Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft feud over Patriots coaching change
Belichick renewed the war again on July 16 in a statement to ESPN.
"As I told Robert multiple times through the years, I took a big risk by taking the New England Patriots head coaching job," Belichick told ESPN. "I already had an opportunity to be the head coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation (there) was unstable."
The coach claimed he was urged to remain with the Jets, rather than accept the job in New England.
"I had been warned by multiple previous Patriots' coaches, as well as other members of other NFL organizations and the media, that the New England job was going to come with many internal obstacles," Belichick said. "I made it clear that we would have to change the way the team was managed to regain the previously attained success."
The statement, which seemingly came out of left field, was in apparent response to something Kraft had said a week earlier on the "Dudes on Dudes" podcast with former Patriots, Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski.
Kraft was asked to name his best decision as owner and responded by talking about Belichick - appearing to indicate that hiring the coach was the answer.
"Well, the one that got questioned the most was in '99," Kraft said. "I gave up a No. 1 draft pick for a coach who had only won a little over 40% of his games. But getting Bill Belichick to come to the Patriots in 1999 was a big risk, and I got hammered in the Boston media. But he was with us for 24 years, and we did OK."
Belichick seems to have taken issue with being called a "big risk" by Kraft, but the owner isn't wrong. Trading a first-round pick for a coach with a 36-44 record was far from a safe move.
New England took a leap of faith, knowing they could've handed a top draft pick over to a bitter rival in their own division.
It was the latest chapter in a saga that already saw Belichick omit Kraft from his book and an Apple TV documentary about the Patriots, which portrayed the coach as the bad guy.
The duo went on to experience 24 years of success together, something neither side wants to let go of now. Recent history shows that they were better off together anyway.
Kraft's Patriots fired Belichick's successor, Jerod Mayo, after one season with a 4-13 record. Belichick, on the other hand, has become unrecognizable in his post-Patriots life. Between various media appearances and the ongoing circus surrounding his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, the 73-year-old is far from the person NFL fans knew for over two decades.
Now Belichick is in the college ranks, set to make his debut as the head coach at the University of North Carolina in the fall.
It's his latest attempt to move on in his football life, while trying to prove he can still coach at a high level.
Once known for his cut-up hoodies and intimidating sideline demeanor, the ruler of the "Evil Empire" could've opted to walk away and ride into the sunset to await his moment of enshrinement at the Hall of Fame.
Belichick ran his Patriots teams on the idea that they would move on from players a year early, rather than a year late. That seems to be the same concept Kraft employed to move on from the long-time coach.
The previous unflappable, stoic coach finally met his match.
And he's not going down without a fight.

Dolphins sign CB Jack Jones after Artie Burns injury
July 26 - The Miami Dolphins signed free agent cornerback Jack Jones in response to the season-ending injury suffered by Artie Burns in practice on Wednesday. The team announced the signing on Saturday but did not reveal the terms. ESPN reported Jones signed a one-year deal. He was at work at training camp in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Saturday. CBS Miami posted video to its X account showing Jones talking with head coach Mike McDaniel. Jones, 27, was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He spent his first season in New England before being waived on Nov. 13, 2023. The Las Vegas Raiders claimed him off waivers the following day and released him in April after unsuccessfully trying to trade him. The move saved the Raiders $3.4 million in cap space. Jones appeared in 17 games for the Raiders last season (16 starts). He intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown, and defended 16 passes. He made a career-high 69 tackles. On the flip side, Jones allowed 698 yards and nine touchdowns. In 42 career games (21 starts), Jones has seven interceptions and four touchdowns to go with a forced fumble and fumble recovery. He also has 27 passes defended and 136 tackles. The Dolphins put Burns on season-ending injured reserve but did not divulge his exact injury. Multiple outlets reported he tore an ACL. Burns signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in the offseason and Miami is thin at cornerback without him. The Dolphins traded Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers and could have multiple undrafted free agents in the starting three at corner alongside Cam Smith. Storm Duck, Kader Kohou and Ethan Bonner -- all undrafted -- are competing with rookie fifth-rounder Jason Marshall Jr., undrafted free agent rookies BJ Adams and Ethan Robinson. With Jones' signing, Miami waived cornerback Ryan Cooper Jr. The Dolphins open the 2025 season on Sept. 7 in Indianapolis against the Colts. --Field Level Media

