The Map that Leads to You movie review: Like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani with a Schengen visa

Swedish director Lasse Hallström knows his way around a sappy romance movie. Having made Chocolat and The Hundred Foot Journey in the past, the filmmaker has worked with everyone from Johnny Depp to Om Puri. His new film, The Map that Leads to You, marries an old-fashioned approach with a youthful energy. It stars Madelyn Cline and KJ Apa as two travellers who bump into each other while on vacation in Spain. Heather is a recent college graduate who is making the most of her final days of freedom with her friends; Jack is an unmoored wanderer going wherever the wind takes him. He is armed with nothing but a fearless attitude and his great grandfather's handwritten journal. Heather, on the other hand, has everything planned to the tee. She has dinner reservations to hit, museums to explore, and trains to catch. In more ways than one, The Map that Leads to You is like Hollywood's answer to Ayan Mukerji's needlessly lionised coming-of-age drama Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Heather is like a stalled sailboat in severe need of a gust of wind. Jack's exactly what she needs. They first meet on a train to Barcelona, when he wordlessly climbs onto the overhead luggage rack above Heather's seat, and takes a nap there. Later that night, they strike up a conversation about Ernest Hemingway. Jack is like any number of characters that Ranbir Kapoor has played over the years, a pretend free spirit who doesn't realise how rigid he is. For instance, in one scene, he rants about kids taking selfies at a historic site. Also read – My Oxford Year movie review: Netflix's Saiyaara-coded weepy is no better than a Mohit Suri movie Heather reminds him that the ancient journal he's carrying with him is essentially the same as a selfie; a time capsule of a certain moment, made eternal for future generations to admire. He doesn't disagree. But there are certain beliefs that he absolutely will not let go of, no matter how deeply affected he is by this blonde stranger from Texas that he pulled into an adventure. But while Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy hit it off instantly in Before Sunrise, it takes Heather and Jack a little while to get to know each other. He shows up, uninvited, to a party that he'd overheard she was going to. They slip away, and agree to extend their trip to be with each other for a little while longer. It takes them a Bollywood-approved amount of time to declare their love for each other, but, as you'd expect in a story like this, there's a third-act twist waiting to pounce on our unassuming protagonist. It doesn't make sense to reveal this twist here, but it wouldn't take a genius to predict what it is. The Map that Leads to You follows every cliche in the book. But with these movies, it's often about the ingredients and not the dish. A pizza is a pizza, but the congealed slab you get at Dominos isn't the same as a hand-crafted Neapolitan pie cooked inside a wood-fired clay oven, is it? Or, to make a more appropriate analogy, a tubful of Biryani by Kilo isn't the same as freshly made paella. Also read – The Idea of You movie review: Anne Hathaway is spectacularly good in Prime Video's steamy romantic drama The Map that Leads to You isn't as sloppy as the average streaming rom-com, primarily because it has been directed by someone who knows a thing or two about movies like this. Hallström is 80, after all. The movie isn't filmed on a soundstage in Atlanta, with green curtains doubling for the Basque countryside. And Cline is a wonderful rom-com heroine; her performance feels lived-in, and she does little things that make Heather feel like a real person and not the figment of some man's imagination. Like when she shakes her leg awkwardly as Jack goes off on one of his latest philosophical ramblings. While he tends to speak in bumper-sticker quotes – 'Your thoughts create your future,' he says in one scene – Heather behaves like a person you might actually bump into on a vacation somewhere. Or, you could if you were Shah Rukh Khan. Jack is the kind of person that could come across as magnetic to a certain audience, and insufferable to another. This could partially be blamed on Apa's one-note performance. Even when Jack pulls Heather into mini-adventures along the way, their interactions have all the frisson of a guided tour of a mausoleum in peak summer. By the time he pulls his ultimate move, you'd have already made your mind up about him. And this hurts the film's third act. Heather makes certain decisions that seem entirely illogical, and the plot conspires to reverse past inconsistencies. The Map that Leads to You ends exactly how you imagine it would. It all makes very little sense, and the pathos feels unearned. But if momentary catharsis is what you're after, it might be just the fix you need. The Map that Leads to You Director – Lasse Hallström Cast – Madelyn Cline, KJ Apa Rating – 2.5/5

Shah Rukh Khan Reveals Bobby Deol Complained About Aryan Khan's Direction: 'Bhai Yeh Bohot...'

Last Updated: Bobby Deol asked Shah Rukh Khan to reach the sets of The Ba***ds Of Bollywood and ask Aryan Khan to wrap up for the day. Netflix launched the preview of its much-awaited series, The Ba**ds Of Bollywood, in a grand event in Mumbai, marking the directorial and writing debut of Aryan Khan, son of Shah Rukh Khan. The show features Lakshya, Sahher Bambba, and Bobby Deol in key roles. At the event, Bobby Deol revealed how Aryan Khan made the actors work extremely hard. Shah Rukh Khan added that Bobby even asked SRK to come to the set and let him go home. As SRK welcomed Bobby Deol on set, he said, 'We have been working together for 30 years, and we usually aren't this formal with each other. I never thought that this day would come when we would be working with our kids. I want to thank Bobby from the bottom of my heart, with all my love, for making this show with my son. You have brought so much warmth, love and gravitas to the show." Bobby Deol said, 'It is quite a special day for me as well, because our kids want to join the same industry, and now Aryan has taken that step. I remember seeing him as a kid and the kind of person he became as he grew up. He has always been ready to conquer the world, and today is the day." He added, 'I am extremely lucky to be a part of this project. Woh alag baat hai ki boht nichodha hamein (he overworked us a lot). He used to ask me, 'One more take?' and I used to say, 'Haan beta, ek aur take (Why not? Let's do it). I initially thought that he was going to go easy on us, but he made us work very hard." Bobby even revealed how Aryan narrated the script to him for seven hours, even though he had already agreed to be a part of the show. Shah Rukh Khan recalled, 'Ek baar isne raat ko call karke bola, ki tu aja bhai yeh boht kaam karwa raha hai, mujhe jaana hai ab (He called me during the night one time and told me, 'Please come to the set, he is making us work too much. I need to go now)." Bobby lauded Aryan and said, 'I have seen him as a little boy, and then years later, when I heard him speak, there was something magical about him, as if he was ready to conquer the world." Praising Aryan's vision, Bobby concluded, 'It's not special because it's Aryan's or Shah Rukh bhai's project, but because it truly is massive. Every actor has performed brilliantly, but it's the director who brings out the soul of the story. Aryan pushed us, made us do many takes, but he brought out the best in everyone." The Ba***ds of Bollywood: Cast and Release Date The show stars Bobby Deol, Lakshya, Sahher Bambba, Manoj Pahwa, Mona Singh, Manish Chaudhari, Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh and Vijayant Kohli with Rajat Bedi and Gautami Kapoor. We will also see Salman Khan, Karan Johar and Ranveer Singh making a special appearance in Aryan Khan's show. The preview of The Ba***ds of Bollywood hints at a fast-paced show, set in a stylised yet chaotic world, laced with self-aware humour and a tongue-in-cheek tone. It's the ultimate underdog story that asks: How far will you go for your dream, what are you willing to lose, and can you survive a few Bollywood baddies along the way? The Ba***ds Of Bollywood will be released on September 18 on Netflix. First Published: August 22, 2025, 07:53 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
