'On this day, we are reminded not only of numbers, but of the lives and stories behind them—of the mothers, children, and families who form the heart of our nation,' said the First Lady. Pakistan continues to face critical challenges in maternal health, child welfare, and youth empowerment. In her message, the First Lady emphasized the urgent need for investment in family planning, education, social protection, and reproductive health services, the cornerstones of a strong and inclusive society.
'This is not merely a matter of development, it is a matter of dignity, equity, and justice. By prioritizing the well-being of our people, we secure the future of our nation,' she stated.
The theme for this year's World Population Day, empowering young people to shape the families they want in a fair and hopeful world, resonates deeply with Pakistan, where a majority of the population is under the age of 30. The First Lady underscored the importance of creating opportunities for young people to lead fulfilling lives, free from discrimination, and equipped with the tools to make informed choices.
'Our youth are not only our future, they are our present. We must ensure they have access to quality education, comprehensive healthcare, economic opportunities, and a voice in decisions that affect them,' said HE Aseefa Bhutto Zardari. 'Empowering them is essential to building a just, peaceful, and sustainable Pakistan.'
On this World Population Day, the First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of all Pakistanis and called on stakeholders across government, civil society, and the private sector to work in unity toward a future where every life is valued and every generation is empowered, reminding them of the words of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo,
'I dream of a Pakistan, of an Asia, of a world where every pregnancy is planned and every child conceived is nurtured, loved, educated, and supported.'

Call for global solidarity to protect journalists in peril
KARACHI: A round table with representatives of the media and blogosphere was held at the Russian House in Karachi. Representatives of the professional community gathered to discuss issues of life and safety of journalists working in conflict and military zones. The past 2024 turned out to be the deadliest year for journalists in history, according to a fresh report from the Committee to Protect Journalists. As a result of various attacks and conflicts around the world, at least 124 reporters and media workers were killed. Compared to the previous year, almost one and a half times more died - 84 journalists were killed in 2023. The event at the Russian House took place on a significant date - the anniversary of the death in Donbass of Russian photojournalist Andrei Stenin, who fell tragically on August 6, 2014 while on an editorial assignment. His name has become a symbol of courage and dedication to the profession. In his memory, a photo exhibition of his works was opened at the Russian House in Karachi, where vivid and poignant shots related to the conflict in Ukraine were presented, capturing the fates of ordinary people who found themselves at the epicentre of the tragedy. The roundtable participants emphasized the importance of international solidarity in protecting journalists, especially those working in life-threatening situations. They also discussed mechanisms of legal and diplomatic support, the role of civil society, and the need to cover the conflict from both sides while maintaining professional ethics and humanism. The event featured personal stories, an analysis of security practices, and proposals for strengthening cooperation between journalistic organizations in different countries. COAS credits Trump with 'preventing many wars'

Photo: INP Listen to article Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir praised US President Donald Trump on Sunday for his efforts to stop "many wars", including brokering a ceasefire between Pakistan and India in May. The army chief, who is on an official visit to the United States, held high-level engagements with senior American political and military leadership as well as the Pakistani diaspora, according to a statement issued here by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Speaking to the Pakistani Americans, the army chief said that Pakistan achieved notable successes on the diplomatic front, while praising President Trump's leadership for helping avert wars and creating opportunities for renewed bilateral engagement. The army chief described overseas Pakistanis as the country's strength, calling their role as a "brain gain" rather than a brain drain. He said the new generation's ideas, priorities, and global connections were a valuable national asset, with the potential to accelerate Pakistan's progress. He stressed that the nation's prosperity was closely tied to its global diaspora. He also said that an anticipated Pakistan-US trade deal would bring foreign investment to the country. Highlighting Pakistan's demographic advantage, the COAS noted that 64% of its population was under the age of 30. He urged expatriates to use their resources and influence to channel investment into the country, adding that national development was inseparable from global engagement. On security and regional issues, the army chief reiterated that Pakistan had no sympathy for terrorists and was committed to bringing them to justice. He expressed concern over India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) being involved in acts of terrorism, warning that such activities were a matter of grave concern. He vowed a swift and forceful response to any Indian aggression. Reaffirming Pakistan's stance on Jammu and Kashmir, the army chief said that it was not an internal matter of India but an internationally recognised dispute, echoing Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's description of it as Pakistan's "jugular vein". Earlier, the army chief attended the retirement ceremony of US Central Command (Centcom) chief General Michael E Kurilla in Tampa, and the change of command ceremony for Admiral Brad Cooper, who has taken over the role. The COAS praised the outgoing commander's role in strengthening bilateral military cooperation and expressed confidence in continued collaboration under the new leadership. He also met Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, discussing matters of mutual professional interest and inviting him to visit Pakistan. On the sidelines, the army chief interacted with defence chiefs from other friendly countries. While addressing members of the Pakistani diaspora, the COAS urged them to remain optimistic about Pakistan's future and contribute towards attracting investment to the country. The expatriates, in turn, pledged to support Pakistan's progress. The visit comes just two months after the army chief's high-profile trip to Washington, where he met US President Donald Trump and senior administration officials. That visit, viewed as a significant step in recalibrating Islamabad-Washington ties, took place against the backdrop of a cooling in US-India relations. Observers say the renewed military-to-military contacts could pave the way for broader cooperation, particularly in regional security and counterterrorism efforts. According to sources, security cooperation between Pakistan and the US has never been so strong as it is right now. Unlike the previous Biden administration, the current US dispensation has more open approach towards Pakistan. There has been growing realisation in the Trump Administration that Pakistan, contrary to the perception, has shown great willingness to work with Washington. On the other hand, the view about India in Washington has changed quite dramatically as many US officials view their Indian counterparts arrogant and less receptive to issues of concerns.

Dar, FM Türkiye review bilateral cooperation
ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Sunday spoke with Foreign Minister of Türkiye, Hakan Fidan late last night. The two leaders reviewed Pak–Türkiye bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on current regional and international developments. They also expressed grave concerns at the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The DPM/FM condemned the Israeli plan for a complete military takeover, calling it a flagrant violation of international law and UNSC resolutions.
