Villagers oppose license given for stone quarrying near their hamlet, cultivable lands
Opposing the license given for stone quarrying within two-km from their area, a group of villagers from Thathanoothu near here submitted petition to District Collector R. Sukumar on Monday.
The petitioners from Thaathanooththu near here on Tirunelveli – Madurai Highway said their hamlet with over 300 Scheduled Caste families were relying upon farming and cattle rearing, while a few more women from landless families were being hired under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme and as farmhands.
However, the Department of Mines had given license for mining stones from the place close to the cultivable lands of Thaathanooththu village. The explosives being used in an uncontrolled manner in the quarry have robbed off tranquillity of the village. Besides decimating farming operations of the agriculturists raising vegetables and cotton in their fields with unseasonal rain and well water, the stone quarry had permanently ended peaceful living in the village.
'Without eliciting the opinion of the public, the officials have given license to the stone quarry for reasons best known to everyone, as we all know how powerful the quarry owners are. As per the existing law, quarrying license can be given if the quarrying site is located 300 meters away from human habitations. Moreover, the norm of the Department of Mines also allows the giving of license for quarrying in a spot just 7.50 meters away from a patta land. So, both the norms should be scrapped as these regulations will kill farming and the villages located nearby. Hence, the license given for quarrying near Thaathanooththu should be cancelled, and the existing norms paving way for issue of license for quarrying near villages should be scrapped permanently or at least modified,' said V. Sudalaimani, who led the villagers.
Members of the Coordination Committee of Tamil Nadu All Farmers' Associations submitted a petition against the Centre's recent decision to modify the norms pertaining to gold loans. The petitioners, led by D. Abraham, Tirunelveli district president of the Association, said the agriculturists, who had already been hit hard by vagaries of nature, were unable to repay their gold loan and redeem the gold pledged for raising the loans.
The recently announced modifications in the norms for raising gold loans would land the farmers in debt trap, and hence, these unrealistic modifications should be withdrawn permanently, said the farmers.
On behalf of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam, the party's ward seven secretary A. Mano Stanly submitted a petition seeking action to check the anti-social activities happening in the anganwadi at Manakavalam Pillai Nagar after dusk. Since the rowdies gathering there consume liquor at night, the liquor bottles broken there by them would pose serious threat to the children coming to the anganwadi the next day.
Hence, the officials concerned should take immediate steps to keep the rowdies away from the angavadis by constructing compound wall, he said.

Centre is trying to frame me: former J&K Governor
Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik said on Saturday (June 7, 2025) that the Centre is trying to frame him in false chargesheets by threatening him with cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In a post on X in Hindi, Mr. Malik said, 'The tender they want to implicate me in was one I personally cancelled. I had informed the Prime Minister about the corruption in that matter, and after informing him, I cancelled that tender myself. After my transfer, that tender was approved with someone else's signature.' Mr. Malik said he is admitted in the Intensive Unit Care (ICU) of a hospital for kidney-related ailment. 'My condition is becoming very serious. Whether I survive or not, I want to tell the truth to my fellow countrymen — When I was Governor, I was offered bribes of ₹150 to ₹150 crore, but like my political mentor, the late farmer leader Chaudhary Charan Singh, I worked with honesty, and my integrity could never be shaken,' he said. The case in which Mr. Malik has been chargesheeted involves the awarding of ₹2,200 crore worth of civil works for the Kiru Hydroelectric Project. Registered by the CBI in April 2022 on a reference from the Jammu and Kashmir government, the FIR alleged Chenab Valley Power Project (P) Limited (CVPPPL), at its 47th board meeting, had decided to cancel the then ongoing tendering process and re-tender for the works through e-tenders with reverse auction. The FIR alleged that the very next board meeting of the CCVPPL saw this decision reversed, leading to the contract being awarded to Patel Engineering in 2019. In the chargesheet filed in the case by the CBI last month, besides Mr. Malik, who was the Governor of J&K from August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019, seven others had been chargesheeted. This included the then MD of CVPPL, M.S. Babu, and directors M.K. Mittal and Arun Kumar Mishra. Others charged are then Managing Director of Patel Engineering Limited, Rupen Patel (deceased), along with Virender Rana, Kanwar Singh Rana, and Kanwaljeet Singh Duggal. 'The government has put all its strength into defaming me. In the end, my request to the government and its agencies is to please tell the truth to the beloved people of my country — what did you find against me in your investigations? The truth, however, is that after serving the nation in very high positions for over 50 years in my political life, I still live in a single-room house and am in debt. If I had wealth today, I would be getting treatment in a private hospital,' he said.

Centre has diverted funds due to Tamil Nadu to other states: TNCC chief
COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai on Saturday accused the BJP-led central govt of collecting taxes from Tamil Nadu without releasing the corresponding funds to the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He condemned the Centre's move to reduce Lok Sabha seats in south India under the guise of constituency delimitation. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport on Saturday, Selvaperunthagai alleged that funds due to Tamil Nadu were being withheld and diverted to other states. 'Why the BJP govt, which exploits the blood and sweat of the people of Tamil Nadu, has not released funds for school education or disaster relief,' he asked. He accused the Centre of showing a stepmotherly attitude towards the state. The TNCC chief said the proposed delimitation would adversely affect southern states and it could render southern votes and parliamentary representation insignificant if carried out as the BJP desired. He warned that northern MPs would dominate decision-making, leaving little or no voice for the south. Commenting on Union home minister Amit Shah's visit to Madurai, he alleged that it was an attempt to create confusion and gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu. However, he asserted that such efforts would fail, as the people clearly understood the BJP's intentions. He reiterated that there was no place for the BJP or the RSS in the state.
