Former foster carer guilty of years of 'cruel' child abuse against four youngsters
Gillian Murray was found guilty of abuse against at least four children in her care with the court hearing evidence of other incidents against more children. A former foster carer has been found guilty of subjecting at least four vulnerable children to prolonged abuse over a 16-year period. Gillian Murray, 59, was convicted at Edinburgh Sheriff Court of cruel and unnatural treatment towards children in her care between 1995 and 2011. The abuse took place at her home in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian. The court heard harrowing evidence detailing how Murray repeatedly mistreated children entrusted to her care. One young boy, aged between five and seven, was forced to eat his meals alone on the floor, had food withheld from him, and was denied access to other parts of the house — including the bathroom — leading to episodes of bedwetting. She further isolated the child by refusing to provide toys or allow him to play outside. Another child, a boy aged between six months and five years, endured similar mistreatment. Murray shouted at him regularly and dressed him in clothing so ill-fitting it caused injury. Two other children were also subjected to neglect, with Murray failing to comfort them when distressed or to keep them clean. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Evidence from a former neighbour revealed further instances of abuse involving unidentified children. Murray was seen forcing children outside inappropriately dressed for the weather and then refusing them entry back into the home. Murray was sentenced to a Community Payback Order requiring 300 hours of unpaid work on Thursday. Neil Almond, interim Procurator Fiscal for Lothian and Borders, said: 'Gillian Murray was responsible for the care of vulnerable children and trusted to look after them. She instead contributed to their trauma through her cruel and abusive treatment. 'This prosecution would not have been possible without the victims reporting their experiences and giving evidence. 'The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service is committed to robustly prosecuting non-recent allegations of abuse of children. 'I would urge anyone who has experienced similar offending to come forward and report it, regardless of how long ago the offences took place. 'You will be listened to and supported as we use all the tools available to us to establish a public record of the abuse experienced and the harm caused.'

WhatsApp deletes 6,800,000 scam accounts offering fake jobs and products
Over 6.8 million accounts have been scrubbed off of WhatsApp as part of a crackdown on 'criminal scam centres', most of them in South East Asia. Meta is working to target too-good-to-be-true offers and unsolicited texts unleashed to steal people's personal information or money. Scrapping scam accounts is just one of the measures the parent company announced earlier this week. A new tool is also being rolled out on WhatsApp to help customers spot any signs of fraud – but experts argue that much more is needed to protect people. The truth is that fraudsters are working around the clock to perfect their techniques and as a result, scams are becoming more sophisticated by the minute. Fake recruiters reaching out with a job offer or opportunity is one of the most popular scams to look out for. Often getting in touch completely unsolicited, they try to bait jobseekers with false promises of high pay and competitive benefits. As an excuse to extort money, they may request payment for training, and if it is information they are after, they will try and persuade people to share bank accounts and other details. Another successful fraud is the 'fake giveaway'. Texts with links for free products or vouchers regularly circulate WhatsApp. They typically lead to a malicious website and ask people to complete a survey before attempting to gain your personal and financial information to 'post your prize'. In addition to banning the scam accounts, WhatsApp is also rolling out a single new feature to help protect users. More Trending Group messaging: WhatsApp is launching a new safety overview that will show when someone who is not in the user's contacts adds them to a new group you may not recognize. It will include key information about the group and tips to stay safe. From there, people can exit the group without ever having to look at the chat. Individual messaging: While this is not a feature yet, Meta said it is testing new approaches to alerting people to pause before engaging with a user not in the contacts. UK consumer rights organisation Which? welcomed the announcement, but said: 'Meta must do much more to stop these criminals across all its platforms.'
