Harry Maguire arrived in Chicago on Wednesday night to link up with his Manchester United team-mates for the Premier League Summer Series, which gets under way this weekend.Maguire did not travel with his team-mates on Tuesday for "personal reasons", sparking loads of conspiracy theories. The answer may have been quite straightforward judging by the number of happy birthday messages posted to Maguire's wife, Fern - including one from the United centre-back himself.

Trey Lance, Chargers trounce Lions in Hall of Fame Game

August 1 - Chargers backup quarterback Trey Lance kicked off the NFL preseason in style, throwing two touchdown passes while leading Los Angeles to a 34-7 rout of the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Thursday. With the star quarterbacks, Los Angeles' Justin Herbert and Detroit's Jared Goff, among the many regulars sitting out, Lance completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards. Chargers running back Kimani Vidal scored two touchdowns while running for 37 yards on nine carries. After Detroit's Grant Stuard fumbled away the opening kickoff, Lance led a 28-yard scoring drive that ended with a 5-yard scoring pass to Will Dissly. A 60-yard interception return by Nikko Reed set up the Chargers for their second touchdown, a 2-yard run by Vidal for a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter. Craig Reynolds (10 carries, 38 yards) scored the Lions' lone touchdown on a 3-yard run late in the second period. Lance's 15-yard TD pass to KeAndre Lambert-Smith made it 21-7 before halftime. Chargers quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, an undrafted free agent out of Florida State, connected on 2 of 3 passes for 25 yards. Detroit QB Kyle Allen went 9-for-14 for 91 yards with two interceptions, and Hendon Hooker wound up 3-for-6 for 18 yards with an interception. Lions wide receiver Dominic Lovett logged five receptions for 31 yards. --Field Level Media

Lyles, Richardson blaze through 100 heats at US Championships

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Olympic and world champion Noah Lyles breezed through his 100 metres heat in 10.05 at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon on Thursday before pulling out of the semi-finals to focus on the 200. With a ticket to the world championships in Tokyo on the line, Kenny Bednarek was the only man to dip under 10 seconds in the first round, posting 9.95. Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson are guaranteed spots in the men's and women's 100 at the worlds in September thanks to their triumphs at Budapest in 2023. Paris silver medallist Richardson clocked her season's best of 11.07 in the women's 100 preliminaries, with Jacious Sears leading the way with a 10.85 and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden third in 10.86. "I was running that like a final," Lyles said after his heat. "I only have one round in the 100m (and) two rounds in the 200m. I'm in plenty of shape, you know, in terms of endurance and rest and recovery." Richardson, competing in just her third race this year, said she was feeling good. "It felt amazing. Being able to compete, feeling healthy, going out there and executing no matter what (and) just being the best athlete I can be...," the 25-year-old said. "Just to run a qualifying round, show fitness and take the rest of the time to get ready for Tokyo." DeAnna Price won the women's hammer throw with a throw of 78.53 metres, while Curtis Thompson won the men's javelin. The meet runs from July 31 to August 3 at Hayward Field.

NFL debuts controversial new technology in Chargers-Lions preseason game as fans are left torn

The NFL have debuted their brand new virtual measurement technology, however not all football fans are convinced over the system. In the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night - which the Chargers won 34-7 against the Lions - officials made use of the new Hawk-Eye technology. Similarly to the system used in tennis, six cameras around the stadium are used to measure the line to gain, rather than using the chain system that had been in place. In the instance where it was used in the Hall of Fame Game, the call wasn't close and arguably the technology was not needed - but it provided an example of it's use. However, while some fans were full of praise for the new system, some fans voiced their concerns and poked fun at the idea that officials could use it to benefit teams. One naysayer on X wrote: 'What was wrong with the chains? Seems like just another way to fix games to me'. Another wrote: 'What good is it without a virtual spot? This is more draconian and less useful'. 'Doesn't change the fact that the ball is still spotted by the ref's eyes. That's what needs to be fixed,' another said. In a blunt message, another user wrote: 'This is so terrible'. Meanwhile, there were fans who were full of praise for the technology. One use said: 'Chains are out. Lasers are in. Welcome to the future'. 'Finally! The greatest country has the greatest tech for its greatest sport. Took you so long,' another wrote. 'That's actually pretty cool ngl,' one said. 'Hopefully it helps with spot issues'. Jokingly, another wrote: 'Our national crisis is finally over…' The NFL hailed the new technology as a more efficient method than the chains. They said: Sony's Hawk-Eye virtual measurement technology will serve as an efficient alternative to the process of walking chains onto the field and manually measuring whether 10 yards have been met after the official has spotted the ball. Some fans were left unimpressed with the new technology after it's debut on Thursday However, some fans were optimistic over the hawk-eye system and praised it on social media The new technology wasn't the only aspect of the pre-season opener which divided the opinions of fans. An American troop's unique rendition of the US national anthem similarly stirred debate. Staff Sergeant Ken Bettinger of the Ohio National Guard sang the Star Spangled Banner to fans at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Yet given he is not a singer by nature, Bettinger's performance left viewers torn on the night, with some mercilessly criticizing his vocals on social media. 'My man just sang the national anthem in like 4 different keys in the Hall Of Fame Game. That's usually talent, but I think… not so much this time,' one user wrote on X.
