The BBC is readying to launch a brand new drama that is likely to pull at your heartstrings, given the nature and difficult subject matter at the centre of the harrowing story plot.
Unforgivable, is a powerful new drama penned by the legendary Cracker and Time screenwriter Jimmy McGovern and stars Line of Duty actress Anna Maxwell Martin, Emmy-winner Anna Friel and A dolescence child star Austin Haynes. The drama is set to arrive on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Thursday 24 July, with episodes kicking off on BBC Two, from 9pm that same evening.
What is Unforgivable about?
Set in Liverpool, the production follows the lives of the Mitchell family who have been dealing with the aftermath of grooming and sexual abuse. After serving a two-year jail sentence, Bobby Schofield, the person who committed the disturbing crimes, is released from prison.
Bobby is ordered to carry out a residential rehabilitation programme upon his release, to understand through therapy what may have led him to conduct such an awful crime.
The series aims to understand all viewpoints and how abuse can impact every single person within a family setting.
"Unforgivable examines the extensive ripple effect of abuse from multiple perspectives and how those involved can try to move forwards in the midst of the devastation," explained the BBC.
Its synopsis reads: "Having served his prison sentence, Joe (Bobby Schofield) arrives at St Maura's, an institution which offers him a home and rehabilitation after his release. With the support of Katherine (Anna Maxwell Martin), an ex-nun, Joe undertakes therapy sessions in the hope of understanding what led him to commit the abuse."
The overview further states: "Simultaneously, his sister, Anna (Anna Friel), is dealing with the enormous impact that Joe's crime has had on her family - her sons, Tom (Austin Haynes) and Peter (Finn McParland), and her father, Brian (David Threlfall)."
Who is in the cast of Unforgivable?
Line of Duty star Anna, plays the role of Katherine, a former nun who is working at the rehabilitation institution as a therapist and supporting Joe.
Anna Friel, of Brookside fame and best known for her role as Beth Jordache on the soap, plays Joe's sister Anna, who is desperately trying to move on with her life while fiercely guarding her two sons.
David Threlfall stars as Anna's angry father, who is furious that she has instigated contact with her brother Joe.
Other members of the star-studded cast include Adolescence actor Austin Haynes, Fin McParland, Mark Womack, Paddy Rowan and Phina Oruche.
With a stellar cast and compelling script, Unforgivable is certainly not going to be a BBC drama you'd want to miss.

It's true that viewing habits have changed, with fewer people watching TV as it airs and more opting for the flexibility of on-demand viewing. At the peak of Mrs Brown's Boys' popularity — their third season in 2012 — it brought in over 9million viewers every episode. That year saw 10.72million people tune in for the Christmas Eve episode, with a whopping 11.69million returning the next day for the second part. After four years, this festive figure had dropped slightly to 8.98million but remained steady with the show voted as the best British sitcom of the 21st century. In response to this, O'Carroll said: 'It vindicates the fans' belief in the show. They have kept us on the air – it certainly wasn't the reviewers. 'There is an audience out there that comedy forgot – that Are You Being Served? audience has been left behind. Us winning this award proves that.' Mrs Brown's Boys has never received good reviews, but the show is struggling to compete a decade on, despite once being voted as better than The Office or Gavin and Stacey. Last year's Christmas episode pulled in a measly 2.2million viewers, while Gavin and Stacey's return yielded 10million more viewers. Behind the scenes, there has been controversy too, as rehearsals for the festive episode were halted temporarily after O'Carroll 'implied' a racial slur. Stacey and her partner Kevin Clifton, who met and fell in love after lifting Strictly Come Dancing's Glitterball Trophy together in 2018, were due to appear on Zoe Ball's BBC Radio 2 show in the afternoon to discuss their UK-wide tour of the West End hit. However, the day didn't get off to the best start, with Zoe explaining to listeners that her guests had been through "a dramatic morning", leading to "lots of people running around" behind-the-scenes trying to rectify the situation before they went on air. She recalled: "We've had a couple of meltdowns at about 8 o'clock this morning, which was really fun, and then we didn't want to shower, 'I don't want a morning shower', and I said, 'you've got ravioli around your face baby, they'll take me off you!'" The drama didn't stop there, as when Stacey, Kevin, and Minnie arrived at Broadcasting House, the BBC presenter "got stuck" while trying to make her way up to Zoe's radio studio. Sharing his version of events, professional dancer Kevin said: "They were all looking for Stacey's phone, because she lost her phone downstairs, and, as we know, Stace will not get in a lift and we're, like, on the top floor of the building here. "So they had to find some secret passage to get Stacey up the stairs, it's been a real journey to get here." BBC investigates alleged cocaine use by two Strictly Come Dancing stars
The BBC has launched an investigation into alleged cocaine use by two stars of Strictly Come Dancing. The Sun on Sunday reported that the two stars' alleged drug use was 'talked about widely among the cast' of the BBC One primetime show. The newspaper also claimed that others had reported allegations of drug taking on the show to the BBC. The cast members involved in the investigation were not named by the newspaper. According to the Sun on Sunday, the allegations were made in a legal submission by the law firm Russells in March on behalf of a former contestant, the Welsh opera singer Wynne Evans. A BBC spokesperson said: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.' The newspaper said the BBC had appointed a law firm to lead the investigation. It is understood that the corporation often appoints external law firms to help lead investigations and report back to an internal team. Evans, who was a celebrity dancer in last year's series, was dropped by the BBC for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly tour. He apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable' after the Mail on Sunday reported that he was heard making a remark to a woman in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event. The singer announced in May that he was leaving his BBC Radio Wales show after the BBC decided not to renew his contract. This latest investigation comes after the BBC launched a review into Strictly in 2024 that looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against the former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, made by his former dance partner Amanda Abbington. The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made. In June last year, the BBC confirmed Pernice's departure from the show. Another Strictly professional dancer, Graziano Di Prima, also left the show last year after allegations about his conduct with a past participant of the show. The BBC announced a series of new measures in July 2024 aimed at improving welfare on the show. These include the introduction of chaperones who are present at all times during training room rehearsals, two new welfare producers, and providing additional training for the professional dancers, production team and crew. In June, the EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick was suspended by the BBC after a video emerged of the actor using an ableist slur during Strictly rehearsals in November. Borthwick apologised and a BBC spokesperson said at the time: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. We have robust processes in place for this.'
