It's rare to ride a bike that feels like a reply. The 2025 NS400Z can be categorised as one such machine. Bajaj's response to every forum post, rider rant, and reviewer nitpick is here, and boy, have they listened to us. When I first rode the biggest Pulsar yet, back in 2024, I was impressed, just like I am now. Sure, there were some niggles, and it could do with some more work, but that mouth-watering price made me glance over most of these downsides. However, I feel Bajaj learned in this process that the Indian consumer has evolved. We want the right equipment with the right machine, and it can't just be all about saving money. I also feel that the homegrown giant showed class with this move, showcasing respect to the Pulsar brand name. On the surface, it's hard to tell that the new NS400Z has changed. That's certainly how I felt when I arrived at the dealership. Bajaj has gone for refinement over reinvention, and I'm all for it. The real question is to what degree the riding experience has been altered due to the incremental changes. First, let's tackle what's new on the 2025 NS400Z.advertisementHow is it different from the first-generation NS400Z?From a design standpoint, the only thing that sets it apart is the redesigned radiator cowl, which the folks at Bajaj state has improved heat dissipation and drives hot air away from the rider's legs. There are no new colours, no new graphics, just the same in that regard, and honestly, that feels like a bit of a let down. I would've loved the Pulsar NS400Z to get the same shade of blue as the N160. Let's kick vanity aside for a minute and talk about the real meaty stuff. Bajaj has opted for sintered pads this time around to improve brake feel and durability, and the rear tyre is now wider, 150-section to be exact. The previous iteration came with a 140-section one. Both tyres are also now radial, and the 2025 NS400Z is shod in Apollo Alpha H1 units now, which again, with the aforementioned changes, should enhance overall handling. Bajaj has worked their magic in the 373cc, single-cylinder motor, one that comes from the famed older KTM 390 Duke, and also does duty on the Dominar 400. First and foremost, power figure is up from 40bhp to 43bhp, and peak output in 'Sport' mode has gone up from 9,700rpm to 10,700rpm, which is significant. Torque figure remains the same, 35Nm, but is made at 500rpm higher. The 2025 NS400Z comes with a forged piston, making for better thermal efficiency, reduced friction and should result in more durability. The internals of this engine have been rejigged, there's a revised valvetrain, cam timings have been altered, and dimensions for the intake duct are different, although the airbox remains the same as the earlier model. Most of the cycle parts pretty much remain the same, like the 43mm USD forks, rear monoshock, digital LCD, and LED lights. That's not all, though. Bajaj has collaborated with Bosch for a unique quickshifter or 'Sportshifter' in company speak, which is a sensor-less system that can only be activated in 'Sports' mode. The boffins at Pune-based company say it's based on insights gathered from rider behaviour in the aforementioned riding mode. The net result? The NS400Z's 0-60kmph time is now 2.7 seconds, which is down from 3.2 seconds. The 0-100kmph time is now 6.4 seconds, which is down from 7.5 seconds, which is fairly substantial. Top speed is up from 150kmph to 157kmph, but Bajaj has managed to keep the claimed fuel efficiency figure the same at 28kmpl. So, has it significantly changed the ride experience?What's the 2025 NS400Z like to ride?In all honesty, yes, it has. It's not a generational change, but it can be felt prominently. Wring the throttle in 'Road' mode and there's a significant shove to be had around the 5,000-6,000rpm mark. Low-end performance isn't this Pulsar's strong suit, but that addictive mid-range and impressive top-end power is genuinely astonishing. 'Rain' mode feels the most subdued, and there's an 'Off-road' mode as well, which, well, thanks Bajaj, I guess. If you're interested in the NS400Z, the most significant mode here is 'Sports'. It feels like a different motorcycle, and becomes more manic in my opinion. Also, the traction control can only be switched off in 'Sports' and 'Off-road' modes. The innovative quickshifter also works quite well, and one can go clutch-less, which comes in handy if one finds themselves in a hurry. The quality of the switchgear also feels the same as before; it feels fairly well-made, although the physical controls tend to lag a bit every once in a while. Some body panels can feel flimsy, or not up to the mark in terms of quality, but on the whole, at least for me, I don't mind at all. That's because absolute power corrupts absolutely, and that honestly feels like a fitting motto for this motorcycle. It goes like stink, and doesn't raise when you need to get it fixed, owing to the fact that it's a Bajaj. It goes fast, without having to draw attention to itself. I found people at stop lights, staring in wonderment and confusion, wondering, 'Is it modified, is it new?'.

