Revanth Reddy Bats For Telugu OBC Leader Bandaru Dattatreya For Vice President Post

NDTV23-07-2025
New Delhi:
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday demanded former Union Minister and ex-Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, an OBC leader from Telangana, be made the Vice President of India.
He said the post should be given to Telangana as Telugu was the second-most spoken language in the country, and justice to the native speakers must be done.
Meanwhile, he termed as "unfortunate" the resignation of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar.
"The next Vice President should be from Telangana. Telangana deserves its due. You cannot do so much injustice to the people of Telangana. Telugu is the second most spoken language in India after Hindi, and then comes Bengali. Injustice has been done to our people.
"I have demanded that the NDA government appoint Bandaru Dattatreya as the next Vice President of India. If Dattatreya is made the vice president, then some of your sins will be forgiven," the Congress leader told reporters here.
Mr Dattatreya was the Haryana governor during 2019-2021. He was made the governor of Himachal Pradesh in July 2021 and vacated that post on July 21 this year.
Mr Reddy said he proposed Mr Dattatreya's name because there is so much talk about OBCs these days, and Dattatreya, an OBC, was removed from the post of governor.
He said Bandi Sanjay was also axed as the BJP president of Telangana, as he termed both these leaders the main face of Telugu OBCs.
"They sent a person of Telugu-speaking person back home from Delhi (referring to former VP M Venkaiah Naidu). Then they removed Bandaru Dattatreya as governor and then removed Bandi Sanjay as Telangana BJP president," said Mr Reddy, attacking the BJP-led Centre.
Asked if the Congress would support Mr Dattatreya's candidature, he said, "I will try and help Bandaru Dattatreya, and I will also request my leadership to support him too, but the Congress leadership will take a call on it." Mr Reddy also alleged that the country is in danger till the NDA government is in power, and it has to be removed.

Train blasts, Malegaon: Two attacks, multiple investigations, and how the cases fell

In a span of 10 days, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and National Investigation Agency (NIA) have received major blows in two big terrorism cases, with courts junking their investigation and finding no substance in their theories, leading to the accused being let off. Pointing to lapses in the Malegaon investigation, the Special NIA Court Thursday said: 'Though there was strong suspicion against the accused persons, the investigating agencies failed to establish their guilt beyond reasonable doubt to convict them.' The September 2008 Malegaon blasts had left six people dead and over a hundred injured. All the seven accused, including former BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, were acquitted by the court Thursday. The ATS's case was that the blasts were carried out by people with radical Hindutva leanings, with the communally sensitive Malegaon chosen deliberately for an attack during the month of Ramzan and on the eve of Navaratri. On July 21, the Bombay High Court set aside a special court verdict, acquitting all 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case that killed 186. Of the accused, five had been awarded death sentences and seven life terms. Both these cases happened under Congress-led governments in the state and at the Centre — and were first investigated by the state ATS. Both had communal and political overtones; hence, amid allegations from political parties, different probe agencies were roped in at different stages of the case, impacting the overall investigation. In the Mumbai train blasts case, the ATS built a case blaming individuals linked to members of the Students' Islamic Movement of India, backed by Pakistani terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The Special MCOCA Court validated the ATS's investigation and, in October 2015, awarded the death penalty to five of the convicts and life terms to seven others. The accused kept claiming that they were subjected to torture during the custodial interrogation. On July 21, the Bombay High Court set aside this verdict, putting a big question mark on the ATS's theory that individuals linked to SIMI had orchestrated the blasts. This is important as, two years after the train blasts, the Mumbai Crime Branch, then headed by Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria, had claimed that when they busted the Indian Mujahideen (IM) module that had carried out blasts in Ahmedabad and other parts of the country, their members had admitted to also having carried out the Mumbai train blasts. In the Malegaon case, in October-November 2008, the ATS under its then chief Hemant Karkare made arrests of several alleged Hindu fundamentalists, including Thakur, and invoked MCOCA. However, soon after, Karkare was killed during the November 26, 2008, Mumbai attack, after which former ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi was roped in to investigate the Malegaon case. He was first given additional charge of the ATS for seven months, then made full-fledged ATS chief and promoted to ADG rank. During his first stint with the ATS, Raghuvanshi, incidentally, had led the investigation into the 2006 Mumbai train blasts as well. Karkare's investigation, alleging the involvement of Hindu extremists, was reflected in the first chargesheet filed by the ATS in January 2009, followed by a supplementary chargesheet in April 2011. However, in April 2011, the Ministry of Home Affairs, under the UPA government, suo motu directed the NIA to take up further investigation. The Central agency registered cases under provisions of the MCOCA, UAPA, Explosive Substances Act, and Indian Penal Code. In May 2014, the UPA was replaced by the BJP-led NDA at the Centre. Two years later, on May 13, 2016, the NIA filed its second supplementary chargesheet in the case, which dropped MCOCA charges against all the accused. This was significant as the ATS had relied heavily on confessional statements made by some of the accused, which were admissible as evidence under MCOCA. After the NIA took over, 33 witnesses turned hostile in the case. Some claimed that their accounts were recorded under pressure. Before the trial could commence in the case, the NIA moved court requesting that Pragya Thakur be dropped as an accused as there was no witness or proof to show she was involved in the conspiracy. However, the court did not accept this, citing the prima facie evidence against her. In May 2015, Special Public Prosecutor in the case Rohini Salian told The Indian Express that NIA officers had put pressure on her to 'go soft' on the accused and not to appear in hearings. Calling the ATS investigation into the Malegaon 2008 blasts flawed, former Additional DGP P K Jain said that 33 witnesses turning hostile in one case was very unusual, and indicated major flaws in the investigation. The Nashik Range IG when blasts hit Malegaon in 2006, Jain said the initial police investigation then had found the role of local persons and two Pakistanis. But the ATS, while probing the 2008 Malegaon blasts, blamed alleged Hindu fundamentalists for the 2006 blasts too, Jain said. The original accused were discharged and a new set of accused were injected, thus ruining the whole case, he alleged. After the Central and state governments came under criticism for failing to provide justice to the victims of the train blasts case, the Maharashtra government had promptly challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court of India. It is to be seen if the NIA challenges Thursday's verdict in the High Court.

