Willie Mullins set to gatecrash Royal Ascot with ‘exciting' Gold Cup horse bought for £100,000
WILLIE MULLINS has set his sights on gatecrashing Royal Ascot - with an 'exciting' £100,000 horse who won on debut.
Sober will see Champagne corks popping in the winner's enclosure if he can get close in next month's Gold Cup.

Sober got the job done on his debut over hurdles for Willie Mullins - but it looks like big Flat races will be his target in the future

A two-time Group 2 winner in France,
Never one to rush his top talent, Mullins kept Sober, who also finished third in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak in 2022, to the Closutton gallops through the winter.
But the six-year-old son of Camelot was finally unleashed in a seemingly run-of-the-mill 2m4f novice hurdle at Killarney on Monday.
Initially available at 5-6, Sober was backed off the boards to win at 4-11 under Mullins' No1 rider Paul Townend.

Although jumping didn't really look his game - he won £275,000 racing on the Flat in France - Sober, who punters labelled an 'exciting' prospect, warmed to his task nicely in the end.
And after the last he always had the 120-rated runner-up Arch Empire, trained by Gordon Elliott and giving Sober 6lbs, held.
Bookies weren't that impressed by the manner of victory, keeping him as big as 33-1 for the Ascot feature.
And he will have to improve absolutely bundles to see off the likes of Aidan O'Brien's defending champion Kyprios.

And he could be following the same path to greatness as another of his stable stars.
Ebor and County Hurdle king Absurde won the very same Killarney race two years ago.
He then went to Ascot and finished second to Vauban in the Copper Horse Handicap before

An awesome dual-purpose performer, he has picked up mega cash finishing seventh and fifth in the Melbourne Cup and recently added a Sussex Champion Hurdle to his CV.
The paralells don't end there.
Both Absurde and Sober were bred by racing's richest owners, the multi-billionaire brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer.
Bosses of luxury fashion brand Chanel, they have an estimated combined wealth of £50billion and have bred several Group 1 winners, including 2012 Arc winner Solemia and Breeders' Cup legend Goldikova.

Townend was impressed after the debut showing - and hinted his future lies on the Flat.
He said: "Sober has got loads of ability and hopefully hurdling will just sharpen him up.
"I was losing a length at a lot of hurdles and he hangs a bit.
"He will jump well in time and I'd say it was a good performance to win."

NICK KYRGIOS has been axed from the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon for 2025, according to reports. It comes after his appointment to the broadcaster's team for the event last year sparked uproar. And according to The Telegraph, the outspoken star will not be part of the BBC's coverage of the Grand Slam tournament this year. The 30-year-old had been hoping to play in the tournament for the first time since losing the 2022 final to Novak Djokovic. However, the tennis bad boy confirmed he would not be appearing because of a recurring injury. Advertisement Taking to Instagram, he said: "Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – l've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year. "I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. Kyrgios has worked with ESPN for the last two years during the first slam of the year, the Australian Open. Caroline Nokes, the women and equalities committee chair, blasted that the broadcaster should "hang its head in shame" for the decision. Premier League legend backs Irish star to continue record-breaking haul at Royal Ascot
Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of the flat-racing season, with some of the world's best jockeys and trainers arriving in Berkshire for five days of top-notch horse-racing action. This year's event begins on Tuesday 17 June, with talent from Europe, Australia, Japan, the Middle East, and the United States all competing for a slice of the huge £10 million prize pot. And former Arsenal star and horse racing fanatic Ray Parlour believes Irishman Aidan O'Brien will extend his remarkable win rate at the famous meeting later this month. The Ballydoyle star is already the most successful trainer in Royal Ascot history with a record 91 winners. He scooped six wins at Royal Ascot last year, making him the leading trainer at the event - the 13th time he has achieved the feat in his career. 'Aidan O'Brien is the best flat trainer at the moment,' says Parlour. 'He has so many top horses in his stable who can win the sprints and longer distance races, so naturally, he's one to follow.' The ex-Gunner says he'll be focusing on Thursday's showpiece Gold Cup, where O'Brien will be looking to add to his record-breaking eight wins in the race. His horse Illinois is 7/5 favourite with NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland to triumph ahead of Candelari at 7/2 and Trawlerman at 21/5. Another O'Brien starter in the race is Jan Brueghel, priced at 26/5. 'Illinois is a good horse who may make it a very interesting race and could come out on top in the Gold Cup,' adds Parlour. The two highest-earning races are the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, with a whopping £1 million handed to the winner of each race. In the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, Lazzat is the 7/2 frontrunner, Inisherin at 24/5 and O'Brien's Storm Boy at 6/1. Ascot's opening race is also highly rewarding, with the winner taking home £750,000. With John and Thady Gosden as the trainers, Parlour plans to keep a close watch on Lead Artist, expecting Oisin Murphy to ride again. Just last month, Murphy guided Lead Artist to a thrilling victory at Newbury, where he narrowly defeated Dancing Gemini in the closing moments of the race. Now, the two horses are set for a rematch at Ascot, and Parlour is confident Murphy will replicate that winning performance in Berkshire. 'In the opening race at Ascot, Lead Artist is a horse I know won at Newbury and could go very well in the Queen Anne Stakes,' he says. Lead Artist is 26/5 with NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland to win the race, just behind Dancing Gemini at 9/2 and the favourite Rosallion at 7/2. Four-time FA Cup winner Parlour is also tipping jockey Ryan Moore for more success at this year's event. The 41-year-old has won the leading jockey title 10 times at Ascot and set a post-war record of nine winners for a single Royal Ascot meeting in 2015. 'Ryan Moore is such a great jockey, too, and he proves time and time again the quality he has in the saddle,' he said. As well as NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland offering great odds on all UK and international horse racing events, NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland has welcome offers and promotions, including up to 500 free spins for new customers (full T&Cs can be found here). 'Royal Ascot is a superb spectacle and an icon of British Sport,' says Parlour. 'It gets the Royal treatment as well, so it's 100 per cent up there for sure as one of the year's best events. 'Sometimes you receive a tip and follow that one, or look at the in-form trainers and jockeys. For me, especially in the big races, I may just go with horse number 15, which was my number when I played.'