India's electric vehicle (EV) dreams have long symbolised its aspirations for a cleaner, more self-reliant future. But today, those dreams risk stalling at the crossroads of geopolitics and supply chain fragility. With China's April 2025 export curbs on rare earth elements, a critical question looms: can India steer its EV revolution onto a resilient, independent path before it's too late? The India EV revolution, which was running in high gear until some time ago, has now been thrown into turmoil, with manufacturers slashing their EV production targets across the board. Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, the two-wheeler giants - none has been spared. For the average Indian hoping to buy an affordable EV, these disruptions could soon mean higher prices, longer wait times and dwindling options. And with this, India's ambitious goal of 30% EV penetration by 2030 now hangs in limbo. Importance of Rare Earth Elements REEs are a group of 17 metallic elements, including samarium, dysprosium, and neodymium, which are critical to modern technology. They power everything from EV motors and missile systems to smartphones and wind turbines. China has achieved near-total dominance in this sector, not just by mining these elements but by mastering the far more complex process of refining them. With an almost iron grip on global processing - controlling roughly 85% of the market - the latest curbs by the Red Dragon have restricted access to these elements, impacting not only the global defence sector but also commercial industries, such as clean energy and electric mobility. A House of Cards India's EV penetration has surged to 7.7% in 2024, a nearly fourfold jump from 1.75% in 2021. But this remarkable growth is marred by a heavy reliance on China. According to a CRISIL report, last year, India imported over 80% of its 540 tonnes of magnets, critical for manufacturing EV motors, from China. This dependency stems from the fact that domestic manufacturing has struggled to keep pace with sector demands, despite the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) push over recent years. Ironically, India holds the world's sixth-largest deposits of rare earth elements - about 6.9 million metric tonnes - but has almost no domestic magnet production. The Economic Survey 2024-25 warned that EV production requires six times more minerals than conventional vehicles, with supply chains dangerously concentrated in a handful of countries, especially China. This stark reality exposes a brutal truth: India's electrification ambitions have outpaced its supply chain resilience planning. To make matters worse, Mint reports that the embargo and subsequent import hurdles could increase costs by as much as 8%, a burden likely to be passed on to customers. For India's cost-sensitive market, especially in the two-wheeler segment, this poses an existential challenge. Supply Chain Disruption The Centre for Science and Environment's State of India's Environment 2025 report highlights that component localisation has lagged due to a weak manufacturing base. Experts agree that building a full ecosystem - from mining to magnet production - demands sustained policy support, technical capacity, and major investment. Without swift action, India remains vulnerable to external shocks and geopolitical risks. While many states have launched EV policies with strong demand incentives, few have addressed supply chain security. Most rely on the Centre, and no state mandates local sourcing of critical components like batteries or motors. The PM-EDRIVE scheme does include localisation criteria, but state policies generally focus on consumer subsidies over R&D. Maharashtra stands out as an exception. Its policy explicitly promotes supply chain resilience and circularity, allocating ₹15 crore toward R&D in sodium-ion batteries, magnet-free motors, and recycling technologies. However, these efforts are still in early stages, and their outcomes will take time to unfold. Overall, sub-national policies have yet to fully grapple with the risks posed by global supply chain disruptions. Reducing Dependency Private participation in critical mineral mining became possible only after the 2023 amendment to the Mines and Minerals Act. Until then, IREL (India) Ltd held a monopoly, with rare earths classified as atomic minerals under the Atomic Energy Act. Following the reform, the government auctioned 13 exploration blocks in March 2025. Since then, progress has begun. Vedanta's subsidiary, Hindustan Zinc, recently announced plans to mine and process neodymium, a key input for permanent magnets. Sona Comstar - India's largest importer of rare earth magnets from China and a major supplier