Steelers acquire Tyreek Hill in exchange for standout pass rusher in wild trade prediction

USA Today11 hours ago
Less than three weeks away from the Steelers' regular season kickoff, and we still have trade package predictions running rampant in Pittsburgh — with the latest speculation falling on Tyreek Hill's possible Steel City arrival.
Last week, Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski created several trade package predictions for the Miami Dolphins superstar wideout — and the Pittsburgh Steelers were one of just four teams to make the list, trading away one of their most underrated pass rushers and some Day 3 picks in exchange for Hill.
Here are the full details of Sobleski's projected trade package:
Steelers receive:
Dolphins receive:
It's worth noting that this trade prediction was created before edge rusher Matthew Judon signed with Miami, but Herbig's value as one of the league's most efficient pass rushers — supported by stats and analytics — could certainly be of value on the trade market.
While many speculate Hill's days as a Dolphin could be over sooner rather than later, it's unlikely the Steelers chance adding a disgruntled wide receiver after shipping away the incredibly erratic George Pickens just a few months ago.

Aaron Rodgers won't play in preseason finale, sitting entire preseason for second straight year

PITTSBURGH — On Tuesday afternoon, Aaron Rodgers was asked what he hopes to get out of the Steelers' final preseason game on Thursday in Carolina. 'Health,' Rodgers said. 'Everybody getting through healthy. Most important thing.' That will be no problem for Rodgers. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after practice that the 41-year-old quarterback will not play in the preseason finale against the Panthers. This comes after Tomlin held Rodgers out for the first two preseason games. Rodgers did not suit up for a preseason game last summer either, his second year with the New York Jets, when he was working his way back from a season-ending Achilles injury suffered in the 2023 regular-season opener. In 2023, Rodgers took the field for 10 snaps in the Jets' final preseason game, against the Giants. That's the only preseason game he's participated in since 2018. Advertisement However, this will be the first time a healthy starting quarterback will not take the field for a preseason game under Tomlin. (Last year, Russell Wilson missed the three exhibition games due to a calf injury.) Considering Rodgers age' and his experience, the Steelers have adjusted their approach. 'I'm comfortable with what I'm seeing out here,' Tomlin said.' Obviously, if I weren't, I would be playing him.' Rodgers' Steelers debut will have to wait until he meets the New York Jets in Week 1 of the regular season. Outside of practice, the closest he got to a game-real environment was during the Steelers' joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Rodgers explained earlier in camp that defenses are typically vanilla in the preseason. On the flip side, during joint practices, teams are much more willing to show exotic pressures or disguised coverages. 'That was good for us to get some work in,' Rodgers said. 'I felt like there's a lot of film to correct. Failure is always best this time of year to learn from and to be able to let the coaches go through or let Arthur [Smith] go through.' Rodgers said that in the joint practice, the Steelers started strong by winning the Seven Shots drills, which features seven chances from the 2-yard line, against the Bucs. Rodgers also felt the Steelers' offense 'got after them pretty good' during a third-down period. However, the QB also said the Bucs out-performed the Steelers during the team run period and during the two-minute drills. 'The thing I loved is that there weren't fans there, so they felt comfortable bringing a lot of different pressures,' Rodgers said. 'I thought it was good work for us in the protection game, especially.' In addition to Rodgers, Tomlin said that he will hold out defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, outside linebacker T.J. Watt and wide receiver DK Metcalf on Thursday. That means several prominent Steelers will be making their preseason debuts, including veteran defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay, members of a revamped secondary. Advertisement 'Everyone else is under consideration,' Tomlin said. 'They're preparing as if they're going to play. There are a lot of variables in it. Who's playing for Carolina and things of that nature that might provide worthy competition. As I sit here today, all healthy, outside of the four that I mentioned, are preparing and scheduled to play. We'll get to the stadium, and we'll see what's happening on the other side, and we may alter that in some ways. But I'm hopeful that we get an opportunity to play, particularly in the secondary.' Rodgers, Heyward, Watt and Metcalf will sit out the Steelers' preseason finale

