how to set up the lights, how to work on the cameras, and working with the assistant directors to make sure everything's on set that needs to be for that Thomas has already spent five weeks working behind the scenes (Image: Coleg Llandrillo) "It's long hours and hard work but you're always with amazing people – people who want to work, people who want to teach you. "You've got to show what you can do, work hard and make as many connections as possible." Due to a non-disclosure agreement, he is unable to reveal the title of the production, but he describes it as a 'pretty big' Thomas (Image: Coleg Llandrillo) This is already Mr Thomas' second professional experience in TV since starting the course last September. Earlier this year, he worked as a production runner on Ar Led, an S4C show produced by Osprey Television, which he secured through college connections. He found out about the HBO opportunity through Skills Cymru and credits Coleg Llandrillo for helping him launch his Thomas getting to grips with the equipment (Image: Coleg Llandrillo) Mr Thomas said: "I wouldn't be where I am now if I hadn't come to college. "It's a good course to go on because you can get a lot of opportunities, and great fun as well. "It's informative and I've had great tutors. "They've helped me out quite a bit – they've been great giving me flexibility with deadlines and things like that, because of the opportunity they'd given me to work on an actual production." Before returning to education, Mr Thomas spent a decade working in a builders' merchant. He said college gave him the direction and skills he needed to break into the industry. Mr Thomas said: "It was one of my tutors who told me about the opportunity at Osprey TV, and I also contacted Skills Cymru through college. "For me, the highlight was probably making the projects. "I'm more of a hands-on type of person so I enjoyed the practical side the most, but it was also very interesting doing the research side as well, learning about how pre-production influences the production and post-production, and how everything comes together." He is now applying for an apprenticeship with Warner Bros and has set his sights on a long-term career behind the camera. Mr Thomas said: "My plan is to work my way up through the ranks of a camera department. "Director of photography is the dream but you have to work hard to get there, so we'll see what the future holds." Hannah Owens, creative media lecturer at Coleg Llandrillo, said: "He came back into learning with drive and commitment and we believe he's a great example of success in further education and making the right steps into a career in media."