to Tesla and Stellantis - has also declared its intention to localise production and reduce dependence on Chinese imports. However, the transition from exploration to actual production takes time. The lithium auction in Jammu & Kashmir illustrates this challenge: despite relaxed rules, both rounds failed due to limited geological data, small block sizes, and technical complexities. This gap between ambition and on-ground readiness remains a key hurdle. Still, the liberalisation of mining policy marks a crucial step toward reducing import dependence and building a resilient domestic rare earth supply chain. A Bloomberg report indicates the government may temporarily ease localisation norms to allow imports of fully-built motors. While this offers short-term relief, it does little to advance long-term atma-nirbharta. What's needed is a strategic, well-resourced response. First, KABIL's overseas mineral missions in Argentina, Australia, and Chile must be fast-tracked to shield India from future supply shocks. Second, a strong circular economy push is vital - scaling battery recycling can recover up to 90% of critical minerals like lithium and cobalt. Third, the Economic Survey 2024-25 calls for greater R&D investment in next-gen batteries like sodium-ion to further de-risk and secure supply chains, along with tech transfer agreements to share costs and diversify supply chains. Fewer EVs today, Resilience Tomorrow? The supply chain shock is already visible - Maruti has slashed production targets for its upcoming EV, an early warning sign. If rare earth shipments don't resume soon, Indian manufacturers may be forced to import fully built motors from China, raising costs by 5-10%. Ironically, this disruption may succeed where years of policy have fallen short: pushing India toward genuine automotive self-reliance. While diplomatic outreach to China is underway, it remains a short-term fix. Meanwhile, the Hon'ble Prime Minister's recent visit to Ghana set the tone with a high-stakes agreement on rare earth mineral mining - an important step toward long-term resilience. As RMI notes, India's success in renewable energy proves that self-sufficiency is achievable when backed by coherent, risk-aware policy. With global uncertainties mounting, India must accelerate efforts to localise its EV supply chain. The question isn't whether rollout will be slow - it will - but whether this crisis will finally drive the structural reforms needed to secure India's electric future.

American electric vehicle giant Tesla finally launched its first showroom in India on Tuesday (July 15). Here's revisiting an episode of Prime Video's 2022 legal drama series Guilty Minds, which followed a unique case where a fictional self-driving car manufacturer EHNO is accused of causing an accident. A teenager named Priya is going home in a self-driving car brand called EHNO. The car is programmed to stop when it senses an external stimulus. In this case, the car ferrying Priya comes to a stop when a man suddenly steps in front of it. The next moment, a speeding car comes from behind and strikes the stationary EHNO, which in turn hits the man in the front. The man loses his legs in the accident and the driver of the taxi, which came from behind, dies. The owner of EHNO, who lost his son to an accident and developed the driverless car after years of R&D, reaches out to popular law film Khanna & Khanna Associates to argue his case. "I thought technology can take care of us. But..." the owner says. During the case proceedings, the prosecutor side accuses EHNO of a hit-and-run -- after the accident occurred the car reversed and tried "to flee the crime scene", basically alluding to how AI-programmed machines were also running away shunning responsibility, very much like their creators. But, did the car really try to hit-and-run? According to EHNO's R&D head, the car must have had a reason to respond the way it did, adding that it kept the passenger it was carrying safe. The defence lawyer presents the same argument in court. The prosecution argues that EHNO killed a person in the other car. In the final verdict, the judge rules that while the claims are right, all parties are equally responsible in this accident. He then orders EHNO to award 33% compensation to each of the two petitioners. With Tesla opening shop in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), it's clear that the company regards India as a potential new market. A section of tech savvy and environmentally conscious Indians is also looking towards the American automaker for better and more sustainable options on the road. But, there's no harm in keeping driverless cars off Indian roads for a little longer.
