Polyphia's Tim Henson teases new 8-string meisterworks that could require a whole new guitar to play along
If you thought that Polyphia's current album, Remember That You Will Die already featured enough guitar experimentation, then get ready to start prising open your mind to what they have planned next.
Speaking with guitarist Tim Henson at NAMM 2025, Guitar World went in deep with the unconventional virtuoso to find out what's ahead and how they're aiming to bring their hybrid musicality and shred to an even wider audience.
'It's heavy,' Henson explained. 'That's exciting for us, and I think last year was really eye-opening for us in terms of how we should start composing for the live performance.'
And it seems such moves could involve a little less of the nylon-stringed wondery that has caught fans attention. Although claiming that he doesn't want to 'tone it down in the technicality department,' he does want to 'make sure that it can work and just be executed really well.'
'Playing a nylon-string to 80,000 people is a little like… when you think of a nylon-string, you think of a dude in a coffee shop, right?' he explains. 'So, it's a little disconnect there. We're excited to really hone that in and really make the music bigger for that kind of audience now,' and that would appear to point towards a whole new range of guitars purely to get the sound that they require.
Henson has teased the use of even more distortion, further extended-range models and even the as-yet-unannounced possibility of entirely new Ibanez signature guitars for launch alongside their next opus.
'[There's] lots of eight-string. We're playing baritones and stuff, too. We're just making new guitars that don't exist for the sole purpose of writing something really, really cool with it, so that if you want to learn it, you're gonna have no choice but to buy that guitar!,' he jokes.
Or at least we think he's joking…
Previously Henson had been seen rocking a new white colorway on both a six– and 8-string version of his Ibanez TOD builds, giving rise to speculation about the prospect of an even more, high-spec Prestige line coming soon.

How to access the Battlefield 6 open beta, how to preload, and when it starts

EA is running the playtest for two weekends, but there are a handful of ways to get two days of early access. If you signed up for Battlefield Labs before July 31, you'll automatically be granted access to the early bird days. There was also a chance to get a beta code via Twitch drops during last week's reveal streams, but that window's closed now. The only surefire way to get early access at this point is to sign up for EA Play Pro, EA's subscription service that lets you play all its new games on day one for $17 per month. That's an extremely steep price if you're only after those two extra days of BF6 beta, but if you've been meaning to play some other EA games anyway, then the option's there. How to access and preload the Battlefield 6 beta Whether you're playing in early access or waiting for the public beta, you'll access the Battlefield 6 open beta the same way. Here are the direct links to the beta on every platform: Steam EA App PS5 Xbox On top of the good news that Battlefield 6 won't require the EA App on Steam, you also won't need it to play the open beta. Just head to the BF6 Steam page and look for the "Join the playtest" button. If you're a BF Labs member who played through the EA App, you should probably install the beta there to ensure you don't run into issues. Preloading is live on all platforms, so there's no reason not to save some time by installing the ~40 GB package. You can even run it early to optimize shaders and tune your graphics settings ahead of time, but there's nothing else to do in the menus until the main event. Battlefield 6 beta dates The BF6 beta goes live at the same time on all platforms starting Thursday, August 7. EA has yet to say the exact hour that the beta begins, so we're left to guess it'll be sometime in the morning/early afternoon. Weekend 1 August 7 - August 8 (Early access) August 9 - August 10 (Open) Weekend 2 August 14 - August 17 (Open) This is purely speculation, but we could see an extra day added to either beta weekend if EA's servers crumble under the weight of BF6's rapidly expanding hype. After all, Battlefield has a long history of launching with connectivity issues, though one would hope Battlefield Studio's extensive Labs playtesting means it's better prepared. Battlefield 6's full launch is coming on October 10. EA hasn't announced any beta dates beyond the ones listed here, but we'll let you know if they decide to run any more before launch. All Battlefield 6 beta rewards and how to earn them You can earn a handful of rewards for participating in the Battlefield 6 beta, which will carry over into the full game when it launches in October. There are two different sets of rewards to earn over the two beta weekends, so you'll have to play during both to earn everything. Presumably, since the first weekend's rewards are primarily based on your account level, you can make progress towards these during the two-day early access period, too. By watching any Drops-enabled streamer during the two open beta weekends (August 9-10 and 14-17), you can unlock these Battlefield 6 Twitch Drops: Watch for 1 hour: Mimic weapons package Watch for 2 hours: Landslide soldier skin Watch for 3 hours: Shattered vehicle skin Watch for 4 hours: Imperial soldier skin All you need to do to start earning these beta Twitch Drops is link your EA and Twitch accounts, and then watch creators streaming Battlefield 6 when the beta is active. Once you've earned a reward, it'll appear in your Drops Inventory. Redeem them here, and you'll be given a code to enter over on the Battlefield code redemption page. After adding yet another tiny map, Battlefield 6 players are rightfully clowning on its definition of 'all-out warfare'