Indian economy devastated by five Modi-inflicted shocks: Congress

The Congress on Friday (August 1, 2025) claimed that the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of "five Modi-inflicted shocks", and said the government, as well as its cheerleaders, are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy. Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said the Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. The Opposition party's assertions came a day after former Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman knows that the country's economy is "dead". Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible. Demonetisation completely disrupted our growth momentum and destroyed the livelihoods of crores of Indians. A… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 1, 2025 In a post on X, Mr. Ramesh said, "Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible." He said demonetisation completely disrupted our growth momentum and destroyed the livelihoods of crores of Indians. "A fundamentally flawed GST--that is a Tax that is neither Good nor Simple--has wreaked havoc on thousands of business enterprises across the country, except the large companies who can afford to pay the cost associated with GST compliance," Ramesh said. He further claimed that the record imports from China have led to the closure of lakhs of MSMEs across the country in — Gujarat alone, around a third of the MSMEs in the stainless steel industry have shut down their operations. Exports in key areas are dependent on imports of raw materials, components, and intermediates from China, he said. Mr. Ramesh pointed out that private investment has lost the buoyancy it demonstrated during 2004-14. "Indian industrialists are acquiring citizenship of other countries in an ever-increasing measure. The politically motivated and extortionist Raid Raj, coupled with the proliferation of Modani's tentacles, has led to a loss of confidence in the Indian economy," Mr. Ramesh alleged. He argued that wages for the majority of Indians have stagnated in the last decade, across sectors and across classes. "This is particularly so in rural India. Household savings have fallen sharply just as household debt has ballooned. Private mass consumption, one of the key drivers of growth, is sputtering just as luxury consumption has not ebbed, clearly pointing to sharpening economic inequalities," the Congress leader said. "The Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. They are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy," Mr. Ramesh said. On Thursday, Mr. Gandhi had alleged that the BJP-led government has destroyed the country's economic, defence and foreign policies, and is "running the country to the ground". Speaking with reporters in the Parliament House complex, Mr. Gandhi had also claimed that a trade deal with the US will happen and US President Donald Trump will define it. Asked about Trump calling the Indian economy "dead", the Congress leader had said, "He is right, everybody knows this except the prime minister and the finance minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact." He had alleged that the BJP has destroyed the Indian economy.

'Previous Govt Set Hindu Terrorism Narrative': Fadnavis Says Malegaon Verdict 'Exposed Conspiracy'

Last Updated: Devendra Fadnavis accused the UPA government of fabricating the 'saffron terror' narrative for vote-bank politics after the Malegaon blast acquittals. A day after all seven accused in the Malegaon blast case were acquitted, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis accused the Congress-led UPA government of trying to set the 'saffron terrorism' narrative and alleged that officers from that time tried to frame Hindu religious leaders and organisations. 'The conspiracy of 2008 has been exposed before everyone. The government at that time, for the sake of vote-bank politics, coined terms like 'Hindu terror' and 'saffron terrorism'," Fadanavis said. 'At that time, large-scale terrorist incidents were happening across the world, and 'Islamic terrorism' was a topic of discussion worldwide. To avoid angering their vote bank and to make it seem like they were maintaining balance, they created the notion of 'Hindu terrorism' and arrested people," he said. 'But, despite much effort, no solid evidence was found. Layer by layer, this conspiracy is coming to light," the Maharashtra Chief Minister said. On Thursday too, Fadnavis had claimed that police acted under the UPA government's pressure while probing the 2008 Malegaon blast, and Congress should apologise to the Hindus for the 'fake narrative of saffron terror." Fadnavis claimed that the probe was a conspiracy to defame the Hindus. The future course of action will be decided after studying the judgment, he had said, speaking to reporters in Mumbai. 'Congress should apologise to the acquitted accused and Hindu society," he demanded. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
