Michigan man drives to police station, ends up with OWI arrest

CBS News5 days ago
A Michigan man found out that driving to a police department while intoxicated might result in unintended consequences.
The Troy Police Department in Oakland County, Michigan, reported that such a scenario happened shortly after 6 p.m. on July 23 at their police station on West Big Beaver Road.
That's when a 43-year-old Troy resident stopped by the lobby to explain that he was there to drop off medication for his wife, who was in custody in the police department's short-term lock-up facility. But while speaking with the man, police noted "he was unsteady on his feet and had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person."
As a result of his appearance and upon learning he had driven to the station, police asked the man to perform several sobriety evaluations. "Officers noted he performed poorly," police said.
He then agreed to take a preliminary breath test, which came back with a result of .162%.
The legal blood alcohol limit for Michigan adults who are driving is 0.08%.
The man was then arrested and taken to the Troy Police lock-up facility, where follow-up chemical breath tests were given and came back with results of .175% and .177%.
Police issued him a citation for operating while intoxicated.

Metro Detroit man charged again, could face 30th retail fraud conviction

A Michigan man who has 29 previous convictions of retail fraud is facing charges for another case, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Dwayne Effren Taylor, of Clinton Township, was arraigned on Tuesday in the 41B District Court for first-degree retail fraud and habitual offender-fourth offense. Prosecutors requested a $50,000 cash bond, a steel cuff GPS tether, for Taylor to have no contact with the store involved, and a substance abuse evaluation. His bond was set at $29,000 cash/surety. Prosecutors allege that on Monday, Aug. 4, Taylor was at a Target store on Gratiot Avenue in Clinton Township and attempted to leave the store with multiple items in a shopping cart without paying. The store's loss prevention team detained Taylor and recovered the items, with a total value of $900. "This defendant has been arrested for retail fraud an astonishing 30 times and is currently out on parole for the very same offense. His repeated disregard for the law shows a clear pattern of criminal behavior and a refusal to change course. Our office will be seeking significant consequences in this case. Retail theft is not a victimless crime; it harms businesses, workers, and communities. Chronic offenders must be held accountable," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido in a statement. Taylor's next court hearing is on Aug. 18.

France arrests man who lit cigarette from Unknown Soldier memorial flame

A man was arrested in Paris on Tuesday for lighting a cigarette from the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, an act condemned by French officials as a desecration of a national war memorial. The incident sparked outrage across France for what authorities called an insult to the memory of fallen soldiers. A man who lit a cigarette from a memorial flame at a major Paris war monument was arrested on Tuesday, the interior minister said, calling his actions "indecent and pathetic". "The man who desecrated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by lighting a cigarette with the memorial flame was arrested in Paris for violating a burial site, tomb, urn, or monument erected in memory of the dead. He was taken into custody and admitted the facts," Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau wrote on X. The video of a man stooping and lighting up from the fire at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, before walking calmly away watched by tourists, caused indignation when it was widely shared on social media. The alleged infraction took place on Monday evening and the man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, police told AFP. "You cannot ridicule French remembrance and get away with it," Patricia Miralles, minister for veterans and remembrance, wrote on X. The tomb, under the giant arch at the top of the iconic Champs Elysees avenue, contains the remains of a soldier killed in the First World War, laid there as a tribute to France's dead. "This flame does not light a cigarette, it burns for the sacrifice of millions of our soldiers," said Miralles. "This is an insult to our dead, to our history and to our nation." AFP was not able to determine the origin of the video. Le Figaro newspaper reported that it was filmed by a Latvian tourist on the evening of August 4 and first posted on TikTok. The tourist told Figaro that the man did not appear drunk and seemed to be well aware of what he was doing. (FRANCE 24 with AFP)

Mom, 46, Dies in Mobile Home Fire Despite Neighbors' Rescue Efforts as Teen Son and Friends Survive

"We pretty much heard her take her last breath," said a neighbor, who tried to rescue the trapped womanNEED TO KNOW A 46-year-old woman is dead after a fire engulfed her Michigan home on Aug. 4, authorities said Her 13-year-old son and his two friends were able to escape without serious injury "It was chaotic,' a neighbor said about the tragic incidentA 46-year-old Michigan woman is dead after a fire engulfed her mobile home, authorities said. Her 13-year-old son and his two friends were able to escape the Monday, Aug. 4, blaze, but neighbors weren't able to get her out of the building in time, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said in a press release shared on Facebook. Authorities said emergency responders responded just before 7:15 a.m. local time to Clarkston Lakes, a mobile home community in Clarkston. When they arrived, the single-wide mobile home in the 3800 block of Cedar Loop was 'engulfed in flames." 'Neighbors were unsuccessful in their attempts to help the mother escape from the rear of the home,' the sheriff's office said. The woman, who has not been identified at this time, died as a result of the fire. Authorities said the woman's 13-year-old son, who was in a rear bedroom, and two boys, ages 14 and 15, who were in the front of the house, all escaped without serious injury. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office and the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office have been contacted by PEOPLE for further comment. Just hours after the flames subsided, locals shared harrowing details about the fire and attempts to save the woman. 'It was chaotic,' a neighbor, Robert Elder, told FOX affiliate WJBK. 'There were people running around, screaming, trying to figure out if everybody was out.' He and another resident living nearby tried to rescue the 46-year-old woman when they realized she was trapped inside. "We were pulling on her, and then we would almost take turns pulling on her,' he told the outlet. 'At one point I think we both grabbed her arms trying to pull on her.' Elder compared the heat of the fire to being near the sun. The flames caused the sides of neighbors' homes to melt, WJBK reported. "We pretty much heard her take her last breath," Elder told the outlet. "That was the hardest part.' The man added that he wished that he could have done more to save her, according to WJBK. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard offered his thoughts and prayers to the family following the tragic incident, and also issued a reminder to residents. 'While we are still in the process of determining cause and origin, any fire is a reminder that we should make sure our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order,' he said in a statement, 'and we know how to escape from any room in our house should an emergency call for it.'
