Railways announce fare rationalisation from July 1 after five-year gap
There will be no change in suburban single journey fares or season tickets for both suburban and non-suburban routes.
For ordinary non-AC classes on non-suburban trains, Second Class fares have been increased by half a paisa per kilometre, with no change applicable for travel up to 500 km. Beyond this threshold, the increase will be ₹5 for distances between 501 and 1,500 km, ₹10 for distances between 1,501 and 2,500 km, and ₹15 for distances between 2,501 and 3,000 km. Sleeper Class and First Class fares will also see an increase of 0.5 paisa per kilometre.
In the case of Mail and Express trains (non-AC), fares for Second Class and First Class passengers have been hiked by one paisa per kilometre.
For AC classes in Mail and Express trains, fares will rise by two paise per kilometre across all categories — AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier and 3-Economy, AC 2-Tier, and AC First/Executive Class/Executive Anubhuti.
The revision will also apply to premier and special trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, AC Vistadome coaches, Anubhuti coaches, and ordinary non-suburban services in accordance with the revised class-wise fare structure.
Ancillary charges such as reservation fees, superfast surcharges, and others remain unchanged. GST will continue to be levied as per the applicable rules, the Indian Railways spokesperson said.
The Ministry has issued directives to all zonal railways for the smooth implementation of the revised fare structure. Zonal railways have also been instructed to update fare displays at all stations.
According to data available with the Ministry, Indian Railways carried 715 crore passengers during the financial year April 2024–March 2025. Of these, 81 crore passengers travelled in AC and Sleeper Class, while 634 crore travelled in the unreserved category. Passenger revenue during the period stood at ₹75,750 crore.
The revision marks the first hike in train fares in five years. M. Jamshed, former Member (Traffic) of the Railway Board, described the increase of one to two paise per kilometre as 'a rationalisation that was long overdue'.
'This hike shall contribute an additional ₹1,500 crore to ₹1,600 crore in passenger revenues. Similar fare hikes took place in 2013, 2014, and in 2020,' Mr. Jamshed told The Hindu.
He, however, noted that Indian Railways continues to face challenges in achieving financial sustainability. 'FY2024–25 has closed with total earnings below the budgetary estimates. Passenger revenue did increase to ₹75,457 crore but remained below the projected ₹80,000 crore,' he said.
'With freight incremental loading of 26 million tonnes — from 1,591 to 1,617 million tonnes — the revenue generation was marginal,' Mr. Jamshed added. 'Stiffer targets for FY2025–26, including ₹92,000 crore in passenger revenue, are unlikely to be achieved.'

The Ganpati Special trains will be running across the Konkan Railway across places like Kolad, Indapur, Mangaon, Goregaon Road, Veer, Sape Warmne, Karanjadi, Vinhere, Diwankhavati, Kalambani Budruk, Khed, Anjani, Chiplun, Kamathe, Sawarda, and Aravali Road. Other train trips will include Sangameshwar Road, Ratnagiri, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon Road, Kankavali, Sindhudurg, Kudal, Zarap, Sawantwadi Road, Madure, Thivim, Karmali, Madgaon Jn, Karwar, Gokama Road, Kumta, Murdeshwar, Mookambika Road, Kundapura, Udupi, Mulki and Surathkal. The auspicious occasion of Ganpati Puja will be celebrated from 27 August 2025 to 6 September 2025. According to the Indian Railways, the Ganpati special trains will be running from 11 August 2025, with the services increased progressively as the dates of the occasion come closer. The Ministry highlighted that the detailed schedule of the Ganpati special trains is now available on the official IRCTC website, the RailOne mobile application, and computerised PRS. "Indian Railways remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and convenient travel experiences, especially during festivals when demand is significantly higher," said the Ministry in its statement.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has unveiled the Nusuk Umrah service, a new digital platform for international pilgrims. According to the Ministry, through Nusuk Umrah, Muslims outside the Kingdom can apply directly for Umrah visas and book their pilgrimage services electronically. Nusuk Umrah eliminates intermediaries and offers a comprehensive suite of options, allowing pilgrims to choose integrated packages or select individual services such as visas, accommodation, transportation, cultural tours, and support services. Users can also customise packages to meet their specific needs. The platform aims to improve service quality and enrich the pilgrim experience, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Apart from the website, Nusuk Umrah services can be accessed through mobile apps, on iOS, Android and Huawei platforms. Nusuk Umrah features a modern, multilingual interface in seven languages and is fully integrated with relevant government systems to ensure a seamless digital experience, the ministry said. 'Nusuk Umrah' provides multiple payment options and covers all stages from application to visa issuance, the ministry said. Nusuk Umrah is a new option for international Umrah pilgrims, complementing existing channels like accredited agents. The launch of the service is part of the ministry's efforts to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 by hosting a greater number of Muslims and providing high-quality and convenient services that enhance the Hajj journey, SPA said. Saudi Arabia, which is home to Makkah and Madinah, two of the holiest sites of Islam, sees millions of pilgrims from around the world every year for Hajj and Umrah. According to the data from Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Statistics, the Kingdom welcomed more than 15 million pilgrims for Umrah in the first quarter of 2025. Out of this, 6.5 million pilgrims came from abroad, while another 8.7 million performed Umrah domestically, the data showed. In 2025, Saudi Arabia also welcomed more than 1.6 million pilgrims from 180 nations for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Railways to operate 12,000 special trains during Deepavali, Chhath festivals
Indian Railways has decided to operate more than 12,000 special trains for the convenience of passengers during Deepavali and Chhath festivals. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that after discussions with Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, MP Sanjay Jaiswal, Union Minister Lalan Singh, and MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, it was decided to make special arrangements for the upcoming Deepavali and Chhath festivals. He emphasised that passengers should also be facilitated during their return journey. 'After consultations with senior public representatives, it was decided that over 12,000 special trains will be run for Deepavali and Chhath. At the same time, due care will be taken to ensure passengers face no difficulties during their return travel,' Mr. Vaishnaw said. He said passengers undertaking onward journeys between October 13 and 26 and return journeys between November 17 and December 1 would be offered a 20% discount on return tickets. In addition, four new Amrit Bharat Express trains would be introduced from Gaya to Delhi, Saharsa to Amritsar, Chhapra to Delhi, and Muzaffarpur to Hyderabad. A new circuit train, covering important sites related to Lord Buddha and catering especially to middle-class families, would also be launched, covering Vaishali, Hajipur, Sonepur, Patna, Rajgir, Gaya and Koderma, Mr. Vaishnaw announced. The Buxar–Lakhisarai rail section would be expanded into a four-line corridor, enabling more train operations. A ring railway system would be developed around Patna. Sultanganj and Deoghar would be connected by rail. A new train service would also run between Patna and Ayodhya. A washing pit facility would be set up at Laukaha Bazar, and work would be carried out on several newly approved road overbridges in Bihar, Mr. Vaishnaw said.
