James Martin admits his £5 million collection is 'weird' as he admits the driving force behind his love of cars.
The 52-year-old chef boasts an impressive collection of iconic and classic cars. Among them is a Subaru Impreza raced by legendary rally driver Colin McRae and a Mini Cooper raced by Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno Aaltonen.
James has however revealed his Toyota Hilux pickup truck is his favourite to drive. This he says is because he can 'chuck everything' in the 435-litre boot.

Speaking on the Good Food podcast with Samuel Goldsmith, James explained he sees his cars as 'art'. He said: 'Whether you collect anything, you see something as the Holy Grail, it's that sort of stuff, but the car to me is like an aesthetic moving little bit of art. They're just beautiful things.
'It's weird, I'm not married, I've got no kids, my kids have got four wheels, that's it, you're either into them or you're not. I'm not weirdly into them, so I don't get a deckchair and sit in the middle of a field and talk about pistons and stuff like that, but there's something about them.

'As a kid I used to peer through the window at Jack Barclay Showrooms in London when I was training as a chef thinking, 'One day'.'
James' impressive car collection is reported to contain a Bentley Continental, a Shelby Mustang, a Ferrari 275 GTB, and a Ferrari 288 GTO among others. Although he is said to favour his Hilux and a BMW 760Li for day-to-day use.

In an interview with SL.Man, he said: "I've got a Toyota Hilux pickup truck that I absolutely love – you can chuck everything in it and it will go forever. All my mates take the mick: 'So you've got all these cars, but you drive around in a pick-up truck?'"
James, who is said to be dating personal trainer Kim Johnson, has previously revealed he has no desire to get married. In a frank discussion with Sunday People some years back, he said: 'No, it doesn't interest me in the slightest, mainly because I've catered for so many weddings, really. I admire people who do it, that's fine, but I'm quite happy. I don't need to spend 60 grand on a day, no, I'm more than happy thanks."

The television star, who is surrounded by friends who have children, has spoken of the personal cost that a high octane career comes with. Speaking to Prima magazine in 2020, he admitted: "The biggest low of my career is that I've given up everything for it.
'The level of commitment it requires and the choices you have to make have a huge impact."
James Martin's Saturday Morning returns to TV screens at 9.30am on ITV One today as Julia Bradbury joins the star at his Hampshire home. Lisa Goodwin-Allen and Judy Joo will be serving food while First Dates star Merlin Griffiths will be making cocktails.

Reason why hit Sean Bean drama Shardlake isn't returning for season 2
Reason why hit Sean Bean drama Shardlake isn't returning for season 2 Shardlake is set to air on ITV for the first time tonight. Despite garnering glowing reviews, Shardlake won't be back for a second series. The historical drama makes its ITV debut tonight and is adapted from CJ Sansom's acclaimed novel series, starting with Dissolution. The show masterfully weaves fact and fiction, setting its narrative in the tumultuous era of King Henry VIII. Premiering on Disney Plus in 2024, Shardlake now occupies the prime 9pm slot on ITV1, offering an alternative to Maya Jama's Love Island premiere. Starring Sean Bean from Game of Thrones fame, Arthur Hughes as the Tudor lawyer Matthew Shardlake, and Anthony Boyle, the series delves into a gripping mystery. Thomas Cromwell (played by Sean) entrusts Shardlake with solving a murder linked to a monastery's closure, alongside his assistant Jack Barak (Anthony). Shardlake has landed on ITVX (Image: Hulu/YouTube ) Article continues below ITV makes major announcement and it involves Jeremy Clarkson and Ben Shephard READ MORE: Although Shardlake achieved a commendable 81% rating on Disney Plus, it has been confirmed that there will be no follow-up season due to its cancellation by the streaming service. The announcement of its discontinuation came this January, concurrent with the end of superhero comedy Extraordinary, as a Disney Plus representative informed Variety: "Disney+ Original series Extraordinary will not be returning for a third season on the service. "We're so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional writing talent of creator Emma Moran. "Disney+ Original series, Shardlake will also not be returning for a second season on the service. "We'd like to thank Stephen Butchard who adapted the late C.J. Sansom's beloved novel for the screen, the entire cast – led by the outstanding Arthur Hughes – and crew, and our production partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge. "We hope to work with all of our partners across these shows again in the future." Sean Bean stars in the historical drama (Image: Hulu/YouTube ) Though the thinking behind the cancellation was not officially confirmed, according to Radio Times, the team behind Shardlake had stressed they were keen to adapt the next book in Sansom's series, Dark Fire. Following Dissolution, the Shardlake novel series continued with Dark Fire, Sovereign, Revelation, Heartstone, Lamentation and Tombland, which was released in 2018. Despite his diagnosis with multiple myeloma in 2012, author Sansom continued writing and planning for future books. In a 2010 interview with The Guardian, he mused: "It would be nice to carry on into Elizabeth's time, and have someone I actually like on the throne. Shardlake meets Elizabeth in Heartstone, when she's just 11. By the time she comes to the throne, he will be long in the tooth and so will I, but I'd like to develop their relationship." However, he sadly died in April 2024 in a hospice near his home in Brighton at the age of 71. Shardlake began streaming on Disney+ just a week after his death.
