Lili Reinhart To Topline Rom-Com ‘The Love Hypothesis' For Amazon MGM Studios & MRC
In the romantic comedy, Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate, and Dr. Adam Carlsen, a hotshot professor and well-known tyrant, enter into a fake relationship, seeing each of their carefully calculated theories on love get thrown into chaos.

Published in 2021, an imprint of Penguin Random House, Hazelwood's novel spent 10 months on the New York Times bestseller list, breaking out internationally in 40 countries. Originally acquired for publication by editor Sarah Blumenstock at Berkley, the book was also named the Best Romance of the Year by Amazon. Hazelwood is also known for titles like Problematic Summer Romance, Deep End, and Bride, among others.
Claire Scanlon (Set It Up) is directing The Love Hypothesis from a script by Sarah Rothschild (The Sleepover). Elizabeth Cantillon (The Girl in the Spider's Web, Charlie's Angels) is producing, with Reinhart, Catherine Hagedorn, and Hazelwood executive producing.
In a statement accompanying the project announcement, author Hazelwood said, 'Honestly, I still can't believe this is happening? Elizabeth Cantillon, Claire Scanlon, and Lili Reinhart have all created, produced, or starred in works that I'm absolutely feral about, and I am beyond honored that they're choosing to bring their talent to this project. Books and films are very different media, and I have complete trust in this brilliant team. I cannot wait to see the final product they'll come up with. I hope they have as much fun filming as I had while writing the book.'
Soon to be seen starring opposite Raiff and Mark Ruffalo in the former's indie TV series Hal & Harper, a project she produced which was acquired by MUBI following its premiere at Sundance, Reinhart's upcoming slate also includes Uta Briesewitz's American Sweatshop, which premiered at SXSW this year. She recently wrapped on Brian Swibel's directorial debut, The Very Best People, as well as Meredith Alloway's first feature, Forbidden Fruits, which IFC Films will release in 2026. She's also attached to produce and star in Ali & Anthony Garland's Fake Wedding, which is in development at Amazon MGM under her production company, Small Victory, and is represented by Anonymous Content, UTA, and Peikoff Mahan.
Reuniting with Amazon MGM here after directing The People We Hate at the Wedding, starring Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, and Ben Platt, Scanlon is also known for helming the Netflix rom-com Set It Up, starring Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell. Most recently, she directed episodes of Loot and Palm Royale for Apple TV+, Abbot Elementary for ABC, and produced and directed Season 2 of Unstable for Netflix. She is repped by UTA, 3 Arts, and Jared Levine.
Rothschild wrote The Sleepover, which was sold in a bidding war to Netflix, and stars Malin Akerman, Ken Marino, and Joe Manganiello. The film was directed by Trish Sie and earned her a WGA Award. After recently turning in her draft of Splash at Disney, she is currently writing projects for Paramount and Walden Media. She is represented by Verve, Entertainment 360, and attorney Kim Stenton at Myman Greenspan.
Hazelwood is repped by the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency and UTA.

Luca Guadagnino's 'After the Hunt' to open New York Film Festival
NEW YORK -- NEW YORK (AP) — Luca Guadagnino's 'After the Hunt' will open the 63rd New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced Wednesday. 'After the Hunt' will first premiere at the Venice Film Festival, but on Sept. 26, it will kick off the New York Film Festival. An Amazon MGM Studios release due out this fall, it stars Julia Roberts as a Yale philosophy professor whose comfortable life is tested after her protege (Ayo Edebiri) accuses the professor's longtime colleague (Andrew Garfield) of sexual assault. Dennis Lim, artistic director of the festival, said Guadagnino's film 'confirms his status as one of the most versatile risk-takers working today.' 'Brilliantly acted and crafted, 'After the Hunt' is something rare in contemporary cinema: a complex, grown-up movie with a lot on its mind that also happens to be a deeply satisfying piece of entertainment,' Lim said in a statement. Guadagnino will return to the festival that last year hosted his William S. Burroughs adaptation 'Queer,' and that also selected his 2017 film 'Call Me by Your Name.' 'I have always found the New York Film Festival to be an arbiter of global cinema,' said Guadagnino. 'For over 60 years it has been a festival that makes audiences open their minds and hearts to the most daring and compelling global cinema from both established and emerging filmmakers.' The New York Film Festival runs Sept. 26 through Oct. 13.

Ryan Gosling and faceless alien named Rocky wow crowd at 'Project Hail Mary' Comic-Con panel
SAN DIEGO -- SAN DIEGO (AP) — Comic-Con got a lot of Ryan and a little bit of Rocky at a panel on 'Project: Hail Mary,' the forthcoming film that's equal parts space adventure, real-science deep-dive, broad comedy and relationship drama. 'What's up Hall H!' a giddy Ryan Gosling in a trucker hat and flannel shirt shouted to the crowd of more than 6,000 at Comic-Con's biggest venue. Amazon MGM Studios showed the opening five minutes and several other slightly unfinished scenes from the first third of the film, seven months before its planned release. (Spoilers for that section follow). It included an extended glimpse at Rocky, the stone-shaped and faceless alien who becomes Gosling's mission partner as they attempt to save the universe from ecological disaster. Phil Lord, who codirected the film with Chris Miller, said the relationship between the two beings stuck alone together in space represents the central theme. 'If the universe depended on it,' Miller said, 'can adult men make friends?' Rocky is already a cult favorite for readers of Andy Weir's novel, and is sure to be a future staple of Comic-Con cosplay. Asked where Rocky might rank among his great screen relationships, Gosling declined to answer, saying it's too soon to know. Weir, who was part of the panel, chimed in: 'From Emma Stone, to person of stone.' The film is adapted by screenwriter Drew Goddard, who also wrote the script for the 2015 Matt Damon movie 'The Martian,' based on Weir's first novel. Gosling said he got on board the ship immediately after reading 'Project Hail Mary' in manuscript form, and was only partly kidding when he called Weir, who was sitting next to him, 'the greatest sci-fi mind of our time.' 'I knew it would be brilliant, because it's Andy, but nothing could prepare me,' Gosling said. 'It took me places I'd never been, it showed me things I'd never seen, it was as heartbreaking as it was funny.' Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher and underachiever drafted for the mission. 'I connect to his reluctance," Gosling said. 'Aside from he fact that he has a doctorate in molecular biology he's quite an ordinary person. He reacts to a lot of things that I might or a lot of us might. He's terrified — appropriately — of the task at hand.' The opening five minutes show a gloppy, long-bearded, amnesiac Gosling as he awakes in a pod. He climbs out, confused. He finds other people in pods who are clearly dead. Then he finds a window and learns he's in space. He gives a mealymouthed scream of 'Where am ?!' When the lights came up in the room, Gosling said that he'd looked in the scene like a 'space caveman' in a 'placenta onesie.' The movie represents the return to directing, and return to space, of Lord and Miller for the first time since they were fired and replaced by Ron Howard by Disney and Lucasfilm from 2018's 'Solo.' Like, 'The Martian,' the movie goes heavy on the science — Weir, also a producer, said he spent hours going over every equation one very white board. But it takes the messy, kitchen-sink, everything-is-comedy approach Lord and Miller used in films like 'The Lego Movie.' 'This movie is not a Mac, it's a PC,' Lord said. 'It can be beautiful, it just can't be pretty."
