WATCH: BBC presenter defies producer's pleas with bizarre bird imitation

Extra.ie08-07-2025
BBC presenter Maryam Moshiri defied her producer's pleas not to do a bizarre but funny imitation of a peacock on live television.
Maryam, who's one of the chief presenters on BBC News, was covering a story about a peacock that's been running rampant in the English village of Marlborough in Wiltshire, eating its way through vegetable patches and waking up neighbours with his early morning calls.
Covering the story on BBC News, the news package ended with the peacock, who's since been named Percy, cawing atop a chimney — before returning to the studio with Maryam, who said that her producers told her not to imitate the bird.
'I've been told specifically from my producer not to do an impression of a peacock,' Maryam said, before immediately saying 'I'm going to do it anyway.'
She when stuck her hands up and made, what we think, is a bird call, before immediately returning to newsreader mode and saying 'there we go.'
The clip was shared by TV critic Scott Bryan, with Maryam enjoying her latest clip to go viral – joking on Twitter (X) 'waiting for that call from BBC2, asking me to present my own birdwatching show…. Errrrr… still waiting…' BBC presenter Maryam Moshiri – Pic: BBC
This isn't the first time that Maryam has gone viral for moments that were intentional or otherwise; with her having to make an apology after flipping the middle finger at the camera back in 2023 while she thought she was off air.
The start of the BBC News program saw her raising her eyebrows and flashing the finger at who she thought were the producers behind the cameras, before going into newsreader mode and pulling the finger down.
Taking to Twitter at the time, she said: 'Hey everyone, yesterday just before the top of the hour I was joking around a bit with the team in the gallery.' Maryam previously made headlines for all the wrong reasons back in 2023, when she accidentally flashed the middle finger at the camera. Pic: Twitter
'I was pretending to count down as the director was counting me down from 10-0… including the fingers to show the number. So from 10 fingers held up to one.'
She explained that when it got to 1 she turned her finger as a joke, not realising it would be caught on camera.
'It was a private joke with the team and I'm so sorry it went out on air! It was not my intention for this to happen and I'm sorry if I offended or upset anyone,' she wrote.
Maryam explained that she wasn't 'flipping the bird' at viewers or 'even a person really.'
'It was a silly joke that was meant for a small number of my mates,' she concluded.

Ozzy Osbourne documentary pulled from BBC at family's request

'We are respecting the family's wishes to wait a bit longer before airing this very special film,' said the BBC. The documentary Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home, set to air on BBC One on Monday, was pulled from the schedule. Initially, there was no reason given; however, a BBC spokesperson later said that Osbourne's family has made the request. 'Our sympathies are with the Osbourne family at this difficult time. We are respecting the family's wishes to wait a bit longer before airing this very special film,' said the spokesperson. A new broadcast date is set to be confirmed shortly. 'This intimate film follows the final three years of Ozzy Osbourne's life as he and Sharon plan a return home after 25 years in L.A. and prepare for the ultimate farewell gig,' according to the documentary's synopsis. It details his move back to the U.K. and features interviews with Osbourne, his wife Sharon and children Jack and Kelly. Osbourne died on July 22 at the age of 76. His official cause of death was a heart attack. The news came shortly after the Black Sabbath frontman's final gig at Villa Park, in his hometown of Birmingham. Additionally, Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019 and suffered from spinal injuries. 'I've sat down to write this a hundred times and still don't know if the words will ever feel like enough,' said Kelly on Instagram after Osbourne's funeral. 'But from the bottom of my heart, thank you. The love, support, and beautiful messages I've received from so many of you have truly helped carry me through the hardest moment of my life. Every kind word, every shared memory, every bit of compassion has meant more than I can ever explain.' 'Grief is a strange thing. It sneaks up on you in waves. I will not be ok for a while, but knowing my family are not alone in our pain makes a difference. I'm holding on tight to the love, the light, and the legacy left behind,' she added.

Mark Goldbridge and Gary Neville's YouTube channels to show live Bundesliga fixtures

YouTuber Mark Goldbridge has been awarded part of the Bundesliga's live broadcasting rights in the United Kingdom, allowing him to show matches this season. This new agreement - the first time a major European football league has awarded its broadcasting rights to a content creator - will be in place for the Bundesliga's first round of fixtures this weekend, which kicks off on Friday night with defending champions Bayern Munich hosting RB Leipzig. That match — and all other Friday night games for the next two seasons — will be shown live on the BBC, on both the website and the iPlayer while Gary Neville's 'The Overlap' and Goldbridge's 'That's Football' channels will share those rights, showing 20 live Friday night games in 2025-26 in watch-along formats. All games will be free-to-air while the Bundesliga's own YouTube channel will be live broadcasting all Friday night games in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, the second tier of German football. The Overlap currently has over 1.5m subscribers, while Goldbridge's That's Football, boasts a further 1.39m subscribers. 'That's Football will stream 20 live Bundesliga matches on Friday nights as well as creating 34 weekly shows in 25/26 – the first creator channel with official league rights," Goldbridge's channel posted on Twitter. 'A landmark deal putting That's Football alongside Sky, BBC & Amazon in the Bundesliga UK strategy.' Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent di Cesare, posted: 'Thanks to the community for helping us build this. We keep moving.'