Jets' Justin Fields participates in QB drills, despite toe injury
July 26 - New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields participated in individual quarterback drills at training camp on Saturday morning, despite a dislocated toe on his right foot. The drills included rollouts and some throwing. Team drills remain off limits for now for Fields, who is considered day-to-day. Fields sustained the injury Thursday in camp in Florham Park, N.J., and was carted off the field. Tests showed the injury to be relatively minor compared to initial fears of a more serious issue. The Jets also have veteran backup Tyrod Taylor on the roster. Adrian Martinez, the 2024 United Football League MVP, and rookie Brady Cook also are in the quarterback room. A 2021 first-round pick of the Chicago Bears, Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract in March, and the Jets are counting on him to replace Aaron Rodgers. Fields is 14-30 as a starter and has passed for 7,780 yards with 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in 50 games with the Bears (2021-23) and Pittsburgh Steelers 2024). He has rushed for 2,509 yards and 19 touchdowns. The Jets open the 2025 season on Sept. 7 against the Steelers and their new quarterback, ex-Jet Rodgers, at home in East Rutherford, N.J. --Field Level Media

Travis Kelce's friend predicts stunning Chiefs trade that will see him ditch NFL retirement plans
Travis Kelce 's sports analyst friend Nick Wright has theorized that there could be one player to convince the Kansas City Chiefs star to play one more season in the NFL. While the tight end postponed his retirement plans this offseason to return to the NFL for the 2025 season, he hasn't yet been prepared to commit to suiting up for the 2026 season or beyond. However, Wright, who previously claimed he barely speaks to his pal Kelce since he began dating Taylor Swift, hinted this week that the footballer's future could hinge on a potential stunning trade. The sports podcaster claimed that controversial wide receiver Tyreek Hill could make a return to Kansas City next year, reuniting with Kelce and Patrick Mahomes for one last rodeo. 'I told you guys a year ago that I'm very excited for Tyreek Hill wearing a Chiefs uniform in 2026,' Wright said on his show, 'What's Wright? With Nick Wright'. 'Because I think that's going to happen. It's not going to happen this year but that I think is going to happen. 'And maybe that's enough to get Kelce to come back for one more year. A little final Tyreek-Kelce ride off into the sunset together.' Hill's current $90million contract with the Miami Dolphins runs through the 2026 season. However, his future with the Dolphins looked rocky throughout the offseason. The wide receiver's relationship with the Dolphins has been left in contentious shape after he repeatedly hinted at a move out of Miami with thinly-veiled jibes at the team and his teammates. And while Hill looks set to suit up for the Dolphins for at least the upcoming season, whether he will stay in the 305 beyond 2025 could be uncertain. Before signing with the Dolphins, Hill played six seasons in Kansas City after being drafted by the Chiefs in 2016. After sharing the field with Kelce for the first six seasons of his NFL career, the five-time First-Team All-Pro player previously insisted that the Kelce was the best tight end he played with. Kelce nearly retired after the Chiefs were destroyed by the Philadelphia Eagles in February's Super Bowl in New Orleans. The emphatic 40-22 scoreline actually flattered the Chiefs and Kelce's struggles to get open encapsulated a season where he failed to find his best form. He finished the game with four catches for 39 yards. The wide receiver spent the first six seasons of his career with Kelce and the Chiefs Following the defeat, Kelce was non-committal about his future, saying on his subsequent New Heights podcast he would 'take some time to figure it out.' But last month, while he was not prepared to give a definite answer on his NFL future beyond the upcoming season, he insisted that he was locked in for the looming campaign. 'I got one year on this contract, I know that,' the 35-year-old said Wednesday at the second of three voluntary practices. 'And we'll try to figure out something for next year,' Kelce said after the second day of the Chiefs' mandatory three-day minicamp, which was moved partially indoors because of lightning in the area. 'The Chiefs organization knows how much I love them. I can't see myself playing anywhere else,' Kelce continued. 'We'll deal with [2026] down the road, when the time is right. But right now, I'm focused on winning a championship this year.' Hill, meanwhile, cast his own NFL future into doubt after the end of the 2024 season when he appeared to hint at a move out of Miami. The wideout appeared to take himself out the team's final game of the 2024 season against the New York Jets , with head coach Mike McDaniel then denying Hill's claim that he was hurt and couldn't play. Then, speaking with reporters after the game, Hill was visibly unhappy at missing the postseason. 'This is my first time I haven't been in the playoffs, man,' Hill said. 'So I just got to do what's best for me and my family. 'I'm opening the door. I'm out bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day I gotta do what's best for my career because I'm too much of a competitor to be just out there.' Yet, while the 31-year-old, who is also in the midst of a bitter divorce from wife Keeta Vaccaro , has remained in South Florida as the Dolphins returned to training camp this week, it doesn't necessarily mean all is forgiven. 'When you say something like that you don't just come back with "My bad." You gotta work that relationship up. He is working on himself,' Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa told reporters Wednesday when asked about Hill's fiery comments. In addition to his cryptic Week 18 message, Hill courted further controversy during the offseason when he appeared to take a swipe at Tagovailoa himself. The receiver was asked by a fan on social media to rank the best quarterbacks in the league and he passed over his own signal caller, who missed parts of the 2024 season after suffering another concussion. Hill's picks were Ravens star Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen of the Bills, Chiefs icon Patrick Mahomes , Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield and Bengals signal caller Joe Burrow.
