Elgin DMV to offer Saturday walk-in hours now through Sept. 6
During the end-of-summer Saturday hours, customers can apply for or renew a driver's license, state ID card or a REAL ID; switch from a Temporary Visitor Driver's License to a standard driver's license; renew their vehicle registration; or apply for persons with disabilities placards, according to a news release on the site.
To check what documents are required for each transaction type, go to www.ilsos.gov. Illinois residents going to the DMV specifically for a REAL ID can go online to realid.ilsos.gov/checklist.html to access an interactive checklist to make sure they have the documents they need before heading to a DMV.

'Customer trying to avoid sales tax bites us in the A$$,' he captions. The salesman says he bought a truck with a clean and clear South Dakota title and a history report that checked out. While the title was registered in South Dakota, the transaction was taking place in Missouri. After the title clears, he sells the truck to a new customer. The new customer who purchased the truck takes it to the DMV to register the vehicle and finds out he owes $3,300. 'The state of Missouri sees the South Dakota title with a Missouri address and name on the title, which draws up a red flag. Missouri believes they are owed sales tax money, which they are,' the car salesman shares. He continues, 'The reason that the customer registered in South Dakota was South Dakota's sales tax rate's about 4% compared to where he was gonna register here in Missouri was about 9%.' Meanwhile, 'The guy who sold us the truck is frustrated because he paid 4% sales tax in South Dakota. You should've never paid them anything in sales tax because you don't live there. You can't go to Missouri to knock off the 4% I paid to South Dakota,' the car salesman vents. He asks viewers who should ultimately be responsible for bearing the cost—himself or the previous owner who refused his request to settle the debt? Who Should Pay for This? Commenters chimed in to state that he should pay for the issue because he didn't catch it. 'Your finance department should have caught it,' one TikTok commenter shared. 'That's on the business for not performing their due diligence,' a second added. 'Two decades as a GM, the dealership eats it. It's a house mistake for not investigating the addresses and title discrepancy pre-delivery. You can ask the prior owner to pay, but he will tell you to pound salt. Can't punish either customer,' a former GM worker replied. While commenters agreed the dealership was responsible in this instance, the sales tax is usually paid by the customer registering the car. As J.D. Power reports, 'Even though it's not immediately clear, sales tax applies to every car deal you make. Generally, it is paid by the buyer whenever they register the car.' How Much Is Sales Tax on Cars? Private Auto shares that the sales tax on cars in most states will range from 5% to 9% on motor vehicles. The percentages are determined from the purchase price of the car when it exchanges hands. Used car sales tax is the same as new car sales tax. However, there are five states that have no car sales tax, although local sales tax can still be used. The states are Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. This new eBay service claims to improve the car buying experience
Buying a car can be a daunting process, especially if you're purchasing from a private party through a platform like Facebook Marketplace. eBay is trying to make that process easier and more convenient with the advent of 'Secure Purchase,' the online marketplace's new car buying process. How does it work? According to the press release, Secure Purchase takes care of payment, financing, registration, ownership transfer, and transport, while also keeping the funds digital and traceable. eBay breaks it down into four steps: Start the checkout: Both the buyer and seller verify their identity and provide basic information about the vehicle being purchased. Opt into services: The buyer can select their financing, transportation, protection, and insurance preferences in a few clicks. Submit key information: The seller uploads photos of the title, VIN, and odometer reading, all of which are independently verified through national vehicle title databases to ensure accuracy. Payment and signature: The buyer and seller digitally sign the required documents, then transfer funds through the platform to initiate registration and title transfer. Altogether, it looks like Secure Purchase acts as the middleman, with the eBay team verifying all the information that the seller and buyer send over. By taking care of tax, title, and other paperwork, neither of the parties even has to set foot in a DMV. That already has me sold. The car, the plates, and the title are even mailed to you, making this the closest to Amazon Prime for cars we'll likely get anytime soon. The entire process is powered by Caramel Dealer Services, LLC, an eBay subsidiary that the marketplace acquired earlier this year with the goal of doing this exact thing. There is also a $25 fee to buy a vehicle with Secure Purchase, but if all of the above go as planned, the fewer headaches are more than worth it. 'Online automotive shopping offers unmatched selection and value, but it can be overwhelming for some buyers,' said Jesse Kiefer, General Manager of Vehicles at eBay. 'Secure Purchase removes complexity and adds an extra layer of assurance for users on the marketplace. Shoppers can find exactly the vehicle they want at the right price from anywhere in the U.S., while sellers can close deals with complete confidence. And there's no visit to the DMV.' Final thoughts As someone who has bought two cars from private parties, I can tell you that the paperwork is never fun to deal with. My Datsun 620 had been sitting for so long that its existence was completely erased from the DMV system, and that was not a fun process to deal with. Not all circumstances will be that extreme, of course, but if eBay's Secure Purchase system works like it claims it does, buying a car will just be a matter of clicking a few buttons and sending some information over.