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers' first official snaps with the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to wait until Week 1. Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that the four-time MVP, along with All-Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward, star outside linebacker T.J. Watt and wide receiver DK Metcalf, will not play against Carolina in Pittsburgh's preseason finale on Thursday. Everyone else on the roster that's healthy, including defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay, running back Jaylen Warren and tight end Pat Freiermuth, could see the field in Carolina. All were part of a sizeable group that watched Pittsburgh's first two exhibitions from the sideline. Yet with more than two weeks to prepare for the opener on the road at the New York Jets, Tomlin sees an opportunity for the majority of his team to knock off some rust before the games start counting. The 41-year-old Rodgers has said throughout training camp that he'd be more than willing to take the field. Tomlin said he's seen enough progress over the last month that there's no need to put Rodgers in harm's way. 'I'm comfortable with what I'm seeing out here, obviously,' Tomlin said. "If I weren't, I'd be playing him.' Asked Tuesday what he wants to see coming out of Carolina, Rodgers repeated the word 'health' multiple times. The decision not to have Rodgers take the field for at least a series during the preseason is an unusual step for Tomlin, who is entering his 19th season with the Steelers. Longtime Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger always saw some level of game action in August, and each of the Week 1 starters since Roethlisberger's January 2022 retirement — Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett and Justin Fields — all made at least a token appearance, if not more, in the preseason. Like that trio, Rodgers is in his first year in Pittsburgh. Unlike that trio, Rodgers is the league's oldest active player and still less than 24 months removed from an Achilles tendon injury that cut short his initial season with the Jets in 2023 after just four snaps. There's a chance Pittsburgh's new-look secondary could play together for the first time against the Panthers. The Steelers added cornerbacks Ramsey and Slay — who have a combined 13 Pro Bowl appearances and two Super Bowl rings between them — in the offseason to join a group that includes Joey Porter Jr. and DeShaun Elliott. The group has been dominant at times during training camp, but save for a joint scrimmage with Tampa Bay last week, has yet to see the field together against an opposing team. That could change on Thursday, though Tomlin indicated plans may change if the Panthers decide to sit quarterback Bryce Young and running back Chuba Hubbard, among others. 'There's a collective component, a communication component, a coordination component to what they do, and if they get the opportunity to get some snaps against some capable people in the stadium, we'd appreciate it,' Tomlin said. While Heyward will not play, he did return to practice on Tuesday for the first time in nearly two weeks. The 35-year-old four-time All-Pro has been in attendance but not participating on the field as he seeks a bump in pay following a bounce-back season in which he collected eight sacks following an injury-marred 2023. Asked if Heyward's familiar No. 97 being on the field signals a shift, Tomlin deferred to Heyward. Heyward went to the trainer's room after practice and did not speak to reporters. ___ AP NFL:

Cameron Heyward proves yet again that all hold-ins must eventually end

Another day, another hold-in ends. Like they all do. Like they all will. That's the biggest problem with a hold-in. Yes, the player avoids the daily training-camp fines, which for many players can't be waived by the team. At some point, however, it's time to go to work. That's the reality of being under contract. The contract eventually will be honored, by preparing for and playing in games. While a player who cites an injury (real, embellished, or fabricated) can milk the absence into the regular season, Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward didn't claim to be injured. He wasn't practicing because, as he explained it to reporters, he's looking for his contract to be addressed. 'When I signed [last year], I told them, you know, when I have an All-Pro year, expect me to come back,' Heyward said last week. 'I think everybody giggled a little bit, but in my head, I used it as motivation.' They giggled, perhaps because he had just signed a three-year contractual commitment. They giggled, perhaps because they knew that, even though he vowed to come back after he has an All-Pro year (which happened), there was nothing in the deal that required them to give him another penny. No incentives. No escalators. Nothing. That's the difference between Heyward and a player like Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons. Parsons signed a slotted, non-negotiable deal as the 12th overall pick in the 2021 draft. The Cowboys had the right under the Collective Bargaining Agreement to exercise a fifth-year option, at a predetermined salary. Parsons negotiated, as it relates to his total pay, nothing. Heyward, as a long-time veteran, negotiated and signed a new contract less than a year ago. He could have allowed his contract to expire. While riding first-team All-Pro distinction, he could have gotten more, from the Steelers or from another team. He took the bird in the hand, with no promise of two in the bush. Or anything else. The hold-in hadn't gotten him a revised deal. At some point, it was time to get ready for Week 1. That time isn't a few days before the regular-season opener. The player needs to be ready to play. For Heyward, the moment arrived today, with roughly three weeks to prepare. The Steelers could still decide to change his contract. They're not required to. And we'll find out soon whether it happens. The Steelers have a longstanding rule of not doing contracts once the season begins. Regardless of whether a new deal happens, the hold-in was always going to end. They all do. Except when the player, like Parsons, is practicing not in a stated effort to get a new deal, but because he is injured. Or, as the case may be, 'injured.'