As weekend two of the Battlefield 6 beta gets into swing, folks are increasingly skeptical of all these small to medium maps. The lack of a truly "big" Battlefield map was the loudest criticism coming out of last weekend's playtest, and the only new map added this week isn't squashing worries that Battlefield 6 is prioritizing the Call of Duty crowd: Empire State, an infantry-only map with zero vehicles, is the smallest one we've seen yet. The cries for clear skies and open ranges haven't inspired an official response from Battlefield Studios, but DICE lead producer David Sirland assured fans that "large maps exist" earlier this week. "Speed is a factor of map size. We picked these maps to make sure we hit the full-octane version of Battlefield on the head—and made everyone see we can handle that too," Sirland wrote on X. "Large maps exist, and the tempo scales accordingly; you'll be able to see soon enough!" Even still, the way Battlefield 6 labels its modes has some questioning if EA has a different definition of "large" than the rest of us. The new Attack & Defend playlist, consisting of Rush and Breakthrough, is listed as "large-scale battles," despite Rush's cramped, aggressively linear 12v12 map layouts. That disparity is already inspiring some decent memes: "Leaked" images of new Battlefield 6 maps that are literally just Call of Duty maps. Devs have confirmed they are adding another large scale map this weekend from r/Battlefield New Medium-Large Scale Map Leaked Before Release from r/Battlefield Sirland's comments about large maps prompted me to take a second look at BF Studios' official website to determine how much large-scale Battlefield-ing we should actually expect from its nine launch maps, judged by how many vehicles are present. Fewer generally means smaller. Here's what I've got: Siege of Cairo: Small, infantry-focused, tanks only Iberian Offensive: Small, tanks and jeeps Empire State: Small, infantry-only, no vehicles Liberation Peak: Medium, all vehicles Operation Firestorm: Medium or large (depending on how closely it sticks to the BF3 version), all vehicles Saints Quarter: Small, infantry-only, no vehicles New Sobek City: Described as "all-out war across construction sites and massive sand dunes" with jeeps, tanks, helicopters, but no jets Mirak Valley: Described as "the largest map at launch", all vehicles Manhattan Bridge: Described as "close-quarters" with helicopters, but no mention of jeeps or tanks By my count, that means Battlefield 6 will have just three maps that capture the full experience of transports, tanks, helicopters, and jets at launch. Personally I think that's a bummer, because it also suggests only three maps have a large enough footprint for jets to even make sense. Hopefully, New Sobek City will still feel large with only helicopters, because the more I play Cairo, Empire State, and Iberian Offensive, the more I see myself filtering those out of my regular rotation in the full game. Since most people probably aren't going to comb over official map descriptions before launch, I suspect we're barreling toward a nasty collision of expectations vs reality come October 10. Longtime fans want and expect Battlefield 6 to be huge the majority of the time, and I don't think that's what we're going to get.

Viva Las Vegas! We're getting a Fallout Season 2 teaser at Gamescom

Fallout fans may have a long wait before we get any kind of news about Fallout 5, but at least there's a little irradiated goodness coming our way soon. Quite soon! As in, next week: we're getting some sort of Fallout Season 2 teaser at Gamescom, which starts on Tuesday, August 19, with Opening Night Live. "Time for a little road trip," the official Fallout series account tweeted today. "Season Two is coming but first: a quick pit stop @gamescom #OpeningNightLive on Tuesday. Bring a Stimpak." After a few delays, including one due to the Los Angeles wildfires in January, Fallout Season 2 wrapped production in May. Returning this season are our trio of wanderers: Walton Goggins as wasteland mercenary The Ghoul, Ella Purnell as Vault Dweller Lucy, and Aaron Moten as Brotherhood of Steel knight Maximus, who at the end of Season 1 were pursuing the devious Hank (Kyle MacLachlan) across the desert toward New Vegas. That's got fans excited to see some familiar sights from the best Fallout game ever made, and leaked photos and videos from production have already given us a peek at the Ultra Lux, Dinky the T-Rex, and the Lucky 38 Casino. Mr. House appeared in a pre-war scene in Season 1, so will we see him again in Vegas in Season 2? I'd put all my chips on yes. Plus, Deathclaws. There's gonna be Deathclaws.
